Course Syllabus for SPAN 1411 Elementary Spanish I 4 semester credit hours Course Description: This course is for students who have no previous instruction in the language. It is designed to acquaint the student with the four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Grammar and vocabulary are presented through intensive drills in the books, as well as on the website. Midland College is serving as the provider of instruction for this online, web-based course. The course consists of assignments received and submitted through Blackboard ( Instructor: Joan Sears jsears@midland.edu , ext The student must contact the instructor via on or before the first day of class instruction. (The student may not receive a reply until the first day of class instruction.) The course ( will be accessible to the student at 8:00 a.m. on the first day of class instruction. Navarro Ramil, Second Edition, Barron s Spanish Verb Tenses, by Dorothy Devney Richmond, Passport Books Complete Spanish Grammar by Gilda Nissenberg, McGraw-Hill Available at the Midland College Bookstore ( ) or online at Purchase textbooks before the first day of class instruction. Additional explanations and practice exercises will be available on the website. Course Goals/Objectives:
2 The beginning student of Spanish, in order to build a strong foundation in the basics of the target language and to be able to expand toward good conversational, reading, and writing abilities, should master the following: -the Spanish alphabet, basic phonetic system, and syntax (word order) -the subject pronouns, and definite/indefinite articles -approximately 650 vocabulary words -the meaning and conjugation of the most common of the AR, -ER and -IR verbs -the meaning and conjugation of some common irregular verbs -the formation of questions -the concept of masculine/feminine gender -the placement and agreement of adjectives -the irregular verb tener and expressions which use tener -the personal A -possession with de and short form possessives -the contractions al and del -the verbs ser and estar and some uses of each verb -telling time -the use of hay to mean there is or there are Learning Outcomes: Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to do the following: 1. Understand the Spanish alphabet, basic phonetic system, syntax, the concept of masculine/feminine [gender] nouns, the placement and agreement of adjectives, as well as Spanish punctuation and declension marks, and are able to demonstrate that understanding in at least 70 percent of written evaluations. 2. Have mastery of a Spanish vocabulary of approximately 1000 of the most commonly used words in the language, in addition to numbers from one to 100,000, the days of the week, the months of the year and expression of dates and time, using them correctly in at least 70 percent of written evaluations. 3. Understand subject pronouns and definite / indefinite articles, using them correctly in at least 70 percent of written evaluations. 4. Know the meaning and conjugation of the most common of the -AR, -ER and -IR verbs, as well as the meaning and conjugation of some common irregular verbs, using them correctly at least 70 percent of written evaluations. 5. Understand SER and ESTAR and some uses of each, as well as TENER and expressions that use TENER, using these correctly at least 70 percent of written evaluations. 6. Understand formation of questions, possessives and contractions AL and DEL and the use if IR A + the infinitive, using these correctly in at least 70 percent of written evaluations. Student Contributions and Class Policies: In a web class, the student must accept the responsibility for keeping up with the material on a daily basis. This is particularly important in a language class and in a short term. Therefore, you should be willing to commit a minimum of three hours each day to studying Spanish. Lab: This is a lab course, and you will receive one hour of credit for lab. You will meet the requirement by
3 completing and submitting assignments online. The assignments may come from your books or from worksheets on the website. Class Activities, Assignments, and Exams Focus: We will focus on the mastery of the constructions as presented in the texts and other exercises. We will be dealing with vocabulary building, verb usage, and grammar, all to be presented within the framework of explanation and subsequent reinforcement exercises. Major exams: You will have, including the final, three major exams this semester. The exams will be offered online and will be very strictly timed so that students will need to know the material well in order to finish. There will be a date when each exam is due, and you must complete the exam by the due date in order to receive full credit for it. There is a ten-point penalty for each day after the due date. The exams will be due by midnight CDT (Central Daylight Time). The final exam must be proctored (instructions will be posted). Note: You should take all exams before the night/day they are due in case of a computer glitch. When you complete an exam, check your grade IMMEDIATELY in the Tools section of the website. You should see a grade or an exclamation point. If there is a lock symbol where your grade should be, I did not receive the exam, and you need to contact me as soon as possible. Don t risk losing points by waiting until the last minute. Short quizzes: You will have a number of short quizzes, which you will take online. The quizzes will have a time limit, so you will need to be careful to keep up with the time when you are taking a quiz. There will be a date when each quiz is due, and you must take it by the assigned date to receive full credit for it. there is a tenpoint penalty for each day after the due date until the quiz is done. All quizzes will be due by midnight CDT. Note: You should take all quizzes before the night they are due in case of a computer glitch. When you complete a quiz, check your grade IMMEDIATELY in the Tools section of the website. You should see a grade or an exclamation mark. If there is a lock symbol where your grade should be, I did not receive the quiz, and you need to contact me as soon as possible so that I can repost it. Don t risk losing points by waiting until the last minute. Lab assignments: Lab assignments will be submitted online. Lab assignments must be submitted in a file that I can open by the due date in order to receive full credit for them. After the due date, ten points will be subtracted for each day until the file is submitted. All assignments are due by midnight CDT. Note: You should submit all assignments before they are due in order to avoid any problems. When you submit your lab assignment, check your grade immediately in the Tools section of the website. You should see an exclamation point. If there is a lock symbol instead, it means that you saved the lab instead of submitting it, and you need to go back into it and click on the Submit button to send it to me. Don t risk losing points by waiting until the last minute. Oral Exercise: You are required to submit one oral exercise. You will need to call and read the assignment as a voice message. The oral assignment is 10% of your grade. There will be a ten-point penalty for each day after the due date. Final exam: The final exam, which has the same value as a major exam, will cover the material we study after the second exam. The final exam must be proctored (instructions will be posted) There will be no extra credit work in this class. There are no make-ups, but assignments can be submitted up to 10 days late with a grade penalty of 10 points per day.
4 Grading: The computer will grade your exams and quizzes upon submission, but I will re-score them to look for other possible correct answers. Recheck your score after a few days; then contact me if you have a question. Computer literacy: You must have basic computer skills to take this class. You need to know how to download files, save them, retrieve them, and attach them. You also need to know how to go into the control panel of your computer to make changes, and you need to know how to use . Each student must maintain a single current address for this class. You need to be sure that the address is entered into your personal information in Blackboard. If you change your address during the semester, you need to enter the new address into Blackboard. ALWAYS indicate the course number: SPAN 1411 in the subject line of the so that I will recognize that it is from a student. Evaluation of Students: 10% - oral exercise. 10% - lab assignments 20% - quizzes 20% - exams 40% - final exam 90 to A 80 to 89 - B 70 to 79 - C 60 TO 69 - D 59 and below - F Students with Disabilities: Midland College provides services for students with disabilities through Student Services. In order to receive accommodations, students must place documentation on file with the Counselor/Disability Specialist. Students with disabilities should notify Midland College prior to the beginning of each semester. Student Services will provide each student with a letter outlining any reasonable accommodations. The student must present the letter to the instructor at the beginning of the semester. BLACKBOARD LOGIN DIRECTIONS You will not be able to access your course in Blackboard until the first day of class instruction. If you have registered late, please allow 24 hours for the webmaster to place you in the class.
