3 Choose with Care This one day workshop provides participants with vital knowledge and skills to build a child safe organisation and environment through the development and implementation of child protection policies, codes of conduct, child safe recruitment and selection practices, and managing complaints and concerns of abuse. This workshop contributes to any organisations aims to meet their duty of care obligations to provide a child safe environment. Managers, HR staff, frontline staff or anyone in a position of creating policies and recruiting staff e.g.: residential care, foster care recruitment, mentoring programs, volunteer programs should attend this training. This workshop is extremely popular with organisations, schools and governments working with children and young people. This training program can be delivered on-site or off-site and can be tailored to meet individual needs. SPEAKUP Understanding Child Abuse and your Response This training provides a greater awareness of child abuse and the prevalence of this epidemic within communities. The training also focuses on how to recognise and manage the behavioural indicators of child abuse in children. This half day training program is delivered to parents, carers, childcare workers and anyone who works with or has contact with children. 4 Wise Child Personal Safety Training Program Disability and Special Needs PRIMARY SCHOOL This one day workshop will train Wise Child is a whole of school participants to deliver the Wise Child approach to providing children Program to primary school aged and young people with practical children and themes that can be empowerment and a resilience program introduced from as young as three. which provides a comprehensive approach to educating children and young people. The training enables teachers, parents and carers to assist children in identifying situations where they feel safe in order to differentiate when they feel unsafe and know how to seek assistance from trusted people. Children with a disability are heavily over represented in child abuse statistics. They are amongst the most vulnerable people in our community and the risk of them being the target of abusive behaviours is extremely high. The Wise Child Disability and Special Needs program, educates children and young people to identify situations where they feel safe in order to differentiate when they feel unsafe and know how to seek assistance from trusted people. Networks of trusted people are developed to ensure there are a range of people that the child feels they can ask for help. This training also assists adults to become more aware of motivations of sex offenders and working with non-verbal children. 5 SECONDARY SCHOOL The aim of this personal safety training is to teach children and young people how to be more resilient, to identify and avoid risk, to build safety networks and to tell someone if anyone is harming them. This educational and empowerment program is especially effective when teaching young people how to deal with abuse, bullying, cyber safety, and generally keeping safe. This training is aimed at schools, camps, youth services, mentoring programs, sporting organisations etc. or anyone working with young people. There is also a two day Train the Trainer Workshop available for all Wise Child Programs aimed at teachers who wish to educate others on how to deliver these programs to children and young people. Child Wise has also recently developed a Wise Child Out of Home Care training program for foster care and residential workers. All training programs can be delivered on-site or off-site and can be tailored to meet individual needs. Professional Boundaries Professional boundaries are essential in maintaining safe and appropriate relationships between professional staff/ volunteers and children. The establishment of professional boundaries provides a context in which roles and responsibilities are defined; i.e. where a person s role is to begin and end. Professional boundaries can easily be vague and the impact this can have on the professional relationship, the child and outcome for the program can be quite detrimental. This one day training is aimed at professionals such as teachers, youth workers and child care staff and examines particular codes of conduct and explores why we should have them and what they should look like. Learning outcomes include: the importance of a code of conduct; developing a code of conduct; items to be included; community education; and professional boundaries. 6 7

6 Cybersafety This half day personal safety program focuses on Internet and mobile phone use. It gives practical advice on how to assist children and young people to keep safe online. Topics include cybersafety rules, cyber bullying and safe use on the Internet. The program discusses risk management strategies for instant messaging, social networking, unwanted sexual contact and the Dynamics of Sex Offending This one day training examines the dynamics of how sex offenders operate and the kind of strategies they use to get close to children (grooming) in order to abuse them. It teaches people how offenders become offenders and how they justify their actions through their distorted thinking. The training includes profiling the behaviour of offenders; theories of offending; grooming techniques; cycle of offending; recidivism; and child pornographers. This training also explores the use of the Internet by predators, how to keep children safe, and how to identify grooming strategies used by offenders both in the real and cyber world. This training program can be delivered on-site or off-site and can be tailored to meet individual needs. growing issue of sexting. Supporting Adolescents with Sexualised Behaviours This innovative program is a one day introductory course on adolescent sexual offending. It focuses on understanding, assessing and managing adolescent sexual offenders. This training provides staff with a greater understanding and assists in strategies and requirements to take the most appropriate action in any given situation. This training program is aimed at both residential care managers and frontline staff who would like an introduction to understanding adolescent sexual offending. The training is conducted from theoretical, experiential and practical frameworks and is applicable to daily practice. This workshop provides teachers, youth workers etc with practical strategies on how to work with children who display sexualised behaviours, an issue that is becoming more prevalent in society today. Many child and youth focused workers are not trained in how to identify concerning sexualised behaviour in children. Often they ignore this as being acting out behaviour but in actual fact they may be dealing with being harmed / harming others. This training provides workers with strategies on how to respond and deal with these behaviours. 8 9

7 Trauma and Basic Counselling Skills This one / two day training program (depending on content) teaches people who have not been trained in counselling, basic counselling and engagement skills to work with children, especially those children who have been victims of abuse and or trauma. This training program can be delivered on or off-site and can be tailored to meet organisations needs. Behaviour Management Strategies This one day training teaches participants how to work with children with difficult and challenging behaviours particularly those that have been exposed to abuse and/ or neglect. The training provides people with a range of practical strategies on how to understand the behaviour and how to best support the change in the child and/or redirect this behaviour so they can become a positive member of the group or class. This training program can be delivered on or off-site and can be tailored to meet organisations needs. Tailor made training on all aspects of Child Abuse TraintheTrainer (TOT) All of our trainings can be delivered as a train the trainer program, usually requiring two days. Many organisations nominate their staff to undertake this training in order to deliver child protection training sessions to their own staff, clients or the broader community. Often organisations, governments, schools etc. request tailored training to meet their specific needs. This may incorporate parts of our various training programs in a specific context. We discuss their training needs and collaboratively build a program that will incorporate the required information to receive the most relevant support. 8 Indigenous Community Training Programs Child Wise has been working with indigenous communities for over 10 years on a community centred approach to preventing child abuse. Child Wise partners with a variety of organisations to deliver a communitybased, educational and culturally relevant approach to preventing child abuse in indigenous communities. Our indigenous training differs from other organisations because it focuses on empowering, educating and supporting communities to take responsibility for protecting their children from abuse. Child Wise assesses the individual needs of communities and tailors our training programs to deliver the most effective personal safety strategies for that community. In partnership with indigenous communities, Child Wise has also produced culturally relevant posters and booklets on understanding and responding to child abuse. Therefore, any of the training programs listed in this booklet can be adapted to indigenous communities as requested. Implementing Child Protection within International Development Programs The overall aim of this training is to implement a zero tolerance approach to all forms of child abuse within international development and aid programs. This training provides a clear understanding of how to implement child protection strategies in all overseas aid programs. It will help organisations enhance their approach to child protection through risk assessment and risk management policies and procedures, outlining child safe recruitment and selection strategies, and outline clear procedures for raising concerns about child abuse. Additionally, the training will cover how the organisation will ensure that it is compliant with AusAID s Child Protection Policy as well as how to help your overseas partners become compliant with these obligations. Child Wise are the recognised experts in the field of child safe organisations and wrote the AusAID Child Protection Policy. Our Child Protection consultancy services include: Child protection audits Development of policies and procedures As a not-for-profit organisation, Child Wise keeps our consultancy fees to a minimum to ensure that each organisation no matter what size, can create child safe environments. Child Protection Training for Hotel Child Care Services This one day training is delivered to hotel staff, both managers and frontline workers in kids clubs and babysitting services. It teaches the managers how to ensure that the staff they employ to work in their child care services are safe as well as how to develop policies and procedures for hotel staff. Training includes how to keep children safe, understanding child abuse, behaviour management strategies, working with children with special needs and managing complaints/concerns about a child or other staff in relation to child protection issues. This training has been delivered to all 5 star hotels in Bali and Fiji after incidents of abuse were reported in these services. Child Wise has received multiple requests from hotels around the world for this training

10 Development of Policies and Procedures If your organisation works with children, our Policy and Procedure Development service involves meeting with staff from your organisation to determine what should be included in your Child Protection or Child Safety Policy. A first draft of a policy is prepared by Child Wise for your feedback. A final policy is then developed. Child Wise can also assist with implementation of the Policy, and staff and volunteer training as part of this process. For organisations with an existing Child Protection Policy, Child Wise can provide a review on this and will subsequently provide recommendations for you. Child Protection Risk Management Strategies Organisations have a moral and legal responsibility to ensure that children are safe in their care. Child abuse is preventable. Once your organisation is aware of how and why child abuse occurs you need to consider the risks to children in your organisation and programs. Risk management is child abuse prevention. Only by identifying risks can you develop strategies to prevent child abuse. Child Wise can help you identify risks and develop and implement effective prevention strategies to minimise the risk of child abuse. Child Protection Audits A Child Protection Audit typically involves a number of visits to your organisation to meet with staff, volunteers, parents and children and young people. Existing documentation will be reviewed and an analysis of child safe practices and procedures is conducted. A report is provided by Child Wise to your organisation which details this analysis and outlines recommendations for the development and implementation of further policies and practices with the aim to strengthen and maintain a child safe environment at your organisation. This service is ideal for schools, child care, children s services, sporting groups, community and neighbourhood activities, school holiday programs, camps, and after school care. Child Safe Recruitment and Selection of Staff While Child Wise can provide advice on recruitment and selection of staff we also offer our Child Safe Recruitment Service. This service has been developed based on international models of best practice for Human Resources and safe staff and volunteer recruitment. The Child Wise, Child Safe Recruitment Specialists will develop your position descriptions and manage your advertising campaign, screen and process your applications, conduct interviews for positions which may include group sessions, and undertake your reference checks to assess the applicant s background. Individualised Training and Guidance on Child Protection All organisations have different needs and structures. We can provide specialist training and guidance based on your child protection needs. Crisis Management / Critical Incident Debriefing Our child protection staff are specialised in the area of counselling and debriefing.
