1 AQUACULTURE TECHNICIAN Program Overview Aquaculture is a young industry, but growing faster than other industries. Salmon farming in British Columbia was started by the federal government in the 1850s. Commercial farming operations first started in Canada in the early 1970s. For the first 15 years of salmon aquaculture, farmers were developing farm methods, suitable species, and best feed usage. Over the past 30 years, the number of farm sites has increased by almost 1,000%. According to the Department of Fisheries & Oceans (DFO), aquaculture in Canada produced in excess of 160,000 tonnes 1 of finfish and shellfish in Projections by the Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance (CAIA) indicate that Canadian aquaculture production could increase to more than 500,000 tonnes 2 in It is estimated that an additional 9,200 jobs will be created directly and indirectly over the next 10 years. Industry employers advise us that they require graduates that have an in-depth knowledge of biology, environment, and facilities in the aquaculture industry. Insignia s Aquaculture Technician program fills an industry need for educated technicians and those interested in broader aquaculture applications. Students will study Ichthyology, Fish Culture, Fish Propagation, Feed & Feeding, Juvenile Rearing, Fish Health Management, Customer Care, Computer Applications and other industry-relevant topics. New and green technologies and processes like Aquaponics, Biosecurity, Animal Care, Organic Farming, and Recirculation Systems will be discussed. This program will familiarize students with the equipment used for handling, transportation, sorting, weighing, netting of fish. They will also be educated on the maintenance of tools, tanks, pumps, and filters. Students will gain experience through practicum placements such as fish farms, fish hatcheries, research, and government run facilities. In any sector of aquaculture work, Aquaculture Technicians with sufficient experience, training, knowledge, and leadership skills may be promoted to supervisory or management positions Canadian Aquaculture Production Statistics (tonnes). eng.htm. Accessed 23 Jan Opportunity for Expansion: Aquaculture in Canada: Canadian Aquaculture Industry Alliance. Accessed 23 Jan 2013 Upon successful completion of this program students receive Aquaculture Technician Diploma First Aid CPR C Certificate WHMIS Certificate WorldHost Certificate Practicum Site Notes Due to affiliation agreements with the Aquaculture business community, students may be required to travel outside of campus city limits to complete the practicum components. Students are advised that capacity limits will dictate the timing of your practicums. Document Control #0350T 2013 Insignia College of Health and Business Page 1 of 6

3 P110 Success Strategies This module orients students to the expectations of college-level study and introduces strategies for success such as time management, goal setting, study skills, utilization of campus resources, critical thinking and note and test taking skills. Students will be expected to demonstrate initiative and take responsibility for their decisions. C115 Computer Skills MS Word Level 1 C130 Computer Skills MS Excel Level 1 and 2 P120 Employment Strategies This is an on-line course. Students will learn how to control all text and graphic elements within Microsoft Word and to create documents for a variety of personal and business tasks. Advanced features of Word will be introduced in order for students to produce professional documents and manage files. This course is part of the MS Office Specialist certification. This is an on-line course. Students will be introduced to the basic commands, functions and capabilities of Microsoft Excel. The course will focus on data input, performance of calculations, how to control text, numeric and graphic elements and how to create charts. This course is part of the MS Office Specialist certification. Students will learn to create professional resumes and cover letters for each position they are applying for. Facilitator will also be available to provide advice on job finding resources, interview skills /techniques and mock interviews. Students learn how to summarize verbally their core curriculum learning and to market their skills effectively. AC110 Ichthyology Students are introduced to Ichthyology, ( ichthyo Latin word for fish and logy Latin word for science and knowledge), which describes the morphology, physiology, taxonomy and ecology of freshwater and marine fishes. Structure, function, evolution behaviour, and anatomy and physiology of fish are all discussed in the framework of adaption to the environment. AC130 AC140 Facility Maintenance Environmental Parameters (Water Quality) Facility maintenance covers two major trends: 1. Handling, transportation, keeping, sorting, weighing, netting, etc. of fish larvae and juveniles in the fish hatchery and farms (and between them). 2. Maintenance of tools, equipment, tanks, electrical parts, filters, etc. The goal of this course is to introduce the effects of environmental or water physio-chemical parameters (abiotic parameters) on fish culture, propagation, and health. 4 AC210 Fish Culture Fish Culture describes the history of aquaculture, important cultured fish species, culture techniques, and methods of fish husbandry in different environmental conditions and water resources. AC220 Shellfish Culture Different aspects of shellfish culture and propagation are explained. Examination of industries that produce cultured shrimps and mussels will be emphasized. AC230 AC240 Recirculating Systems (RAS) Aquaponic Systems This module introduces and discusses in-depth the recirculation aquaculture system. In this course, methods of culture, reuse water, biofiltration, disinfection, nitrification, and denitrification are discussed. Aquaponics is the combination of aquaculture and hydroponics. It is the process of cultivating fish and plants together within a recirculating ecosystem. Once established and properly maintained, an aquaponic system can be almost self-sustaining with very little effort. AC320 Fish Propagation Students will learn different methods of fish propagation in different environment and water sources. Important cultured fish species will be examined. Methods for propagation, keeping brood stock fish, feeding, incubating, and different types of incubators will be described. AC330 Incubation In this course incubation of eggs and different types of incubation and incubators in fresh water and marine fish are explained. AC340 Feed and Feeding Introduction to the nutritional requirements of fishes with an emphasis on fish growth, nutritional deficiencies, and feed formulation. AC350 Aquaculture Industry Economics This modules provides the student with a detailed and specific set of guidelines for using economic and financial analysis in aquaculture production. By discussing key issues such as how to finance and plan a new aquaculture business, how to monitor and evaluate economic performance, and how to manage capital, labour, and business risk, this module equips aquaculture professionals, researchers, and students with important information applicable to a wide range of business decisions. AC360 Live Feed Culture Introduction of live food in aquaculture, types of live food organisms, culture of algae, culture of zooplankton, culture of brine shrimp (Artemia), culture of microorganisms, copepod culture, preservation, and storage of fish food organisms. Also the effects of major and important biotic factors on the behaviour and growth will be discussed. Feeding and Husbandry will be introduced. Broodstock rearing discusses keeping, feeding, stripping, health control, etc. of all male and female fish kept in the fish hatchery to produce new stock for the next production year. Practical aspects of fish health management in relation to commercial (food fish) and resource enhancement aquaculture are covered. Fish health issues in wild/free ranging fish populations. Symptoms, clinical signs, and diagnosis of common fish diseases. Prevention and treatment of non-infectious and infectious diseases of finfish.
