3 Straight Forward English Series Dear Parents and Teachers, The Straight Forward English Series has been designed for parents, teachers, and students. The Series is composed of books designed to measure, teach, review, and master specific English skills. The focus of this book is verbs. What makes this series different? These are the verb skills essential to the mastery of English structure and form. This series reflects national standards crucial to mastery of verbs. Verb skills are concisely explained, practiced, and tested. Mastery can be measured by comparing the Beginning Assessment Test with the Final Assessment Test. More content. No distracting or unrelated pictures or words. The skills are straightforward. How to use this book: Give the Beginning Assessment Test to gain a starting measure of a student s verb skills. Progress through each topic. Work the exercises. Exercise work can be done in the book or on a separate sheet of paper. Set a standard to move from one topic to the next. If the standard is not met, go back and refocus on that topic. Give the Final Assessment Test to gain an ending measure of a student s verb skills. Compare the Beginning Assessment Test and Final Assessment Test as a reflection of skill acquisition. 3

5 CHAPTER1 Action Action verbs tell what someone or something is doing. Some verbs tell what someone or something does. These types of verbs are called action verbs. EXAMPLES: He speaks loudly. What does he do? He speaks. William and Alicia run everyday. What do William and Alicia do? They run. They leave each morning at 8:00 A.M. What do they do? They leave. The ball drops onto the field. 7 CHAPTER2 Linking Linking verbs do not show action. Linking verbs join the subject of a sentence with the predicate of a sentence. Linking verbs tell what someone or something (the subject) is or is like. EXAMPLES: She is a good friend. is links she and friend. Mexico is a nation in North America. is links Mexico and nation. Mexico is large. is links Mexico and large. The linking verbs used most often are: am, is, are, was, were. Linking verbs have singular and plural forms: Singular Plural I am I was we are we were you are you were you are you were he, she, it is he, she, it was they are they were Other verbs are linking verbs too. Other common linking verbs are: seem, feel, become, appear, look, sound, smell, and taste. Exercise 1. Underline the linking verb in each sentence. 1. He is the only one from his family. 2.
