3 1. Introduction Introduction 1.1 What is DVR Reader? Main idea of using DVR Reader is to view the images from DVR s HDD on the PC. By simply taking out the HDD from DVR and placing the HDD into the PC, DVR Reader will automatically read the image from the HDD. The software also brings several features including saving image in AVI file, KPEG file or BMP file. KPEG file format is invented by our company engineers and its file size is 5~10% of AVI files. The main disadvantage of using the AVI file format were the file size as well as saving time. Printing and searching images are available with the software. Most of current users save the important materials in either moving or stationary image into CD by utilizing CD-writer. 1.2 Main Viewer Page 1.3 Required System Configuration CPU RAM VGA Intel Celeron 600MHz or above 256MB or above Resolution has to be 800x600 or above with 24 bit color mode IEEE 1394 Interface Card Required External HDD Rack 4 or 8 Bays (Has to be connected with IEEE 1394 Interface) OS Microsoft Windows 2000 Recommended 3/25

4 2. Installation INSTALLATION 2.1 Installing Software You will find an installation CD from DVR. Please select DVR Readersetup.exe and run the file. 1) When you run the file, you will see below diagram on your monitor. Click Next to continue. 2) Click Next button again and next step is to select the installing directory. Please select where you want to install the software. 3) You can make the shortcut of the software. Please select the name of shortcut. 4) When you click Next button, it will ask you to confirm the directory and name of short cut. Click Next to start installation. 5) Installation is complete now and the software will be started when you click the Finish button. 4/25

5 2.2 Installing Hardware In order to use and view the recorded material on PC, you will need to install one of following installation. - HDD Rack Frame Installation - Using IEEE-1394 External HDD unit installation - Using USB 2.0 External HDD unit installation Each option requires optional items. Please read the below descriptions and choose one of following option Using Hard Rack Frame This option is recommended for users who use Removable drive. You need to make sure that your PC has an empty slot to install HDD rack frame. To use this option, user needs HDD Rack Frame. In order to view the image on the PC conveniently, user can install the HDD rack frame in the PC. By doing this, you can directly insert the removable HDD to the PC. No need to take the PC case off every time. 1. Unplug all the cables that connected to PC. Take off four or six screws at the back and push and slide the top case backward as shown on below picture. The method to take the top case off is different for each case. 2. When you open the case, you will find the empty slot to install extra HDD Rack frame or CD Rom. The empty slot is located in different position. 3. Right above or below of CD Rom, you will find an empty slot to install HDD rack frame. You will have to install the rack frame in that position. You need to adjust the jumper setting for Rack frame as well as installed CD Rom. The CD Rom that was already installed in PC should be set as MASTER mode. And you need to set it as SLAVE mode and set MASTER mode for the rack frame. Take off the 40-Pin and power cable of CD Rom and change the jumper mode. The below picture is where you set jumper mode. 5/25

6 4. When you set the jumper mode for CD Rom (SLAVE MODE) and Rack Frame (MASTER MODE), you need to insert the rack frame as below picture. Ever if you change the jumper mode, you can use the CD Rom just like you used to. 5. Connect the 40-Pin Cable and power cable as shown on below picture. Check the jumper mode once again. 6. Tighten two screws each on both sides to secure the rack frame. 7. Rack frame installation is now done. 8. As shown on below picture, insert the HDD and lock the case. If you do not lock the case, the PC will not detect the HDD. Once you start the system, the OS will automatically detect the HDD. And please do not insert or take out the HDD when the PC is on. 9. HDD installation is complete. Turn on the power and run DVR Reader (double click on Dvr_Reader.exe). See the next chapter for information on how to use the program. 6/25

7 2.2.2 Installing IEEE-1394 Card Installing IEEE-1394 card is essential if you want to use 4 or 8 slot external IEEE-1394 drive. Main PC must have the IEEE-1394 Interface Card to install External HDD Rack Case. You need an IEEE 1394 Interface card for installation. 1. Open the top case of PC. Unplug all the cables (Mouse cable, Keyboard cable, etc) that connected to PC. Take off four or six screws at the back and push and slide the top case backward as shown on below picture. Method may be different depends on which cases you are using. 2. Insert the IEEE1394 to empty slot on the main board. 3. Tighten up the screw as shown on the below picture. 7/25

8 4. Put the case back on and connect all the cables that had been connected with PC. - Microsoft Windows 2000 or latest version of OS will automatically detect the IEEE 1394 card. If the PC asks you to install the IEEE 1394 Driver, please install the Driver before you use. 8/25

9 2.2.3 Installing External HDD Rack Case After installing IEEE-1394 card, you need to install the Rack Case. Rack Case is needed to play many Hard Disk Drives at once. Also, it helps users to use software more easily. At the time of writing, Rack Cases are available with single bay, 2 bays, 4 bays and 8 bays. You will need following items to continue the Rack Case installation; - Rack case (Single Bay, 2 Bays, 4 Bays or 8 Bays) - IEEE 6: Cable X 2 or X4 - Power Cable NOTE If you want to use 8 bays Rack Case, you need to install two IEEE-1394 Interface Cards To use this option, user needs following items. IEEE 1394 Interface Card - Select one of right external hard disk drives. Each drives has different number of slots. Single, 2, 4 and 8 slots are available. Cable for installation - IEEE 6: cable and power cable is needed for installation Please follow the below instructions to install the Rack Case. 1. Connect IEEE 6: Cable to empty slot on IEEE 1394 Card. Most of IEEE 1394 card has three slots. You can plug into any of empty slots. 2. Connect the other ends to a connector on rear of external drive. 9/25

10 3. Connect power cord as shown on below diagram. 4. HDD installation is complete. Turn on your PC and external HDD drive. IEEE-1394 Card and external HDD rack case is now installed. You just need to take out the HDD from DVR and put it into a slot on Rack Case. Please follow the instructions. 5. Unlock the removable HDD rack with key provided with DVR. If it is Mini DVR, take out the HDD and place the HDD into Removable HDD rack. 6. Lift up the handle and take out removable HDD from the DVR. 7. Insert the HDD rack into external HDD drive. 8. Run DVR Reader (double click on Dvr_Reader.exe icon). Software will detect the HDD automatically. See the next chapter for information on how to us the program Installing USB 1.0 External HDD Drive You will need following optional items to install USB external hard disk drive. Make sure you possess all the necessary items before continue. USB External HDD Drive: External HDD Drive for easy installation of HDD Cable for installation IEEE 6: cable and power cable is needed for installation 10/25

11 1. Unlock the removable HDD rack with key provided with DVR. If it is Mini DVR, take out the HDD and place the HDD into Removable HDD rack. 2. Lift up the handle and take out removable HDD from the DVR. 3. Insert the HDD rack into USB external HDD drive. Otherwise you can insert the HDD later. 4. Lock the removable HDD rack with the key provided with USB external HDD rack set. 5. Plug USB Cable to the connector on the rear panel of USB external HDD drive. 6. Connect the power cord. 7. Plug the cable to USB port on PC. 8. HDD installation is complete. Turn on your PC and external HDD drive. 9. Run DVR Reader (double click on Dvr_Reader.exe icon). Software will detect the HDD automatically. See the next chapter for information on how to us the program. 11/25

12 3. Operation OPERATION 3.1 Program and controlling buttons DVR Reader is to read the data from recorded HDD of the DVR. Users can search, print, zoom and save with the software. Below is the main frame of the software. Figure 1(Program and Controlling Buttons) When you install the HDD from DVR to your PC as instructed above and run DVR Reader, then the software automatically recognize the HDD and replay as figure 1. 12/25

13 3.2 Screen Information & OSD Hide Screen information is shown as above for each channel; Play and Search Speed: A sign >> means forward playing and << means backward playing. Search and play speed is from 1X to 10,000X. The value will increase by pressing Fast Forward or Backward buttons. Please refer to chapter 4 Playing for more information. Date and time of current image: This will show you the date and time of the image showing. Current position in HDD: This will show you where the viewing image is in HDD by percentage. First Record Time: This will show you when DVR starts the recording. Last Record Time: This will show you when DVR ends the recording. Camera Name: This will show you the camera name. You can change the name in Camera Setup in SETUP menu in DVR main menu. To hide all the screen information above, press the buttons on the right of DVR Reader. Please read below OSD 1: Hide or appear the screen information of Ch 1. OSD 2: Hide or appear the screen information of Ch 2. OSD 3: Hide or appear the screen information of Ch 3. OSD 4: Hide or appear the screen information of Ch 4. OSD A: Hide or appear the screen information of all four channels. 13/25

14 3.3 Playback Control Figure 1(Operating buttons) Figure 2(Search Speed) Figure 1 is an enlargement of buttons on the bottom of program. The buttons have same functions as a normal VCR. Function of each buttons is as follows. BEGINNING POSITION: Press this button to move to beginning position of recorded image. REWIND: This button is to rewind the image. The maximum speed is 10,000 times and the speed will be increased twice faster each time when you click the button. (2X 4X 8X) * Figure 2 is an enlargement of searching speed. Searching speed is written on left bottom corner of program. BACKWARD PLAY: Press this button to play backward. STOP: This button will pause the screen. Press again to restart the playback. PLAY: Press this button to play forward. FAST FORWARD: The maximum speed is 10,000 times as like Rewind button and the speed will be increased twice faster each time when you click the button. Press Play button to go back to normal speed. (2X 4X 8X) END: Press this button to go to last position of recorded image. 3.4 Audio Playback Note Audio playback is only available with the DVR with audio card. If the DVR recorded the audio, the DVR Reader will play the audio with video files. The audio recorded channel is marked in red color on channel selection buttons. DVR Reader will play the audio if the user selects the quad or audio recorded channel. 14/25

15 3.5 Channel Selection Figure 1(Ch1 selected) Figure 2 (Channel selection button) Figure 3(FULL SCREEN MODE) To watch one channel, click the desired channel image or click the channel selection button on left bottom corner of the program. When you select the channel, you will see the orange border around selected channel. Other three unselected channels will be paused. A selected channel viewing speed will be faster than normal speed, more like real-time playback speed. To view the selected channel in full screen mode (figure 3), double click on selected channel image. 3.6 Frame by Frame Figure 1(Ch1 selected) Figure 2 (Move by frame) Move by Frame: This button is to play image by frame. Put the no of frame and press I button, then each time you click the button, the image will move frame by frame. If you put 1 in the box and click the I button, the program will bring the image by 1 frame. 15/25

16 4. Save Save 4.1 Save Figure 1(Buttons) Figure 2 (Activated buttons) You can either save the image in AVI file format or BMP file format. Saving feature is one of the main objectives of this program. You can save in three different formats. First one is the BMP file format and second one is AVI file format. And third file saving method is invented by our company and it s called KPEG. Please read and follow the below instructions to save in one of three formats Save in BMP Format To save the image in BMP format, you have to select one channel. You cannot save quad image. When you select the channel, SAVE buttons will be activated as shown on Figure 2. Click SAVE BMP button, then diagram 4 appears on the monitor. Name of file is in DVRYYMMDDMMSS time format. The location of file is saved folder in a folder where you installed the DVR Reader. Follow the below instruction to save the image in BMP file format. 1. Select the channel by clicking the image or click the Channel Select button on left bottom corner of the program. When you click the image that you want to save, you will see the orange border around the image. 2. Save button will be activated when you select the channel. When you see the image that you want to save, press the PAUSE button. And using the Move by Frame button, find the image that you want to save. And then, click the Save BMP button. 16/25

17 3. Default file name is DVRYYMMDDMMSS. And saving BMP file will create a folder called saved in a folder where you installed the DVR Reader. You can change the file name or directory. 4. Click Save button to save the image in BMP file format. The file will be saved in a selected folder. 17/25

18 4.1.2 Save in AVI Format To save the images in AVI format, you have to set the image block that you want to save. Select the desired channel and play the channel. And when you see the image that you want to save, click SELECTED BLOCK SET button then you will see the tiny arrow (Yellow Mark on Figure 1) on the bar. And click the button again to select the block. When the block selected, then SAVE AVI button will be activated as shown on Figure 3. Click SAVE AVI button. Type file name and locate the directory and press SAVE button. Please follow the instruction below. 1. Select the channel by clicking the image or click the Channel Select button on left bottom corner of the program. 2. SELECTED BLOCK SET button will be activated when you select the channel. Click SELECTED BLOCK SET button to set the starting position. 3. Press the SELECTED BLOCK SET button again to set the last position of AVI file. When you set the block, the program will automatically play from the starting position of the block. 18/25

19 4. Click SAVE AVI button. Default file name is DVRYYMMDDMMSS. And saving AVI file will create a folder called SAVED in a folder where you installed the DVR Reader. You can change the file name or directory. And you need to select the CODEC. Depends on what CODEC you use, the file size may vary dramatically. We recommend to use Microsoft Video 1 and to set the quality of the CODEC as 75. Video 1 Codec is the standard Codec that every Windows based PC has. NOTE In order to save the video in AVI file format, user must select file type. 5. Click Save button to save the image in AVI file format. 6. Saving in AVI file format is now done. Go to the folder where you saved the AVI file. Saving in AVI file may take a while and time taking to save the AVI file may vary depends on your PC configuration. And Save option is only available when you select one desired channel. NOTE Saving in AVI file may take a while and time taking to save the AVI file may vary depends on your PC configuration. 20 4.1.3 KPEG Saving New KPEG file format is the new software with the size of 10% in AVI file size and you can also reduce the time to save the file. However you must use KpegPlayer.exe to play the KPEG files. Please follow the below instruction to save in KPEG file format. 1. Select a channel that user wants to save. And select the saving area by clicking l-l button. 2. When you select the area, SAVE button will be activated. 3. Click SAVE button and the below window will appear on the screen. User can select one of two different file type, KPEG or AVI. Select the file format and directory, and enter SAVE button to save the file. NOTE Size of KPEG file is 10% of existing AVI file and you can reduce the time to save the file. 20/25

21 4. Saving is now done. You can play the AVI file with any of Media Player Software and to play KEPG file, you must have KEPG Player. 5. KPEG file is located in a folder that user have selected. 6. Run the KpegPlayer.exe and play the KPEG files. Operating method is same as DVR Reader and if you want to copy the KPEG file to a CD and play it in other place, you must copy KpegPlayer.exe and KPEG.dll. 21/25

22 4.1.4 KPEG Player New KPEG file format can only be played with KPEG Player. However KPEG format size is only 10% of AVI file and time and time to save in KPEG file is shorter than AVI file format (5~10% of AVI file saving time) 1. KPEG Player is located where user has installed the DVR Reader program. The default location of the program is C:\Program Files \DVR_Reader. 2. Below is the main viewer of KPEG Player. The operating method is exactly same as DVR Reader. 3. Click the REJECT button to select a file. 4. Select KPEG file to play. And click OPEN button. 22/25

Controlling buttons work same as DVR Reader File Saving Status Bar During the state of file saving process following file saving status bar will appear to demonstrate on the development on the file saving. The process of file saving is same as above file saving method. 23/25

24 5. Miscellaneous Functions 5.1 Print Figure 1 (Print & Log button) To print the image, you must select a channel. Follow the below instruction to print the image. 1. Select the channel by clicking the image or click the Channel Select button on left bottom corner of the program. 2. Print button will be activated when you select the channel. Press the Print button. 3. Select a printer and click OK to print the image. 24/25

25 5.2 Event Log and search To view the event log, click the Event Log button. And to do event search, click the event that user wants to see. Then, the program will start playback from the event that user has selected. 5.3 Miscellaneous Function Figure 1(Zoom In/Out) Figure 2(Exit) - Zoom In/Out: Select the channel that you want to zoom in or out and press Zoom In/Out button. Only available when user selects a channel. - Exit: Press this button to exit the program. 25/25
