16 Extract from the European Union Website : What is the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)? A free card that gives you access to medically necessary, state-provided healthcare during a temporary stay in any of the 27 EU countries, Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. How to recognise the card The cards can be easily recognised. The front of the card looks the same and carries the same information, although in different languages, in each country. The back of the card can vary from country to country. You can click on a country (below) to see what it looks like in that country. Who can benefit from the card? To be eligible for a card, you must be insured by or covered by a state social security system in any Member State of the European Union, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland. Each separate member of a family travelling should have their own card. People from non-eu countries who are legally residing in the EU and are covered by a state social security scheme are also eligible for a card. However, nationals from non- EU countries cannot use their EHIC for medical treatment in Denmark, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. How does it work? When you show your EHIC, you will receive treatment under the same conditions and at the same cost (free in some countries) as people insured in that country. Be aware that each country s healthcare system is different. Services that cost you nothing at home might NOT be free in another country. What else do I need to know? The EHIC is NOT an alternative to travel insurance. It does not cover any private healthcare or costs such as a return flight to your home country or lost/stolen property. The EHIC does NOT cover your costs if you are travelling for the express purpose of obtaining medical treatment.

17 Medical treatment in Italy Emergency Call 118 (free of charge) When you call, the level of emergency will be assessed by a medical professional. Treatment & costs Doctors You should consult a doctor that is registered with the Italian national health service (Servizio Sanitario Nazionale SSN/ASL). You may be charged a fee for some services. This is not refundable in Italy but you may be able to seek reimbursement when you are back home. SSN Surgeries are open week days. Opening hours are usually from the morning to the afternoon. In case of emergency, SSN Hospital surgeries are ready to operate every day. Dentists Most dentists are private, and do not accept the European Health Insurance Card. You will be charged for their services. In very rare cases it is possible to consult a dentist at a SSN operated hospital or visit an ASL managed health centre. Hospital treatment The ASL can supply a list of SSN hospitals or private hospitals that operate under the state scheme. To receive hospital treatment you do not have to contact the ASL in advance. You must show your European Health Insurance Card. Prescriptions Some medicines do not need a prescription. The pharmacist will be able to tell if the medicine you require needs a prescription. When you present a prescription to a pharmacist, you also have to show your European Health Insurance Card.

18 Some medicines are free of charge, others not and may require the payment of an individual fee. This is non-refundable in Italy, but you may be able to seek reimbursement when you are back home. Over-the-counter medicines are nonrefundable. Ambulance Ambulance services are free of charge provided that a medical professional /doctor confirms that there is a real need for an ambulance. If you use an ambulance and no urgency is declared, you will have to pay the ambulance service charges. These are not refundable in Italy but you may be able to seek reimbursement when you are back home. If you contact a private ambulance provider which has no agreement with the National Health System (SSN) you will be charged. This is non-refundable in Italy. Air ambulance Same rules as for ambulance. Reimbursement There are no reimbursements. You will only be charged your share of the costs. If you have had to pay for the cost of your care, you should contact your national health insurance provider when you return home to claim a reimbursement.
