1 Program Description Embedded Systems Development Embedded Systems Development (ESD) is a 5 semester program (3 academic semesters, with 2 mandatory co-op semesters), aimed at providing the student a solid understanding of the embedded systems industry, gaining hands on skills in the development (design and implementation) of both hardware and software for embedded systems. The program integrates a hands-on, practical approach to augment theoretical knowledge a student may already have coming into the program. Applied projects and lab work, along with hands-on opportunities in co-op help prepare graduates for a career in embedded systems development. Admission Requirements Applicants must possess a diploma, advanced diploma, or degree in any of these areas: Computer engineering / technology Electronics engineering / technology Communications engineering / technology Software engineering / technology or Computer Science Other relevant disciplines may also be considered, such as mechanical engineering / mechatronics and others that offer a significant degree of electronics in their curriculum. Note re: Admission Requirements Applicants possessing degrees/diplomas from institutions where the language of instruction was not English will be required to provide test scores as evidence of their English language proficiency. Test scores, if required, would be a minimum of TOEFL 580 or 237 computer-based or 88 internet-based with TWE 4.5, IELTS 6.5 with no bands less than 6.0, CAEL 70 with no sub-test band scores less than 60, CAAT D at 65%; or equivalent scores in other recognized standard tests of English. We offer a language program for students whose English language skills are below the standard required for admission but all other admission criteria have been met. You will be eligible for admission to the post-graduate program after completion of level 4 of the General Arts and Science - English Language Studies (ELS) program with an overall grade average of 80% and no grade less than 75%. Your placement in the ELS program is determined by scores on an inhouse English language test or TOEFL or IELTS. 1

2 Admission Procedures Submit a completed Ontario College Application Form. Attach proof of the admission requirements. Applicants not meeting the admission requirements must submit a resume outlining work, experience and career goals. Final acceptance is based on a review of post-secondary background and relevant documentation. Program Information Program Outcomes Through successful completion of this program, the graduate will have reliably demonstrated the ability to: 1 Apply scientific and engineering information to creatively transform ideas and concepts into a product definition that will satisfy quality standards and customer requirements for embedded systems products. 2 Determine the need for and conduct research to design and conduct experiments to solve complex embedded systems problems. 3 Design, develop, test, configure and maintain embedded systems by the application of digital, analog and software techniques in both hardware and software embedded environments. 4 Interface computer hardware, software and electronic instrumentation into embedded systems to provide solutions to a variety of problems. 5 Integrate engineering skills and knowledge with current business strategies to provide cost-effective and economically sound embedded solutions to product realization problems. 6 Adhere to professional, ethical and legal codes of practice and comply with industrial, labour and environmental legislation. 7 Demonstrate leadership skills while working with diverse teams consisting of hardware and software specialists. 8 Communicate effectively and persuasively through oral, graphic, or print media in terms of conveying product specifications, requirements and other relevant product documentation. 2

3 Course Descriptions Course Code Title & Description EECE1xxx Digital Design This course covers the design and modeling of digital hardware systems using a hardware description language. Topics include: digital circuit design, logic synthesis and verification, the electronic properties of logic gates, electrical interfacing between logic families, asynchronous to synchronous interfacing, clock distribution and timing. ELCN1xxx Electronics Design This course extends students' knowledge and skills from a level of electronic foundation to a level of practical electronic circuit analysis, design, prototyping and testing. This course covers most of the basic radio transmission and reception circuits, and also sensor and signal conditioning circuits which will be important to interfacing devices to embedded systems. PROG1xxx Programming Principles This course extends students knowledge of software design and implementation using the C language. Topics include: algorithm design, modular code design, programming style, functions, arrays, pointers strings, data structures, and file I/O. An emphasis will be placed on proper design to produce maintainable software. PROG1xxx Data Structures and Algorithms This course emphasizes problem solving and software design that make use of efficient and effective data organization. Essential advanced data structures are discussed, analysed, and implemented. Algorithms for sorting, searching, and other applications are studied and implemented. Efficiencies and costs of selected algorithms are evaluated. CDEV1020 Co-op and Career Preparation This mandatory course prepares students for job searching for their co-op work terms and for post-graduate careers. Students will learn to critically evaluate their skills, attitudes, and expectations and evaluate and interpret available opportunities in the workplace. Self-marketing techniques using resumes, cover letters, cold-calls, and interviewing will be learned and students will learn the expectations, rules, and regulations that apply in the workplace with regards to social, organizational, ethical, and safety issues. COMM1345 Style in Scientific and Technical Writing 1 This course will prepare students to communicate technical information effectively in the field of computer and telecommunications technologies. Students will study the technical communication theory/practice and apply the knowledge to creating, critiquing, and presenting technical documents including summaries, descriptions, instructions, and memoranda/letters. CNTR1xxx Process Control 3

4 This course introduces concepts associated with the automatic control of physical systems. Topics include sensor and actuator characteristics, open-loop and closed-loop control strategies, and PID control and tuning through embedded systems. Applications involving the control of DC and stepper motors are developed. EECE1xxx Embedded Systems Hardware This course covers the design and implementation of a microcontroller-based embedded target system. The circuit design, fabrication, assembly and testing of a multi-layer printed wiring board assembly for a specified embedded control and communication application is studied. INFO1xxx Operating Systems This course performs an in-depth study of the organization of operating systems for various computer platforms. Aspects covered include process scheduling, process synchronization, multi-process computation, deadlock avoidance, and file system organization and integrity. SENG1xxx Embedded Systems Software This course covers the design, programming and testing of software for embedded systems. The implementation of software for low-level device interfacing and real-time control in a microcontroller environment is examined. COOP1xxx Co-op Work Term 1 (ESD) This course will provide students with college-approved work experience in the embedded systems hardware or software industry. The students are able to apply knowledge and skills learned in Year I of the ESD program. This course will increase the student s understanding of real-life employer expectations with regards to attitudinal, practical, and academic skills required to gain employment and enhance self-marketing skills. In addition to these employability skills, the student will also have an opportunity to apply technical knowledge from the prior semesters of study to real life situations. These essential employability and technical skills areas will be improved during the work term while the student responsibly performs the duties as defined in the job description, in accordance with course and program outcomes. SENG2xxx Software Engineering This course covers the fundamentals of software engineering, including understanding system requirements, effective methods of design, coding, and testing, team software development, verification and validation, software quality, and the application of engineering tools. Reconfigurable Systems This course covers the application of programmable logic devices in the rapid and systematic design and implementation of adaptive computing systems, as this pertains to embedded systems development. Advanced DSP Applications 4

5 An exploration of software and hardware methods used to implement digital signal processing (DSP) applications. Students will research and present a seminar on advanced computer architecture or a DSP application as this pertains to embedded systems development. Engineering Capstone Project This course involves the design, implementation and evaluation of individual and/or group projects that integrate the embedded systems knowledge and skills learned in this program. Appropriate problem solving, communication and time management skills are emphasized. COOP2xxx Co-op Work Term 2 (ESD) This course will provide students with a second college-approved work experience in the embedded systems hardware or software industry. The students are able to apply knowledge and skills learned in all academic semesters of the ESD program. This course will further improve the student s understanding of employer expectations with regards to attitudinal, practical, and academic skills required to gain employment and enhance self-marketing skills. In addition to these employability skills, the student will also have an opportunity to apply technical knowledge from the prior semesters of study to industrial situations. These essential employability and technical skills areas will be improved during the work term while the student responsibly performs the duties as defined in the job description, in accordance with course and program outcomes. 5
