1 INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAM COMMUNITY AND SERVICE How do we live in relation to others? How can I contribute to the community? How can I help others? Community and service starts in the classroom and extends beyond it, requiring students to take an active part in the communities in which they live. Giving importance to the sense of community throughout the program encourages responsible citizenship as it seeks to deepen the adolescent's knowledge and understanding of the world around them. The emphasis is on developing community awareness and concern, and the skills needed to make an effective contribution to society. Students are encouraged to make connections between their intellectual and social growth, thereby refining their affective, creative and ethical as well as cognitive development. This is achieved through a process of discovery of self and community, and reflections inside as well as outside the classroom.
2 The IB Mission Statement The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international organizations to develop challenging programs of international education and rigorous assessment. These programs encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right. IB Learner Profile Traits Inquirers: They develop their natural curiosity. They acquire the skills necessary to conduct inquiry and research and show independence in learning. They actively enjoy learning and this love of learning will be sustained throughout their lives. Knowledgeable: They explore concepts, ideas and issues that have local and global significance. In so doing, they acquire in-depth knowledge and develop understanding across a broad and balanced range of disciplines. Thinkers: They exercise initiative in applying thinking skills critically and creatively to recognize and approach complex problems, and make reasoned, ethical decisions. Communicators: They understand and express ideas and information confidently and creatively in more than one language and in a variety of modes of communication. They work effectively and willingly in collaboration with others. Principled: They act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness, justice and respect for the dignity of the individual, groups and communities. They take responsibility for their own actions and the consequences that accompany them. Open-minded: They understand and appreciate their own cultures and personal histories, and are open to the perspectives, values and traditions of other individuals and communities. They are accustomed to seeking and evaluating a range of points of view, and are willing to grow from the experience. Caring: They show empathy, compassion and respect towards the needs and feelings of others. They have a personal commitment to service, and act to make a positive difference to the lives of others and to the environment. Risk-takers: They approach unfamiliar situations and uncertainty with courage and forethought, and have the independence of spirit to explore new roles, ideas and strategies. They are brave and articulate in defending their beliefs. Balanced: They understand the importance of intellectual, physical and emotional balance to achieve personal well-being for themselves and others. Reflective: They give thoughtful consideration to their own learning and experience. They are able to assess and understand their strengths and limitations in order to support their learning and personal development.
3 General Information 1. All MYP students are required to complete a minimum of 50 hours per year, maintain documentation of hours through ManageBac, complete reflections, collect evidence, and create a brief presentation. If a student is having issues with using ManageBac they should see their core teacher or Mrs. Susewind for assistance 2. Each student will complete 25 action hours and 25 service hours. Action Hours: Practicing or enhancing a skill or talent that is not part of the school s academic requirements or instructional day (i.e. sports, class, private lessons, performances, running an experiment, writing, creating art, leadership activities, extracurricular activities such as debate, drama, or, forensics). Service Hours: Addressing a community need and performed for a group or individual without reward, personal benefit, or payment to the volunteer. Assisting non-profit organizations may be used for service hours. Family responsibilities and/or obligations and assisting for-profit businesses may NOT be used for community and service hours. 3. If an activity is in question on whether it meets the criteria for action or service ask a core teacher or Mrs. Susewind for clarification, before completing the hours. Once students have entered a description of their activity into ManageBac, their teacher advisor will approve the hours or discuss concerns with the student. 4. Learner Profile Trait: COMMUNICATORS MYP students understand and express ideas and information confidently and creatively in more than one language and in a variety of modes of communication. They work effectively and willingly in collaboration with others. Students should research and contact organizations on their own. Make sure to introduce yourself, letting them know you are from Plaza Middle School MYP and about the community and service hours you are looking to fulfill. Service opportunities will also be sent home, throughout the school year, to parents and students on Edmodo or Google Classroom. Depending on the age of the child, adult supervision may be required. ***Remember to get your sponsor s address in order to put it into ManageBac for verification. 5. Students will be sharing their experiences/reflections each semester with teachers and peers. This is a great way to learn about new opportunities. Please Mrs. Susewind about any events you are aware of to share with all students (brief description of event, help needed, date, location, contact information). 6. Students may begin completing hours for the upcoming school year the day after the previous school year officially ends. 7. Students are expected to log all hours through ManageBac. An address for the supervisor of the activity is needed in order for the supervisor to verify the number of hours completed. Keep in mind that the supervisor will not be ed until the student has completed all required parts, including reflections. (Parents should not verify hours unless they are the direct supervisor of the activity) 8. Students will not receive credit for their hours until their supervisor has verified them through ManageBac. If a supervisor does not have an or if a student is unable to get the supervisor to respond via , there is a form in ManageBac that can be printed that the student can have signed by the supervisor and then upload it into ManageBac. 9. All students are required to create and give an individual presentation, at the end of the school year, on both action and service hours. Their audience will be peers and teachers. Presentation due date: May 5, The individual presentation must be no longer than five minutes in length and must include a visual component. The five minutes can be an oral presentation explaining the visual component or the five minutes can be incorporated into the visual component. Presentations must include all of the following: Overview of action hours to include key components from reflections completed throughout the year Overview of service hours to include key components from reflections completed throughout the year Visual component for presentation (see below)
4 The visual component can be through a medium the student feels will best represent their action and service hours (i.e. display board, video, piece of art, scrapbook, collage, PowerPoint, Prezi, Imovie, commercial, etc.). If the student has another idea of how to visually create the presentation please see a core teacher or Mrs. Susewind for approval, prior to starting the creation of the presentation. The student should gather brochures, take pictures, journal entries, observations, interviews, etc., throughout the year, to use as pieces of the visual component/presentation (keep these in your binder). 10. At the end of the year, students will participate in the Plaza Community Service Fair to showcase their community service work. MYP students should, through their engagement with service as action: Become more aware of their own strengths and areas for growth Undertake challenges that develop new skills Discuss, evaluate and plan student-initiated activities Persevere in action Work collaboratively with others Develop international-mindedness through global engagement, multilingualism and intercultural understanding Consider the ethical implications of their actions DON T PROCRASTINATE! Make sure you are completing logs, reflections, collecting evidence, and creating your individual presentation throughout the school year. Community and Service Levels of Involvement Rubric: How involved will you be? Virginia Beach City Public Schools Strategic Plan specifically correlates to the development of the 21 st century skill of Social Responsibility: Students will understand the importance of acting with integrity, empathy, and compassion and commit to making a meaningful contribution to the local, national, and/or global community by offering time, talents, advocacy, and/or resources to a worthy cause. Service Awards Students who consistently demonstrate the traits of the learner profile and willingly engage in service activities that result in a commitment of time beyond the minimum expectation (50 hours) and at the Proficient/Advanced levels can be nominated for an end-of-year service award. These students will be recognized at the end of the year award ceremonies. **Action and service hours are a requirement of the MYP. Students should ensure they have completed all hours by the final due date. Failure to complete action and service hours, logs, reflections, and final presentation, prior to due dates, will result in a student being placed on an action plan. If students are placed on an action plan due to incomplete action and service hours they will be given the opportunity to complete their hours over the summer. Students must provide appropriate documentation of completion of hours. Any student who has not completed the hours by July 20, 2017 may be removed from the MYP.
