Abstract IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system with its integrated IBM Tivoli Storage Manager client solution enables enterprises to back up and restore data in a minimum time period. It increases efficiency, performance, and reliability of the backup and restore operations. Taking a full backup every time ensures reliability of backups. However, not all the data changes every time a new backup is invoked and the time required for a full backup increases the backup window. In order to reduce duplication of backed up data, you need to back up only those files and objects that have been changed or created since last backup. This identification can be done with a full file system traversal using standard system calls but the time increases linearly with the number of objects in the file system. IBM General Parallel File System (IBM GPFS) policy engine embedded in the Storwize V7000 Unified system file modules scan the i-node table of a file system, which is much faster than the conventional system calls, reducing the overall time required for the backup. Storwize V7000 Unified system also leverages both the file modules in the backup process to further reduce the time needed for backups. This paper provides guidelines for planning, setup, configuration, and use cases for taking advantage of the Storwize V7000 Unified system file modules integrated Tivoli Storage Manager backup capability. Executive overview IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system file modules are fully integrated with IBM Tivoli Storage Manager. Prerequisites This technical paper assumes familiarity with the following prerequisites: Basic knowledge of the IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system Basic knowledge Tivoli Storage Manager The IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system must have Storwize V7000 file module software version 1.3 GA or higher. IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system: Overview Figure 1 : IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system The IBM Storwize Unified system is a virtualized storage system to complement virtualized server environments that provides unmatched performance, availability, advanced functions and highly-scalable 2

capacity never seen before in midrange disk systems. This powerful midrange disk system has been designed to be easy to use and enable rapid deployment without additional resources. The Storwize V7000 Unified system consolidates block and file workloads into a single storage system for simplicity of management and reduced cost, and offers greater efficiency and flexibility through built-in solid state drive (SSD) optimization and thin-provisioning technologies. The advanced functions of this storage system also enable nondisruptive migration of data from existing storage, simplifying implementation and minimizing impact to users. The Storwize V7000 Unified system enables virtualization and reuse of existing disk systems, supporting a greater potential return on investment (ROI). The system includes IBM Active Cloud Engine, which is designed to deliver policy-based management of files to reduce costs through use of tiered storage and improve data governance. The IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system includes the IBM Storwize V7000 file module, and the IBM Storwize V7000 storage system is designed to support both file as well as block protocols. Figure 1 shows a pictorial representation of the IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system. The file module is a clustered system comprised of two units that provide file systems for use by network-attached storage (NAS). The file module uses the Storwize V7000 storage system to provide the file module with volumes. Volumes are also provided on the storage area networks (SAN). The Storwize V7000 storage system consists of a drive enclosure called the control enclosure. Both regular and SSDs are supported. The control enclosure contains disk drives and two node canisters that are managed as a single-clustered system. Expansion enclosures contain drives and are attached to the control enclosure. Expansion canisters include the serial-attached SCSI (SAS) interface hardware that enables the node hardware to use the drives of the expansion enclosures. The IBM Storwize V7000 File Module software within the Storwize V7000 Unified system contains the interface node, storage node, and management node functions. A management node is used for configuring, administering, and monitoring a system. An interface node connects a system to an Internet Protocol (IP) network using the following protocols. Common Internet File System (CIFS) Network File System (NFS) File Transfer Protocol (FTP) Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure (HTTPS) Secure Copy Protocol (SCP) The Storwize V7000 Unified system also supports following block functions for the host systems that attach to the Storwize V7000 Unified system. Creates a single pool of storage Provides logical unit virtualization Manages logical volumes Mirrors logical volumes Provides large cache Supports Copy Services IBM Tivoli Storage FlashCopy Manager (point-in-time copy) function, including thinprovisioned FlashCopy to make multiple targets affordable Metro Mirror (synchronous copy) 3

Global Mirror (asynchronous copy) Data migration Allows Space management IBM System Storage Easy Tier to migrate the most frequently used data to higher performing storage Metering of service quality when combined with IBM Tivoli Storage Productivity Center Thin-provisioned logical volumes The Storwize V7000 Unified system provides an ability to manage block and file storage through a single management graphical user interface (GUI) or command line interface (CLI). 4

\ IBM Tivoli Storage Manager overview IBM Tivoli Storage Manager is a client/server program that provides centralized, automated data protection, and storage management solutions to customers in a multivendor computer environment. Tivoli Storage Manager provides a policy-managed backup, archive, and space-management facility for file servers, workstations, applications, and application servers. Tivoli Storage Manager includes following components: Server Server program Administrative interface Server database and recovery logs Server storage Client nodes Backup-archive clients Network-attached storage file server Application client Application program interface (API) Tivoli Storage Manager for space management Storage agents Network clients use Tivoli Storage Manager to store data for any of the following purposes: Backup and restore Archive and retrieve Instant archive and rapid recovery Migrations and recall Through Tivoli Storage Manager server, you can manage the devices and media used to store client data. The server integrates the management of storage with the policies you define for managing client data. 5

Integration of IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system file modules with Tivoli Storage Manager The Storwize V7000 Unified system is designed for file as well as block storage provisioning with the capacity to store large amount of file data on the file modules. Obviously, working with large amount of data and large number of files takes longer duration and this leads to longer duration of backup in today's industry, where there is a demand to reduce backup duration. To meet this requirement, the backup facility in the Storwize V7000 Unified system file modules has been optimized by providing a fully-integrated Tivoli Storage Manager client within file modules. Benefits of integrated Tivoli Storage Manager solution over conventional backup methods Figure 2: Integrated Tivoli Storage Manager solution with Storwize V7000 Unified system 6

In conventional backup method, the backup software can back up data from the shares exported from Storwize V7000 Unified system file modules mounted on the NFS or CIFS clients. Backup software is installed on each NFS or CIFS client and data is backed up over the network to the backup server. Integrated Tivoli Storage Manager solution with Storwize V7000 Unified system file modules provides the following advantages: Tivoli Storage Manager client is preinstalled on the file modules of the Storwize V7000 Unified system and data is directly backed up from file modules to the backup server, as shown in Figure 2. Storwize V7000 Unified system file modules have an integrated IBM General Parallel File System (IBM GPFS ) policy scan engine to scan the i-node table of a file system, which is much faster than the conventional system calls, reducing the overall time required for the backup. Storwize V7000 Unified system leverages both its file modules for backing up the data to improve performance and distribute load across both the file modules. Storwize V7000 Unified system file modules can establish several sessions with Tivoli Storage Manager server. Existing Tivoli Storage Manager server environment can be leveraged to back up Storwize V7000 Unified system. Multiple Tivoli Storage Manager servers can be configured to back up different GPFS file system to spread backup workload across multiple backup servers. Integrated Tivoli Storage Manager backup solution features With Integrated Tivoli Storage Manager solution, administrators of Storwize V7000 Unified system can: Set up, configure, and monitor backups or restores through a unified and simplified GUI, CLI, or Storwize V7000 Unified system. Perform scheduled or manual backup of a GPFS file system using the Storwize V7000 Unified system GUI or CLI. Perform restores of several single file system objects, objects according to the file patterns, entire directory tree, directories, and all subdirectories or an entire file system from the Tivoli Storage Manager server. Query the previous or active backup sessions. Monitor the backups or restore sessions through the Storwize V7000 Unified system GUI or CLI. Planning for IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system backups with Tivoli Storage Manager Planning is one of the most important areas for consideration before beginning to use Tivoli Storage Manager for the Storwize V7000 Unified system backup. It is important that the backup administrator and the Storwize V7000 Unified system administrator work together to anticipate the circumstances in which recovery of data from the Storwize V7000 Unified system is required, as well as to anticipate the amount of data needed to be backed up to the Tivoli Storage Manager server. 7

Initial requirements of Tivoli Storage Manager for Storwize V7000 Unified system The following are the initial requirements of Tivoli Storage Manager for the Storwize V7000 Unified system. Tivoli Storage Manager server is installed and licensed in the customer network, outside the Storwize V7000 Unified system. Refer to Tivoli Storage Manager Info Center for more information on the installation and supported platforms for Tivoli Storage Manager server. This section also assumes that the customer has an appropriate (disk or tape) storage available and knows how to define it to the Tivoli Storage Manager server that has existing storage pools to store the Storwize V7000 Unified system backups. Each backup node needs to be licensed on the Tivoli Storage Manager server. Time synchronize the Tivoli Storage Manager server with the Storwize V7000 Unified system. Otherwise, configuring and running the backup or restore jobs on the Storwize V7000 Unified system might fail. Multiple Tivoli Storage Manager servers can back up the Storwize V7000 Unified system. Verify that all the Tivoli Storage Manager servers are connected to the network and are reachable from the file modules of Storwize V7000 Unified system. It is possible to have one Tivoli Storage Manager server configured per GPFS file system but it is not possible to have multiple Tivoli Storage Manager servers backing up the same GPFS file system. Verify that the Tivoli Storage Manager servers are compatible with the Tivoli Storage Manager client version on the Storwize V7000 Unified system. Tivoli Storage Manager server configuration for Storwize V7000 Unified system Before configuring the Storwize V7000 Unified system backup, you need to perform the following steps to configure the Tivoli Storage Manager server correctly. Sample configuration commands are mentioned in this section. 1. Separately register each Storwize V7000 Unified system file module that need to participate in the backup as a Tivoli Storage Manager node on the Tivoli Storage Manager server. Figure 3 : An Example of register nodes 2. In addition to both the file modules, register an additional node on the Tivoli Storage Manager server. This Tivoli Storage Manager node is called proxy Tivoli Storage Manager node and allows access to a single file space on the Tivoli Storage Manager server for all the backup nodes. This node is used as the node independent of the file modules from which the files get 8

backed up to the Tivoli Storage Manager server, thus allowing restores from any file module back into the system. Figure 4 : An example of registering a proxy node 3. Grant proxy to all the Tivoli Storage Manager nodes related to file module to access additional Tivoli Storage Manager nodes on the Tivoli Storage Manager server. After configuring the nodes, query the configured nodes from the Tivoli Storage Manager server to verify the configuration. Figure 5 : An example of granting proxy to the nodes 4. Set the Tivoli Storage Manager server authentication to ON. Tivoli Storage Manager configuration on the Storwize V7000 Unified system The Tivoli Storage Manager client software is preinstalled on the Storwize V7000 Unified system on each of the file modules. Tivoli Storage Manager configuration can be performed either by the Storwize V7000 Unified system GUI or the CLI. Tivoli Storage Manager on Storwize V7000 Unified system configuration using GUI Perform the following steps to configure Tivoli Storage Manager on the Storwize V7000 Unified system using the GUI. 1. Figure 18 : Configured GPFS file system for backup summary Tivoli Storage Manager on Storwize V7000 Unified system configuration using CLI Perform the following steps for configuring Tivoli Storage Manager on Storwize V7000 Unified system using CLI. 1. Log in to IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system active management file module using CLI. 2. In order to configure the file modules to the Tivoli Storage Manager server, configure the connection information of the Tivoli Storage Manager server to each file module that need to participate in the backup activities. Invoke the cfgtsmnode configuration command from the CLI and for each of the file module. 15

Figure 19 : An example of the cfgtsmnode command 3. Verify the configured file modules for backup with the lstsmnode command. Figure 20 : An example of lstsmnode command 4. It is possible to configure multiple Tivoli Storage Manager servers to the file modules. However, any GPFS file system can be backed up to only a single Tivoli Storage Manager server. You cannot assign multiple Tivoli Storage Manager servers to backup the same GPFS file system. Therefore, associate the file system with a Tivoli Storage Manager server. Running the cfgbackupfs command creates cluster-wide association of a GPFS file system to the Tivoli Storage Manager server and backup file modules. This information is stored in the management database. Additionally, the command also verifies that no configuration exists for the given GPFS file system and that all the specified file modules are configured as backup nodes. Figure 21 : An example of the cfgbackupfs command 5. Verify the configured GPFS file system for backup using the lsbackupfs command. Notes: 1. IBM Tivoli Storage Manager backup / restore and NDMP backup / restore provide the same basic functionality of backing up or restoring file systems and the directories and files within the file 17

systems. It is not recommended and not supported to have both Tivoli Storage Manager backup restore processing and NDMP backup restore processing being used on the same Storwize V7000 Unified system for file modules. 2. Tivoli Storage Manager backups are normally scheduled operations, which can be scheduled at a time when other activity, such as general purpose file serving, is low. If possible, it is recommended performing backups during periods when other file serving activity is generally lower, perhaps late in the evening or early in the mornings. 3. Tivoli Storage Manager backup or restore processing significantly interferes with other Storwize V7000 Unified system file access functions, such as network file serving (CIFS, NFS, FTP, and HTTP). Many file module functions invoke the GPFS policy engine to evaluate a GPFS policy to determine the list of files to operate on. These include: Tivoli Storage Manager backup processing Tivoli Storage Manager HSM processing NDMP incremental backup processing Asynchronous replication processing The runpolicy CLI command and others The GPFS policy engine scans the file system metadata to determine the files that match the criteria specified in the policy. This scan of the file system metadata can generate a significant amount of I/O to the storage systems to read all the file system metadata, especially for file systems containing very large number of files. Therefore, it is recommended not to start all of these file access functions at exactly the same time, but instead stagger these functions over time. Performing IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system file modules backup using Tivoli Storage Manager You can perform IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system file modules backup using GUI or CLI. Before performing backups, ensure that the following configuration has been performed. The Tivoli Storage Manager server has been configured and the Storwize V7000 Unified system file modules have been registered. 32 HSM feature on IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system using Tivoli Storage Manager IBM Storwize V7000 system file modules use the HSM feature to migrate the data from the file modules to Tivoli Storage Manager server. While it would be ideal to have all the data available on the Storwize V7000 Unified system file modules all the time, this might be expensive for many organizations. The HSM feature of the Storwize V7000 Unified system can migrate bulk of the data to the Tivoli Storage Manager server, and then migrate it back to the Storwize V7000 Unified system whenever accessed. HSM data migrations take advantage of GPFS high-speed policy engine. User-defined GPFS policies migrate the data from IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system file modules to Tivoli Storage Manager. When the GPFS policy migrates the data from the file modules to the external Tivoli Storage Manager server, a small stub is left behind in the GPFS file system indicating that the file has been migrated. Any reference to read or update a migrated file causes the file to be recalled from the Tivoli Storage Manager server to the Storwize V7000 Unified system for processing. For configuring the HSM feature on IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system using Tivoli Storage Manager refer to the section of Managing Tivoli Storage Manager for Space Management from IBM Scale Out Network Attached Storage (SONAS) information center online. Tivoli Storage Manager for Storwize V7000 Unified system block I/O accessed files and volumes One of the flexible features of the Storwize V7000 Unified storage system is that it is designed to consolidate block and file workloads into a single storage system for simplicity of management, reduced cost, highly-scalable capacity, performance, and high availability. Tivoli Storage Manager can be used to back up and restore both the file and block data. The Storwize V7000 Unified file module data is backed up using the integrated Tivoli Storage Manager client as discussed in this paper. But, block files and volumes are backed up from the host system, where the files and volumes are assigned. The host, acting as the Tivoli Storage Manager client, accesses the block storage through a Fibre Channel or iscsi network, and transfers the backup data to the Tivoli Storage Manager server or from the Tivoli Storage Server, in the case of a restore. If you already have Tivoli Storage Manager in your data center, this is the same way that block data is handled for your existing block storage devices. An additional product that should be considered for block data backup and restore is Tivoli Storage Manager for SANs, which allows backup and restore data to travel over the SAN from the host server (Tivoli Storage Manager client) directly to the Tivoli Storage Manager server managed devices. This configuration referred to as LAN-free backup/restore removes data transfer from the LAN, providing highperformance backup/restore and minimizing LAN network traffic, improving application performance and transaction response times on the Tivoli Storage Manager server. LAN-free backup/restore is particularly effective for large files and volumes, such as those used in databases. Guidance for configuring a host accessing Storwize V7000 block data as a Tivoli Storage Manager client can be found in the Tivoli Storage Manager Information Center. 30

Recommendations Backing up a system, particularly a large file system with large number of files can add significant load to the IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system resources and can cause performance bottlenecks. The following recommendations can help you minimize performance impact to the system. If IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system file module s multiple file system are configured for Tivoli Storage Manager backups or HSM purposes, consider having multiple Tivoli Storage Manager servers to avoid performance bottleneck. As a guideline, use disk-pool as a primary storage pool and have sufficient space to back up Storwize V7000 Unified system data. Provide a sufficiently large disk pool behind the Tivoli Storage Manager server to buffer all the files that are being migrated during a Tivoli Storage Manager for Space Management task, typically 10 to 20% of the file system size, to avoid complications caused by tape mount point limits. Provide a sufficient number of tape drives to the Tivoli Storage Manager server to avoid mount point limit contention. Use a virtual tape library (VTL) behind the Tivoli Storage Manager server. As a guideline for faster backup performance, consider having higher network speed (10 Gb E) between file modules of Storwize V7000 Unified system and Tivoli Storage Manager server. Each file module can open up to eight sessions on the Tivoli Storage Manager server. Therefore, the Tivoli Storage Manager server should set its maximum connections to accommodate this. A recommended value for this is 100 sessions. By default, resource utilization in the file modules of the Storwize V7000 Unified system is set to 10. Sufficient reserve space must be available on a GPFS file system of the file modules of the Storwize V7000 Unified system before Tivoli Storage Manager for Space Management can be used. 32

Summary IBM Storwize V7000 Unified is a powerful storage system that combines server and storage components to provide a single point of control for file and block data storage. By enabling virtualization, consolidation, and tiering in mid-sized organizations, it is designed to improve application availability and resource utilization. The system offers easy-to-use, efficient, and cost-effective management capabilities for both new and existing storage resources in your IT infrastructure and thus addresses the new storage challenges posed by continuing explosion of data. IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system combines IBM servers running advanced network-attached storage software, and Storwize V7000 controllers with advanced block storage capabilities, providing thin provisioning, automated tiering, storage virtualization, clustering, replication, multi-protocol support, and a next-generation easy-to-use GUI. Single management interface to manage both block and file storage simplifies administration and provides more flexibility and less complexity. It allows organizations to increase capacity without adding complexity which can translate into reduced total cost of ownership (TCO), reduced capital expenditure, and enhanced operational efficiency. Together, these technologies are designed to enable the Storwize V7000 Unified system to deliver extraordinary levels of storage efficiency for both unstructured file data and block data storage needs. IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system has been integrated with Tivoli Storage Manager to effectively back up the system and restore the required data as per the user requirements. The HSM feature within the Storwize V7000 Unified system provides capability to store data on the less-expensive storage, such as tapes on Tivoli Storage Manager using advanced GPFS policy scan engine. The technical content contained herein is intended only as a reference for those customers who need to use Tivoli Storage Manager to back up their data from the IBM Storwize V7000 Unified system. It should not be treated as a definitive implementation or solution document due to the unique configurations and case-specific scenarios inherent in every customer environment.
