Olstykke Lyngby Hvidovre Informant was work colleague with one of the authors of the thesis and agreed for the interview when asked personally. 1 st part How long you got the sorting system? - We ll get it on first of May. We ve been informed through a paper about this sorting system. It s everything, and you get some stickers to you trash so you know what to sort. I think it s going to be a problem because down stairs, on the wall, it s on the waste dumb, I just put down with everything. Cardboard, renovation, everything it s just pushed outside. I think it s have to be problem because we have to share the same rules. Where is the paper from?

- Glostrup kommune, about a month ago. On the house meeting we talked a little bit about it, but there were like, 20 people and here we are lot of people, so it s not everyone that heard about it. You have meeting? - Once a year, every of this buildings around, and we are like a small community. So, one time in a year you can meet with the borger and say hey I don t like this, or this. It s people from Glostrup kommune came at the meeting? - No, just our members. Your attitude about waste? - I think it s smart that they want to do that. But when we lived in Olstykke they did the same system and then we found out that they put all in the same dumpster. And we were angry because they were doing it. So, if it s like that again I will be angry because I will spend money and buy all this, but I think it s important for environment, we can use a lot of recycling to do different things. How you found out that in Olstykke? - One morning, we came out and they took both containers and up in the same dumpster. And we were like shouldn t you take the one and next day the other? and they oh but we don t have money to do so we used really lot of hours to do sorting. And then it came into magazine, and there were really lot of problems in Olstykke about it. Did you like to sort? - I would like to do it. My boyfriend it s good in doing it. I would do it if I have to but I really don t see how because one container get emptied every one week at a time, but we have 6 containers, how this is going to work. I can see we can earn money on it, but it s a lot of hours for men to come. So, I cannot see it get in. You would like more information about how this process will go after you put your trash out. - Yes, I would like that. Because if costs us more to do it I don t see why should we. If we don t do it we get a feet, and that feet will go here for the rent if people don t do it. I see that people argue and they don t like that, so we have to see. I think the rent will rise. It s ok if works for community. But if it costs a lot of money and we don t get our roads fixed because of that I wouldn t do it. 5 associations about waste? - Every day renovation. Plastic, Cans, Metals, China, Garden. What is your attitude towards organic waste? - You can always use it in compost or something like that. I think it s a good idea because you can use a natural resource for it, like get your plant up. I think it is something more about it but I don t know enough about. 5 associations with organic waste? - Banana peel. Food waste I can understand in 2 ways, one it s really the banana shell and when you have a lot of food you don t eat, and then you have a lot of food you don t eat and you waste it. So you

don t have to buy more that you can eat. A lot of restaurants have this thing; don t take more than you can eat, because they throw out a lot of food. Do you follow your consumption? - I don t think we throw a lot of food. I want to make a schedule with what we eat every day, especially evenings. But right now my boyfriend it s very idiotic on that subject so he buy food every day. So it s like I want beef tonight we go out and buy beef. And tomorrow I want chicken so I am going to buy chicken. And this use a lot of hours! Right now we don t buy anything we don t eat but I would like to make a schedule so we can get down in money also. Are you sorting the organic waste separately? - No, not right now. My boyfriend is doing with the cans, but that s everything, only thing he sorts right now. Food waste it s going with everything else? - Yeah, I have 2 bins in my kitchen and he only have one. So everything comes in the same. Out there I put everything in 2 and you don t sort right now. How far away are the trash bins? - Showing it (close) Any effort to do it? - No, because I take the bus over there, and then just put out the waste. Is it easy accessible to open, to close it? - Yes, but you need a key to do it. So the other don t put their bags in. You had problems with that before? - I don t know. There s always being a key on the door when I came in. But I know in my boyfriend s house there were problems with other houses coming and putting their garbage there. Because if the house is here, and the trash bins are in opposite to the buss station so they just go and put it in their and then going to the busses. 1 Are the trash bins looking nice? - They are not clean, very smelly out there. I would like to have more because we have 4 outside right now. One is for paper and not enough space because we get every time Tuesday the waste emptied. The container is overfilled already. Almost falling out, so people just let the garbage down and not putting it in. It s not nice for garbage men, but what can we do, we don t have the key for another one. I don t know what it will happen in the future, maybe they will rebuild the trucks or, I don t know. Do you washing hands? 1 In the discussion, she explain about the trash and bus station by showing around and just saying here, there, which will be not understandable on transcript.

- No, it s just things that are decomposing, so no. But if there s something on the hand, then I go and wash my hand. What kind of trash bag are you using? - Black. I buy, sometimes when I don t have it I use the shopping bags. Are they with closing mechanism? - Yeah, because if there s any food coming out, there ll be mice or rats who will come, and I am living on the ground floor, so I don t want that. So, if there s mice or rats, they will try to get in, especially we have basement over here, so, if you don t close it, then mice and rats will come. How much garbage you are producing? - I think I go out with garbage 2-3 times a week. Right now I ve been a lot because I ve been a little bit ill and had a lot of stuff on my face. What are you throwing out mostly? - Food wraps. That s the most because everything it s packed in it, some meat products have even 2 plastic on it, and I am why, why you use so much? that s very much of plastic use that s the most stuff that comes out. You follow your electricity and water consumption? - I have the app for DONG on my phone. And I try to keep it under how much they expect I will use. Now I am 21% under. Every contact it s pushed off, so it s not on standby if it s not used. But we share the water, so, if one uses more water than me, I still have to pay what he used. This year I got 300 kr more than I pay, but it s not much, and they put it over the rent, so I don t think about it. And last year I got 1000 kr back but the garden is new for community, so only for the first time we used the tube but after you have to go with the bottles. How did you decided about sorting? - First I saw it at my parents. I ve heard a lot about it, I think we can use a lot of it. I, myself don t throw gum on the street, because it takes 5 years to decompose. I don t know where it came from, I like to sort it. I think we should use the resource we have. If it s me sorting out my garbage then it s fine, we can recycle it, use for something else, re-change it to something new. Does it takes any effort? - Yes, I have to change my routines. And I like routines. And I ve heard it takes about 8 weeks to change routines, so, I am ok in about 8 weeks, but until that I will have to use extra time to think about when I am doing it. It s your kitchen equipped for that? - I will do it at 1 May when we ll get new system. Are the new stickers helpful? - Yes, they help visualizing. I think it s a good idea that they give the stickers, and can help the kids. Do you find your kitchen with enough space?

- No. I would like to add extra garbage cans because there s 5 things that we have to sort, and I have just 2. So, I don t know where to put it. My boyfriend said he saw something in Ikea. So you can just pull it out, under the sink. I am going today to see it. I am a little bit sad it costs money to do it but if it s beneficial Would you like if municipality would provide you? - Yeah, this will be the best, because I am not choosing it, I don t chose to do it. It s Commune who came and push it you have to do it. And when you push people with you have to do it some people will get rebellion and don t do it and make it not good for anyone else. If they have paid and say, we know we made all this on you, we pay whatever takes for you to do it. Because if I chose it myself I don t have any problems to do it, but I didn t chose it. Who is responsible to carry out the garbage? - Me, because I go to study and take it. My boyfriend, if he is not busy in the morning then he can do it. I would say we are doing it equally. But mostly me, because he has a car down here, and he doesn t need to go to bus. You have outside descriptions on the bins? - Yes, there s descriptions. In what we got from the commune it s what to put and what to not put. Your parents living in a house or apartment? - Now apartment, but they were living in a house. Were they sorting food waste? - Yes. I was about 11 or 12, when new system came in. And then we found out that (mention to previous sentence that garbage men put all together) You mentioned you have home meetings, you discussed about new sorting system? - Yes, because we saw that the people are not so good at putting the trash in the containers. We need to find some kind of solution to do it. They talked about to dig down in the earth a big box and then they can lift it out and put it down again. But they didn t know at that time what kind of sorting system it s going to be, so we can speak about how to do the garbage. I don t know what s going be in the end. Who takes care of the bins outside? - Larsen. But I am not sure. Any trash containers are missing? - No. The garbage men, are they putting the containers same as in Olstykke, all in one? - Yes. But we don t have yet the sorting system yet, just 4 big containers and one for paper. You said it will be difficult, what it will take you to change your routine? - I will need to think every time, when I throw this out, where should I put it. The information that Glostrup send you will help?

- I will have to look many times. I will have to change the ideas about many stuff. Sorting can bring benefits to global environment. - I don t know, don t have many information. Local? - I heard we can make some money on that, but I need to see it, to give it a try. Have you been to a recycling plant? - Yes. It was very funny to see how to do stuff. I was 13. It was the school. We had small communities we were taught how to use recycling stuff. Where do you get rid of bigger stuff? - We have where we keep the bikes, and they come 2 a month and pick it. Would you be more motivated to sort if you knew that recycling can produce energy? - Yes. If they will have cheaper energy. I would like something back, because I am using my time to do it. If you get some benefits for doing a good job I will feel good, it will not be like they put it down on me. Do you think some law or regulation or punishment will help people? - No. because then they will do it like in Egypt. Because I don t like to get a fee so I can just throw out of my window when I am drawing a car. Meaning of sorting waste in general? - Lose a lot of time. Where would you like to have the bins, containers? - I think it s fine where they are now, it s central for these 3 houses. I liked the old system when you had a hole in the basement, you throw it out and they sort it. I think it s now easier for the one who takes care of the area, to take the trash out for the garbage men. That person was hired from the municipality? - No, it s maintained by person from house administration. What does it means sustainability and can you give an example? - You saw, I plan tomatoes, strawberries, and if I can do more about it s better instead of buying it. To know where your thing come from. I would like to have house so I can get chickens so have my own garden with lot of tomatoes, carrots and so on. I think it s important you can do it. Are you aware where your food comes from, ecologic food. - Not always because I live on SU. If it s cheap I can buy it, but I buy what I can afford it. Would you like a greenhouse? - I would like it but it s not allowed to do it. Sustainable living, and you live sustainable?

- I can try to live sustainably, but I know I cannot because I have asthma, allergy, so about pets, I cannot do it. It s amazing if you can do it but it s difficult in Denmark to do it. Have you thought about impact on future generations? - I would like to teach my kids to think about environment, because if we don t think about it our earth will fall apart. Right now I don t live like I want to do because I don t have money to do it, time to do it. But I have ideas about what would I want to. I do follow the light at my house, I changed the light bulbs with LED. I do it while taking shower, when I wash my hair I switch it off so I am not using it a lot of water. 2 What does it means climate change for you? - Climate change, I can understand the problem I can see the problem, but right now what kind of climate change we are looking at because it s still winter outside. I know we don t talk just about Denmark, and I know Maldives are getting problems because the water is getting higher and higher and at some point they will disappear. But if we have to do something about it then all world have to do it, like the Kyoto agreement. So they say if have so much of this, so I can sell it to this one I think it s a problem, because the can say oh, they don t use all the crop, so we can sell to them because they use it a lot but then, they don t think to get it down, so I think it gets a problem that way. Do you think you can impact it some way? - No, if we all cannot do it then no. I can start to do it with my friends, but if we all not do it then I don t think it will impact it. How important it s the environmental condition around the place you live? - I like it. Where I was living before it was no green at all, so I like the trees and green. We have the maintain person that takes care of the area, do the grass. We have one day when we can go out and take care of places, plant flowers and stuff like that, that s everything. Now I am lucky to have a garden so I have lot of ideas to plant out there. Do you participate in those days? - Yeah. I like flowers as you can see, and I think it s good to know whom you are living with because only think I know is that they have 2 kids that are really noisy and an old couple here. I really like to meet people over here. Are you throwing packaging out in the street? - No. If you say someone else doing it? - I pick it up and throw it in the first trash I see it. I don t touch anything grouse, if it s gum or something like that. I don t take that. But we have a school here, and kids go down in the corner because there s a kiosk, and they go and throw everything down, so when I see I take it and throw it out. I don t like to look at, I like to look at something nice. 2 Information about how she collects ideas from Facebook and store them were left out of discussion.

Did you try speaking with them? - If you try you ll get this one (showing one finger) and say you re not my mum. We have on Facebook group for Glostrup where you can write I saw kids from this school doing this today and maybe the parents should talk about it with their children. But it still I don t know how much it changes. - Hearing about sorting system from a friend in the school. She was the test person for this system. They were 15 families to see how it works. PHOTOS 3 DRAWINGS DRAWING 1 - I draw me, and it s me going with the waste that is going to forbraendning, then it goes down to some kind of production, and from that is going to some kind of packet and then to some kind of (???) and then back to me. And energy can be anything. DRAWING 2 - It takes me to go out with waste, garbage guy from the waste to incineration, and then some expert in that area will do something about production, production guys will get it, and so one. But you said that you are separating paper, and normal garbage, what is then happening with those? - I told a little earlier, I think they get more work to do, and the local have to hire more to do it because you have to do something about trucks that can take all the garbage Then here, inside actors will need special persons to sort, or what did you mean by more work? - It s because we have to sort it out and they ll come once a week to get it. if is not like they put it all together in the same truck. If they put it in the same truck I don t know why we have to sort it. that s what I meant that they have to come more trucks or more people. So there s be involved more men or truck drivers. - Yes. It s going to be more work for them and local area. But we have to see what they do in the end. 2 nd part Carina: So it s that people are miss leaded where to put their stuff? It s just very funny that people created their own system. - But we know that about Sunday, these are just fshuuti. As you can see it s a very Carina: Oh, yeah, it s a very creative stuff that people are throwing in that they shouldn t actually be there. So garbage men opens the separate door? Dace: Why they shouldn t be there, inside? This is pap? 3 Ikea came with sorting system, her boyfriend found it.

- Yeah. Dace: But you don t have the possibility to sort it. - Yeah, we have it over there and over there to put it. Dace: Yeah, but you even don t remember, and persons probably also don t know. You have to go out to the specific place to get so other place, where do you have? - I think it s over here. Dace: And you usually bring out pap or no? - No. I don t, my boyfriend does. Dace: And the glass, do you have possibility to put the glass? - Yeah, is there. Dace: Is this? Ok. Carina: So you also go all the way over here? - I am not, my boyfriend does. Dace: she didn t even know where it is, is there or there - They have different places, they also have big containers over here where they are dumping their stuff. Dace: so this is put in the common garbage, I was carrying it around all the time, like, I can find the plastic place.
