1 Overview of Notre Dame CSE Demographics The demographic information of Notre Dame CSE students are shown in Figure 5. Our analysis of the demographics data of the Notre Dame Computer Science and Engineering students reveals many interesting trends. Figure 1 and 2 show trends in gender ratios and racial compositions of classes 2013 to 2018 respectively. For gender diversity, the number of male students is consistently higher than the number of female students over the years. This is not surprising since men traditionally outnumber women in computer science and computer engineering, or even engineering in general. Interestingly, in recent classes, the ratio of male students to female students in the CSE department has dropped from about 3.6:1 in the class of 2014 to 2.5:1 in the class of 2017 and As for racial diversity, there are no significant changes in racial compositions over the years. In each class, about 70% of the class are white; 10% are asian; 10% are Hispanic; and the rest consists of African American, Native American, multiple and unknown. Figure 1. ND CSE Gender Ratio

2 Figure Timeline of ND CSE Ethnic Demographic Notre Dame CSE vs. Entire ND population The demographic information of the entire ND population is shown in figure 3 and 4. Comparing CSE students to the entire ND population, we found that the racial composition is very similar. However, the gender ratio is significantly different. In the general ND population, female students slightly outnumber male student with a ratio of 1.09 to 1, while in CSE student male students outnumber female student with a ratio of more than 2 to 1. Timeline of ND Gender and Demographic Populations Notre Dame CSE vs. General US Population In addition to analyzing the demographic distribution of the ND community, we compared the overall gender and racial demographic of the U.S. population and the ND CS and Engineering students shown in Figure 5. Shown in Figure 6, the percentages of U.S. population demographics are taken from the 2012 U.S. Census Bureau estimates. In studying the similarities between these two studies, Non-Hispanic White ethnicities have the highest population density with 63.7% in the U.S., and about 63%-76% from Notre Dame CSE students from While the second highest population in the U.S. is found by Hispanics or Latinos (16.3%), the second highest demographic from the ND CSE students has been a very close tie between people of Hispanic or Asian ethnicities. Non-Hispanic Black Americans based on the U.S. polling comes in third with 12.2% of the population, while Black students in CSE have a much smaller population percentage in addition to Native American students, and mixed-students.

Percentages of U.S. Population based on 2012 U.S. Census Bureau Notre Dame CSE vs. Other Institutions In analyzing the demographic reports from ND CSE students and other institutions, we decided that we would compare Harvard University's student population statistic (as shown on Figure 7). While the demographic of white students compose about more than half of the University's population, Asian Americans compose of almost a quarter of the population. Populations from African American, Hispanic or Latino, and Native American or Pacific Islander ethnicities total to more than a quarter of the Harvard s population. These statistics closely resemble the population analysis seen in the ND CSE students Department and the general Notre Dame community we analyzed above.

6 Figure 7. Harvard University s Population Demographic Notre Dame CSE vs. Top Tech Companies: We were able to find data on the demographics of the top technology companies on the website Gigaom. The demographic information of top technology companies are shown in Figure 8 and Figure 9. We found that although when compared to the general Notre Dame student body, the Notre Dame Computer Science and Engineering class lacks gender diversity, the Computer Science and Engineering class is actually scoring more on the gender diversity points than most of the top technology companies, including Facebook, Google and Apple. For both the top technology companies and the Notre Dame CSE class, males greatly outnumber females. However, the percentage of women over the entire population is higher for Notre Dame CSE class, and it continues to grow. When analyzing the demographics of the top technology companies, we found that Caucasians and Asian are indisputably the majority of the workforce populations. In several companies such as Yahoo and LinkedIn, Asian employees outnumber the white employees by a sizable margin. We did not find this pattern in the Notre Dame CSE student population. The CSE class consists of mostly white students, with Asians or Hispanics coming next with a much smaller percentage. Also, in all of the companies except Apple listed in Figure 9, Black, Hispanic, American Indian, and other Non-Caucasian, Non-Asian employees make up less than 10% of the entire technology workforce. For Notre Dame s CSE class, Non-Caucasian and Non-Asian students constitute about 20% of the entire class.
