3 katalog E.I.balkan.qxd :38 Stránka 4 INTRODUCTION The theme of this catalogue is the Balkans perception of European Identity. The Czech Council on Foreign Relations invited students of Art Academies from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Turkey to participate in a competition. The young artists were asked to address their perception of European identity by posters. Forty-five posters were presented for consideration. A panel of judges then evaluated the designs and ultimately awarded first prize to Zdravko Delibasic (Montenegro). The second prize went to Amila Handzic from Bosnia and Herzegovina, while the third prize wad divided between Rusa Trajkova and Mahmutabic Melina from Bosnia and Herzegovina. The project gives us opportunity to support creative approach to the issue of European integration and European identity. It is a well known fact that the finding of a common understanding is at the heart of the European integration. In this sense, the metaphors presented in these posters serve to create a new context in which the European debate can flourish. My duties usually require that I spend most of my time with the politicians, but somehow I manage also to be a lecturer. This in fact has been my favorite activity, because the contact with young people like you has always made me more optimistic about the future of Europe. 4 katalog E.I.balkan.qxd :38 Stránka 6 Last year the Czech Council on Foreign Relations organized a competition of the students of EU art academies who expressed by posters their perception of the European Identity. This year we have organized similar competition for students of the South-Eastern European countries. Europe is uncompleted without these nations. As strong supporters of their membership in the EU we believe that the communication of the young generation in the region is of great importance for achieving that goal. Moreover, the presentation of the posters on Balkan s Perception of European Identity to the European public and institutions may create a better understanding of the longing, uncertainty and visions of young people in the part of Europe that is overcoming its difficult recent history. Jifií Dienstbier Poster is a phenomenon, a medium that enables quickly and immediately to share the values and inputs that inform its origin. Poster is a mirror of social and cultural developments. Unlike the other information and communication media, poster bases its message on a strong emotional component represented by its artistic and aesthetical expression, thereby multiplying its effects. Content-wise, posters come in three basic incarnations cultural, commercial and ideological though these aspects often interlap. Entries highlighted by this catalogue should be clearly perceived as ideologically motivated posters. This exhibition is ideologically motivated by the same strong impulse that gave birth to the European Union. Discussions about the EU are mostly conducted by politicians. This exhibit maps the views of the young generation. Open dialogue gives hope that cooperation and mutual rapprochement will help grasp the meaning of the questions that are being asked today. Metaphor, humor and hyperbole of artistic message are the breeding ground of knowledge. Symbolical form documents modern thought and ushers it into a clear time context. I believe this exhibition will help us come closer together and make new contacts the essence of mutual understanding. "The works by students from different countries of the European Union provide us with an opportunity to confront the ways European unity is being perceived by the respective nations. The young people possess an exceptional quality of describing reality openly, frankly and with specific humor.
