4 I. Decision of War 1809 James Madison elected president. Tension between U.S. and Britain were rising and Madison decides about war. Economic pressure-reopen trade with both Britain and France. Mr. Madison s War War Hawks-from South who voted for war. 4

6 II. Tecumseh and Tippecanoe Tecumseh-Shawnee leader, believed Native Americans needed to unite to protect their land. Prophet-his brother wanted traditional Native American way of life. When became more militant William Henry Harrison, governor of Indiana territory prepared to stamp it out. Battle of Tippecanoe-shattered Native Americans-many fled to Canada. 6

8 III. Declaring War Tecumseh s flight to Canada seemed to prove British were helping Native Americans. Madison asked Congress to declare war. In Congress- South and West voted for war and the Northeast did not. 8

18 VI. Treaty of Ghent Ended the War of Restored prewar boundaries. Increase nation s prestige overseas and new spirit of patriotism and national unity. Later in 1818 set border of U.S. and Canada from Minnesota to Rocky Mts. at 49 north latitude and claim jointly the Oregon Country. 18
