Welcome to the Stephens-Burnett Memorial Library! The one constant in today s academic libraries is change, and the last few years have seen an incredible amount of change in our library. Twenty-first century library collections are transitional hybrids between traditional print media and information in electronic format. One of our greatest challenges is to make access to all formats of information as seamless as possible. The Library Web site at serves as the primary access point for library materials regardless of format. Our online catalog and library system, Millennium, provides access to most of our collections and services. The Library s Web page serves as the point of entry for our collections and services. The remainder of this guide highlights some of the policies, procedures, information, and services that are of particular interest to faculty. If you ever have any questions, please feel free to contact us; we ll be happy to help!

We view information literacy (the ability to identify an information need, find and evaluate appropriate information and use it ethically) as a key component of the educational process and life-long learning. It is recommended that an information literacy component be included in all liberal arts core courses. (For objectives and learning outcomes see Instruction is offered to all disciplines and at all levels, freshman through graduate. Contact Emaly Conerly for more information.
Millennium Online Catalog & My Millennium Carson-Newman shares its online catalog with a growing number of institutions in the Appalachian College Association. In most cases you ll want to search only our holdings. In addition to checking the catalog, you can also: place an inter-library loan, see what items you have checked out and when they re due back, renew library materials, place holds on items that are already checked out. You will need to login to My Millennium in order to perform these extra functions. Enter your last name in the Name/username box. You will need to enter cn followed by the number on your ID card (no spaces) in the Barcode/password box. (The number must be seven digits if there are only five, append two zeros at the front of the ID number. Ex: cn ) For a more complete explanation of the various ways to search the online catalog and use My Millennium, check out the How do I section of the Library Web site.
Ordering Books and Media for the Library Each academic department (or in some cases academic Division) receives an allocation of library funds to purchase books and media for the library. One person in each department (or School) is responsible for approving and sending orders to the library either electronically or in print form. Please see your Department Head or Dean for more information. Anti-Plagiarism Site The Library provides a subscription to an anti-plagiarism service called Turnitin. With this service, you will be able to submit students papers and have them compared against several different resources. The system will then issue originality reports indicating the likelihood of plagiarism. To use the system you will first need to establish an account. To do so, follow these steps: 1. Go to and click on New Users. 2. From the drop-down menu on the following page, select instructor, and click next. 3. On the next page, enter the account ID number and enrollment (contact Lew Conerly 3340, Kelli Williams 3338, or Bruce Kocour 3336, if you do not have this information); click next 4. Enter your address. For all future log-ins to Turnitin, this will be your username. Proceed to the next page. 5. Create your Turnitin password. Note that you must use at least one digit and one letter. Click next. 6. Proceed through the remainder of the profile creation process. Note that hitting enter does not always take you to the next page next does. 7. Use the wizard to create a class. Note that the class name is one of your choosing. Also, be sure to record the class ID number and whatever class enrollment password you create. If you are having your students submit their papers through Turnitin, they will need both of those pieces of information. First-time users will find the training videos and quickstart guides useful. Both are accessible from the Turnitin training resources page.
Placing Material on Reserve Wherever possible we recommend that any material you wish to be put on reserve be placed on electronic reserve our students really appreciate the 24/7 availability. If we already have the material available electronically, we will put only the link into our electronic reserve system to avoid any copyright issues. (See for examples and more information.) Journal articles and book excerpts are good candidates for electronic format. If you need to place entire books and/or videos on reserve, we offer one hour, one day, three day, and seven day options for books and one day check-out for media reserves. Regardless of format, please come by the main desk and fill out the necessary forms. Because of the time involved to set up and populate course reserves, we ask that you give us as much lead time as possible. We appreciate at least two notice. Copyright Compliance Guides The following are useful guides to understanding copyright and fair use: U. S. Copyright Office ( C-N Copyright tips ( Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis ( Randolph-Macon College ( University of North Carolina ( Library News, Database Trials, New Books Be sure to check the Library s blog, New Leaves, on the Library Web site for lists of newly received books, database trials, and other news. Click on What s New on the Library Homepage. Circulation and Inter-library Loan Policies Patron Identification Students, faculty, and administrative staff must present a Carson-Newman identification card to borrow library materials.
