There are several modes user can choose in GUI mode Metal Only ECO. 1. User can add any type of gates and let the tool map to the spare type gates, Place and Route tool should map the spare type gates to the exact spare gate instances. 2. User can pick the exact spare gate instances, and connect and disconnect up the instances in ECO. Figure 3 DEF warning A pop window appears to ask for Spare Gate Pattern which has wildcard to match all spare gates. By default, the tool sets it as spare*/*. The left part of / is the hierarchy spare* and the right part of / is instance name, *. Figure 4 Spare pattern Click OK in Figure 4 and the spare gates are list in a text window as illustrated in Figure 5. All positions are 1, 1 since DEF is not loaded. Click Menu File > Save as to save it as a spare gate list in text file for the next step.
