Living Collection: Four Seasons Season Trees Grade Level: PreK Materials: Cotton Swabs Washable Ink Pads Paper Precut Trees Glue About the Project: Students will learn about trees growing at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens and will discuss what happens to the leaves of a tree in all four seasons. Students will read the book Tree by Britta Teckentrup and will answer questions about the text and images. For their artwork, students will glue four precut trees to a long sheet of paper to represent the four seasons. They will use ink pads and cotton swabs to add leaves to their trees, changing colors for each season. For Spring, students will use light green and pink dots to represent budding leaves. For summer, green leaves will be added. For fall, red, orange, and yellow leaves will be used. Finally, students can use white ink to add snow to their winter season. This project will focus on fine motor skills as well as observing nature and discussing traits of living things. Developmental Standards: With eagerness and curiosity actively engage in play as means of exploration and learning Approach tasks and activities with flexibility and inventiveness Actively engage in problem solving Demonstrate persistence Understand and follow rules and routines Sensorimotor-Use senses to assist & guide learning; using sensory information to plan & carry out movements PD.PK.1. Compare/contrast and describe different sights, smells, sounds, tastes, and textures found in the environment. Fine Motor-Demonstrate eye-hand coordination and dexterity needed to manipulate objects 1
PD.PK.5. Experiment with handheld tools to develop strength, control, and dexterity of small muscles (e.g., paintbrushes, crayons, markers, and a variety of technological tools). PD.PK.6. Explore and engage in activities which enhance hand-eye coordination (e.g., building with blocks, creating with clay, putting puzzles together, and using other manipulatives). Inspired by: American Elm 2
Living Collection: Elm Tree Embossed Elm Leaves Grade Level: K-2 Materials: Aluminum Plastic Embossing Tools Paper Pencils Sharpies About Elm Trees: The American Elm was once one of America's most prevalent trees. While there are still elms in our area, the Dutch Elm Disease has greatly reduced their numbers. Dutch Elm Disease is a fungal disease that is spread by beetles. At the Dixon, our elm tree (nicknamed Elmer the Elm) gets an injection every year to prevent this illness. Elm trees are very large trees, they can grow up to 100 feet tall and have a four foot trunk! They grow quickly and can reach their full height in about 40 years. Elms have small leaves; the leaves range from one to six inches with a serrated edge. These leaves usually turn yellow in the fall. Because of their size and many leaves, elms are often sought out by birds for nest sites. Elm trees produce small fruit and flowers that birds, squirrels, and other small animals eat. About the Project: Students will learn about the American Elm tree and will be shown images of different elm trees and their leaves. They will learn about the elm tree's traits and history. Students will then use this information as inspiration to make their own embossed leaves. Students will study elm leaves and make a detailed drawing on paper. Once their drawings are completed, students will tape the paper to a small piece of aluminum and will transfer the drawing onto the metal using plastic carving tools. Once their drawing has been transferred, students will use sharpies to draw a decorative border along the edge of their aluminum. Academic Standards: Visual Arts: 1.1 Demonstrate developmentally appropriate use of tools and media (e.g., scissors, glue, pencils, markers, crayons, paint brushes, paint, paper). Use tools in a safe and responsible manner. 1.2 Paint, glue, cut, sculpt, draw, collage, and print at a developmentally appropriate level. Use appropriate vocabulary to describe a technique. 1.3 Demonstrate developmentally appropriate knowledge of art processes (e.g., painting, printing, mixed media.) 1.4 Produce artwork with developmentally appropriate levels of craftsmanship. Identify levels of craftsmanship in artwork. 3
4.1 Understand that art comes from different cultures, times, and places. Science: GLE Recognize that living things have parts that work together. GLE Distinguish between living and non-living things in an environment. GLE Recognize that plants and animals are living things that grow and change over time. GLE Recognize that some organisms which formerly lived are no longer found on earth. Inspired by: 4
Living Collection: Elm Tree Tree Weavings Grade Level: 3-5 Materials: Paper Plates Yarn Permanent markers About Elm Trees: The American Elm was once one of America's most prevalent trees. About the Project: Students will learn about the American Elm tree and will be shown images of different elm trees. They will learn about the elm tree's traits and history. Students will then use this information as inspiration to make their own elm tree weaving. Brown yarn will be used on a notched paper plate to wrap the yarn around the plate and create a tree trunk and branches. They will also use permanent markers to add leaves, grass, and flowers to their projects. Academic Standards: Visual Arts: 1.1 Demonstrate developmentally-appropriate use of tools (e.g., drawing implements, painting implements, sculpting implements, printmaking implements, and technological sources). Demonstrate developmentally-appropriate care for tools and work space. Demonstrate safe use of tools in making art. 1.2 Demonstrate developmentally-appropriate use of media (e.g., drawing, painting, sculpting, printmaking and technology). 1.3 Demonstrate developmentally-appropriate proficiency in a variety of techniques (e.g., cutting, pasting, assemblage, mixing color, contouring, working with form, mark-making techniques, working with color theory, color schemes, painting wet into wet, book-making, printmaking, mixing 5

About the Project: Students will learn about the American Elm tree and will be shown images of different elm trees and their leaves. They will learn about the elm tree's traits and history. Students will then use this information as inspiration to make their own embossed trees. Middle school students will be given a large sheet of aluminum and discuss the different parts of the tree as well as how to identify tree species by studying the leaves. Students will observe elm trees and make a scientific drawing on paper. Once their drawings are completed, students will tape the paper to a piece of aluminum and will transfer the drawing onto the metal using plastic carving tools. Students will paint their piece of aluminum with black paint. Once dry, students will lightly scratch the surface of their metal with sandpaper to give the illusion of a patina. 7
