1 Classroom Rules and Procedures Spanish 3-4 Fitzgerald Course Goals: Learning a language can be challenging yet rewarding. In Spanish 3-4 we work to improve students knowledge and comprehension of Spanish through activities focused on speaking, listening, reading and writing. Additionally, we will study cultural highlights of various Spanish speaking countries such as Spain, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Costa Rica. Finally, special emphasis is put on preparation for the district speaking assessment given in April. Classroom Policies: Fitz s rules to live by. RESPECT must be shown at all times to a. Classmates b. Property Do not touch it if it s not yours. You must let me know immediately if the book assigned to your desk is missing or if there is writing on your desk.. Otherwise, you will be held liable. c. Instructor d. Yourself My classroom policies and procedures are in place because I strive to create a comfortable and friendly environment for the students because learning a foreign language can be daunting. Therefore, I want all students to feel safe taking the steps necessary to master something entirely new to them. Sweeps: A sweep occurs when you are not entirely in the door at the completion of the final bell not running towards it. You will still be responsible for whatever you miss while going to check in at the attendance office. That work is not excused. Materials: The following materials will be required in class each day: 1. Loose leaf paper spiral is not accepted! 2. A writing utensil pencil, blue or black ink. Please no other colored pens. 3. A 3-ring binder with 5 dividers. All work completed in and for class will be kept in your notebook. This notebook will be part of your grade. 4. Highlighters and colored pencils are recommended. 5. An agenda or calendar of some sort is highly recommended. I will do my best to allow time at the end of the hour to write down the homework each day before leaving. This is what successful students do. Late Work: Homework may be turned in up to one day late for half credit. I must see it before class starts the next day or I will not accept it. You can show me your half-credit immediately after class, after school or before school the next day; you may NOT interrupt my class to do so. Sprays: Under no circumstances should you at any time spray or use any perfume, scented lotion, body spray, etc. in my classroom.
2 Absences: I will keep a log with daily work, handouts, homework and quizzes. It is your responsibility to check this the day of your return. It is also your responsibility to take care of what you missed. The handouts will be in your class folder. Homework should be turned in as soon as possible, but no later than four days from your return. Quizzes and exams should be made up as soon as possible but preferably within four school days. I will not remind you. I will be happy to answer questions before or after class not during class. Quizzes: The purpose of a quiz is to assess a student s mastery of the content prior to a unit exam. These can be re-taken after the student has sought help from the teacher or a peer and has demonstrated at least 15 minutes of study time. This can be done with the teacher or a parent can sign off that it has occurred. Any re-takes must be done during office hours and prior to the unit exam. Tests: Unit exams (both written and spoken) are given at the end of a unit and are made up of the material in the quizzes. These tests can NOT be re-taken. This policy is department wide. It is, therefore, the student s responsibility to take the steps necessary to ensure success. Validity: All work and exams must be your own. Plagiarism is considered to be the use of another s work and try to use it as his/her own. This includes but is not limited to use of another student s homework answers, looking at another student s test/quiz for answers, using Google.translate or any other work taken from the internet. The student handbook will be used as a guide for consequences. Passes: You will receive one pass per quarter to be used at your discretion. Use this wisely. If you need to leave class and have already used your pass, lost it or left it at home, you will owe me ten minutes after school. Any passes which go unused may be used for bonus points at the end of the semester. Consequences: Should a student choose to not be a cooperative part of my learning system, he/she will first be required to spend a 30 minute detention with me after school. If the student does not serve the required time within a two-day period, the time will be doubled. If after that, the student still has not served the required time, a formal detention will be submitted to the attendance office and they will take over from that point. Furthermore, if inappropriate behavior is repeated, Thunderbird s 6-step process will be followed which may result in removal from the class. Grading Breakdown: District grading scale will be used. Grades are NOT rounded up. Homework 10% Unit Assessments 40% Participation 10% Final Exam 20% Quizzes/Exams 20% *2 nd semester s final will primarily be the PBA given in April. 3 Foreign Language Department Information Spanish 3-4 is a further expansion of the four elements of mastering the Spanish language: speaking, listening writing and reading. The student will have the opportunity to learn and review the essential grammatical components of the language and to utilize them in both reinforced and spontaneous situations. Additionally, the culture of the Spanish speaking countries will be highlighted and discussed. Finally, special emphasis on preparation for the district assessment will be given. 1. Citizenship: Students whose behavior interferes with the learning process or with the teaching process or is caught plagiarizing work will risk a U in citizenship. This includes behavior with a substitute teacher. Absolutely no explanations or rationalizations can justify misbehavior for a substitute teacher; these guest teachers warrant as much respect as the daily classroom teacher. 2. Hats will not be worn in the classroom. 3. Homework is a requirement. Students must complete all of the work and turn it in when it is requested. 4. Tests and quizzes will be administered frequently. Pop quizzes will be given from time to time. Be prepared. 5. Unit assessments are heavily weighted. These assessments evaluate a student s performance and comprise 40% of the student s grade. Department policy is that NO student will be allowed to retake a unit assessment unless they are absent in which case the student will have five days from the time they return to take the test (usually during an EOP). 6. Extra help and/or tutoring are available. There are several professional tutors that can be recommended, there is peer tutoring, and I will be available before and after school frequently. 7. Daily Study---It is expected that you study, study, study!!! I would like at least 20 minutes of study-time set aside every day/night so that you are in the habit of constant review of the Spanish vocabulary and verbs. 8. EOP---May be assigned from time to time. You may be assigned EOP because the teacher feels that you need extra practice and/or study time. Please remember that EOP is not necessarily just for make-up work. This is also a chance for extra practice and/or related work so that you may better your grammar concepts. EOP is not a private tutoring session. There will be days when the teacher may not be able to provide one-on-one instruction. Remember to make an appointment for before or after school help when needed. Test-taking and grading procedures GRADING PLAGIARISM POSSESSION When grading the work of another student, accuracy is essential. Failure to grade accurately will be considered a violation of grading procedures and could result in the grader receiving a 0. Students who have difficulty grading another student s paper just need to speak to me. The presentation of someone else s work as your own is unacceptable and will result in severe consequences, including a 0 on the test or assignment. Having the work of another student is unacceptable and will be considered cheating and dealt with accordingly. IN CLASS TESTING: 1. All papers, notebooks, foreign language books, translators, and other materials must be stored away. 2. No talking, whispering, communicating with other students while any test materials are being distributed. 3. No passing of anything of any kind. 4. Student s eyes must be on his/her own work at all times. Students might consider covering the answers with a hand or with paper provided by the teacher. 5. If a student has a question, (s)he should raise his/her hand and wait until the teacher comes to the student. 6. Remain quiet until all tests have been completed. RETAKES You will be allowed to retake quizzes only if you have turned in all of your homework
4 leading up to that quiz (demonstrating effort prior to the quiz) and you have filled out the retake checklist. Retakes will only occur during EOP or an agreed upon time before of after school. HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS: Homework offers students the opportunity for practice and for the refinement of skills. The work done and submitted by students should reflect the individual student s work and not that of another. It is very possible that students may discuss homework outside of class; however, students are asked not to share answers but rather to share the process of arriving at the answer. 5 It is a privilege for you to be in this elective class to help you develop and refine your second language skills required by all universities. The Glendale Union High School District and Thunderbird teachers have invested a great deal of time and effort to develop a program which will help you achieve and succeed. The foreign language teachers will enforce a strict rule of behavior and conduct not only to ensure a positive learning environment but also to maintain the equipment. I agree to obey the following rules: 1. I will only use the tape recorders and/or the headphones in the respectful manner as directed by my teachers. 2. I will respectfully use the books in the classroom by not writing on them, bending them, nor destroying them in any way. 3. I will not write on classroom desks and tables. 4. I will not touch another student, or that individual s personal items such as backpack, notebook, etc. 5. I shall not intrude into the space of another student. 6. In class, I shall sit respectfully in the desks. 7. I will come to class on time every day. 8. I will always come to class prepared with my completed school work and the needed school supplies. 9. I will move quickly and quietly into and through the classroom. 10. I will treat my peers respectfully. 11. I will never engage in plagiarism nor behave unethically by cheating. 12. I will cooperate with my teacher and treat her respectfully. 13. I will cooperate with any substitute teacher and treat that individual respectfully. 14. I shall take full advantage of the classroom experience I am given and will perform to my best ability. 15. I will always follow the dress code. 16. I will not use electronic devices in the classroom. 17. I will not wear a hat in class. 18. I will not eat, drink (besides water), nor chew gum in the Spanish classroom. I know that if I follow these rules, I will greatly improve my language skills and will enhance my ability to succeed at Thunderbird High School.
