(2005). Essentials of Human Communication, (5 th edition). Pearson and Allyn & Bacon Course Description: This course is a survey of basic factors affecting human interaction through communication; emphasis on the development of oral communication competencies; practice in delivering oral presentations; 3 credit course. Course Objectives: The Speech 1311 course is designed to provide the opportunity for students to demonstrate competency in communication interactions. The student is expected to learn and be able to execute the following: Possess the ability to read, write, speak, listen/comprehend information, and apply critical thinking skills/research techniques in a clear, correct, concise, coherent manner. Effectively use computer based technology to assist in achieving the skills cited above in both the written and oral presentation mode. Understand the importance of cultural diversity and its impact and skill development (technique). This affords the student the opportunity to effectively utilize the skills and behaviors learned so that the student can communicate more effectively and appropriately in a variety of situations. Thus, the major emphasis of this course focuses on the development of effective interpersonal relationships and how to enhance these relationships through the development of communication competency. Basic Skills In order to be successful in this course, student must possess college level skills in reading and writing. If student is in doubt as to his/her skill level, student is advised to speak with his/her instructor or counselor. Developmental courses are available to strengthen skills in these areas. 2 RELIGIOUS HOLY DAYS In accordance with Section of the Texas Education Code, CCCC will allow a student who is absent from class for the observance of a religious holy day to take an examination or complete a scheduled assignment within a reasonable time. Students are required to file a written request with each professor within the first fifteen days of the semester to qualify for an excused absence. A copy of the state rules and procedures regarding holy days and the form for notification of absence from each class under this provision are available from the Registrar s Office. Professor s Course Expectations: Students are expected to come to class on time and remain until the professor dismisses the class. Read the assigned units BEFORE coming to class. I will not lecture straight from the book and will not cover everything from each chapter. Additionally, I will be providing supplemental information that is not in your text that you will be responsible for learning. Class participation: I expect that all of you will be active participants in this class. That means that you listen to those speaking, think about what is said, and share your thoughts. A good portion of this class will be spent doing activities/exercises, group work, and having small/large group discussions. Your participation is both valuable and necessary and is therefore a portion of your final grade. You will get out of this class what you put into it. All activities done in class will be worth points. You will receive points if you are present and participate during the activity. If you are not present or do not participate, you will not receive the points. These points CANNOT be made up. Attendance: My expectation is that you will come to class. Each class period is valuable and a large amount of material will be covered. It is necessary for you to attend class in order to comprehend the material and be an active participant. In the event that a student should be absent from class, it is the student s responsibility to get any missed handouts or assignments and any missed notes and/or activities from another student. I do not take points off of your grade for absences. However, if you do not regularly attend class, it will be impossible for you to pass this class. Additionally, you MUST be on time on your assigned speech day. If you are late, you will receive an automatic 50% reduction of your overall speech grade. Deadlines: All assignments are due at the beginning of the class period. Assignments are considered late after the first 15 minutes of class. I do not accept late assignments. Only extenuating circumstances will be considered as an excuse for an assignment to be late. A hospital stay for family members or work related required travel or death in the immediate family constitute an excused absence. It is for this reason that you should plan ahead. If you are unsure as to whether you will be in class on a day that an assignment is due, turn it in early. You may hand in assignments Monday-Friday during business hours to Office B103 and the administrative assistant will place it in my mailbox. You may also any assignment to me before the class period in which it was due. You may also send in an assignment with a fellow classmate. Again, please do not ask to turn something in late if you do not have an extenuating circumstance (i.e. illness, death in family).. Academic Integrity: I do not tolerate any form of academic dishonesty. According to the Student Handbook (7-1.3), The College may initiate disciplinary proceedings against a student accused of scholastic dishonesty. Scholastic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to, one or more of the following acts: cheating, plagiarism, collusion, use of annotated texts or teacher s editions, and/or falsifying academic records. If you are unsure as to what each of these offenses entails, please see the Student Handbook for clarification. I have a no tolerance policy when it comes to any violations

3 of scholastic integrity. I respect each of you and I expect you, in turn, to respect me, your fellow classmates, the rules of this classroom, and the college. Respect for others: Due to the nature of this class, your classmates may be sharing personal information or stories about themselves throughout the semester. I will also be sharing personal stories and information. I expect each of you to respect your classmates and the instructor. Please refrain from using any demeaning, racist, sexist, or otherwise inappropriate language in this classroom toward another student or the instructor. Cell phone policy: Cell phones MAY NOT be used at any time during the class period. This includes cell phones ringing as well as text messaging. It is not only disrespectful to the instructor, but also to the other students in the class. Course Withdrawal: It is the student s responsibility to withdraw from the course and is a formal procedure which the student must initiate. The student must go to the registrar s office and fill out the appropriate paperwork to withdraw. If you decide to withdraw from the course but do not withdraw formally, you will receive a performance grade of F. To receive a grade of I (Incomplete), the student must be passing the course and have completed 80% of the assignments and have attended 80% of the class sessions. The student must gain permission from the instructor ahead of time to be considered for an I. Often, students drop courses when help is available to enable them to continue. If you are considering dropping the course, please discuss your decision with me prior to taking formal action to withdraw. The last day to withdraw from the course is Friday, April 13, About my teaching style: Because of my background in management and communication training, I am very interested in applying what we learn in class to our work and social activities. We will have several opportunities during class time to relate examples we are seeing outside the classroom to our fellow students. I am interested in your taking a risk and using creativity and excitement in your presentations. I want you to do well in this class and to learn from me and from one another. I also hope to learn from each of you. If you have questions, please ask them, I am always happy to answer questions. If you are confused or need more explanation, do not hesitate to ask. I do not have regular office hours, so you may me, and I will make every effort to have a response to you within 24hrs. We can all expect to have some fun in this class. However, this is a professional atmosphere, and I encourage you to keep that in mind at all times. Course REQUIREMENTS: Two written tests ( 200 points) Introduction Speech (100 points). Impromptu Speech (50 bonus points) Informative Speech (100 points) Mini Labs (50 points) Concept Written Report (100 points).

4 Pop Quizzes (50 points) Final Group Presentation (150 points) Exemplary Class Participation ( 100 points) Bonus/Extra Credit opportunities will be given throughout the semester GRADING SCALE: The following scale will be used to calculate grades for this class: A B C D F 599 or below **This class is based on a points system. Everything that you do in class will be worth a designated amount of points. You should keep track of how many points you accrue throughout the semester as well as how many possible points are available in order to be aware of your grade. At any time, you can divide the number of points you have accumulated by the total points possible at that point in the semester to figure out your letter grade. Requirement Descriptions: Written Exams (Two =200 points) Exams will consist of true/false questions, multiple choice questions. Specifically, I want to see that you can remember the concepts and theories that you have learned and can apply them. Exams will be given in the testing center and will remain there for one week. There will be no make up exams after that week. Concept Report: (150 pts.) This is a paper you will be writing during the semester and is based on real life experiences from your lives. You will be asked to take concepts learned in class and communication skills you have acquired and apply them to your personal experiences. You may choose a television program or feature film as your example. This paper is your opportunity to show me that you understand the concepts and can recognize them in real life situations.

5 Pop Quizzes: (50 pts.) Throughout the semester, five pop quizzes will be given at the beginning or end of class. The quizzes will be one question over material will are discussing in class. These quizzes are meant to randomly test your listening skills in the class and reward those who regularly attend class. While I do not have an attendance policy which punishes those who do not attend, I do reward those who attend regularly by giving pop quizzes. If you are not in attendance when the quiz is given, you may not make up the points. Each quiz will be worth ten points. Five points will be given simply for taking the quiz, and five points will be given should you answer the question correctly. Given that they are called pop quizzes, they will not be announced ahead of time. Group Project/Presentation: (150 pts.) For this assignment, you will need to be in groups. I suggest that you get to know your classmates well as your group members will be helping you receive a good grade. You will l complete the entire project as a group and will also be graded as a group. A specific guideline sheet will be provided later in the semester regarding this assignment. Bonus points may be given for outstanding contributions by individuals in the groups. Two Speeches (200 pts.) Each student will deliver a total of two individual speeches in front of the class. The first speech is a speech of introduction where students a short speech (2 to 3 minutes) about something they would like to share with the class. The final speech is a speech of information or demonstration and will be a longer speech (3to 5 minutes). The final grade will include students ability to follow a designated format and effective delivery elements. Exemplary Participation: (100 pts.) As was stated earlier, class participation is necessary in a communication class such as this. This is an easy chance for you to earn 100 points toward your grade if you attend class every class period and participate in the class. This includes participation in group discussions as well as participation in class activities. Bonus Points: Extra points will be given for various activities throughout the semester. If you choose to give an Impromptu Speech to the class, you can receive 50 extra points. Other activities will include sharing experiences from outside the class that apply to our concept discussions (a written summary plus oral presentation) for 5 points each. Articles from newspapers, journals, other textbooks, etc will be presented to the class for 10 extra points. Student Learning Outcomes: 1. Exhibit understanding of theories and principles pertaining to speech communication. 2. Demonstrate ability to compose and present an oral presentation effectively. 3. Demonstrate critical thinking ability by effectively applying communication theories in the analysis and evaluation of communication interactions. 4. Demonstrate an understanding of the value of listening skills.. 5. Demonstrate understanding of interpersonal communication skills. 6. Demonstrate ability to synthesize material/ideas generated by group members into an effective group presentation. Course Schedule
