Camtasia Essentials: Getting Started Camtasia Studio: Windows Activity 1: Recording your Screen Step 1 Camtasia Recorder NOTE: If you do not have a speaker/headphones or a microphone plugged into your computer, you may get a warning that these items are not connected. That is OK for the purpose of this training. If you have headphones available, they may be useful later on in the activities. Step 2 Decide what you want to record (part of your desktop, an application window, your entire screen, etc.). the options in the Select Area box to define your recording space i) Full screen: Records the entire desktop and any application running on it ii) Custom: Records an area of the screen you specify. You can select standard video sizes, certain applications, or custom areas of your own choosing. The area to be recorded will be highlighted inside of a box with dashed lines. This area can be resized and reshaped by using the handlebar boxes located on the corners and sides. (Continued on next page ) ITaP Training Page 1
Step 3 your Recorded inputs. i) Leave webcam off unless you have a webam (or built in camera) that you wish to record. Step 4 ii) Turn off Audio by the microphone button until it says Audio off. NOTE: Using the drop-down menu for the audio would otherwise allow you to choose specific audio tracks to include. System audio can be turned off to avoid audio interruptions from program notifications, though it would need to be left on to record system sounds (such as clicking) and any media files playing during your recording. You can control the recorder using either your mouse or specific keys. i) F9 Starts a recording ii) F10 Ends a recording the rec button (or hit F9) to start your recording You will see a countdown in your selected recording area. Once the countdown hits zero, your recording will start. a 30 second video of your screen. Feel free to move your mouse around, open files, type, or perform any other actions within the recording window. Don t worry if your movie is not exactly 30 seconds. Step 5 Once you have stopped your recording, the preview will play. At this point you can: i) Save and Edit: Saves your recording as a file (.camrec) and opens it up in Camtasia Studio for a complete editing experience (cut, trim, audio, video, effects, etc.) ii) Produce: Allows you to produce a final version of your recording (without editing) in a standard movie format of your choice iii) Delete: Deletes your recording. This operation cannot be undone. ITaP Training Page 2
Save and Edit (the top of the button, not the drop-down)if you are happy with your movie. If you want to start over, delete it and try again. your file TestMovie and it. The system will default to saving in Documents >Camtasia, though you can choose an easier place to find, such as your desktop. NOTE: Long recording files can get quite large, and if you make a lot of movies, you may exceed your storage space on your career account. If you plan on doing a lot of work with movies, you may look into other options for saving your data including USB drives and BoilerBackpack ( Once your video is saved, Camtasia Studio should automatically open to edit your recording. ITaP Training Page 3
Activity 2: Getting started with Camtasia Studio Step 1 If you are following along from Activity 1, Camtasia Studio should have automatically opened when you chose Save and Edit and saved your file. If you are in Camtasia Studio and have a window asking What size do you want your video to be? to Step 2. If Camtasia Studio does not open automatically or if you don t see the window to the right, please follow these steps: i) Camtasia Studio ii) iii) iv) Import media for your recording. This will add it to the Clip Bin. on the video in your Clip Bin. v) Add to Timeline at Playhead. vi) You should now see the What size do you want your video to be window. Step 2 the dimensions for your video (see Step 1 image) and OK. NOTE: Generally, you should keep the dimensions of the recording you made (which will be the default). ITaP Training Page 4
Your clip will now be on the timeline. You should see it listed as Track 1. Step 3 the Play button underneath the video screen on the right. what is happening on your screen as the video plays. The time marker on the video screen moves along with the playhead on the timeline. the playhead along the timeline of your recording. You can control what is shown in the playback window. the magnify slider to make your recording take up the length of the timeline on your screen. Notice that if you magnify, timeline hash marks signify lower time increments. (continue to the next activity) ITaP Training Page 5
Activity 3: Manipulating your Media on the Timeline Step 1 the playhead to near the end of your recording. 5 seconds of video to the right of the marker. NOTE: The timeline extends infinitely. Tracks added to the timeline are only as long as the shaded area on that track. The final movie (made up of all tracks) will be as long as the track that extends the furthest down the timeline. the red slider on the right of the playhead to the end of your recording. The playhead will move with the red slider, but the green slider on the left will stay in its original position. Notice how this paints the area between the green slider and the red slider. This means the area has been selected on the timeline. play and your video will start playing the selected area from the location of the playhead to the red slider. You can do this to preview smaller areas of the timeline for editing. Step 2 With the last 5 seconds of your clip selected, on the Scissors icon. You have just trimmed the end off of your video. The selected area should disappear and your video should now end 5 seconds sooner on the timeline NOTE: Camtasia remembers your past actions. You can always undo something using the Undo button above the timeline to the left of the Scissors. Taking what you learned from Step 1 and Step 2, recording. the first 5 seconds off of your ITaP Training Page 6
Stretch your Skill (optional) Making Cuts Mid-Recording Step 1 a small segment in the middle of your recording. out that segment. When you make a cut within your video, it will leave a stitch mark on your timeline. NOTE: You can use cuts in order to remove unwanted footage from your recording. This means that recordings don t need to be perfect when they are made. If you make a mistake or want to try something out while recording, pause (to allow extra room for cutting), then continue on. Stretch your Skill (optional) Extending a frame Step 1 Extend a frame to pause a frame to allow for extended view for viewers. To get started, move the marker to area of a clip you wish to extend. on the clip and the Extend Frame option. ITaP Training Page 7
The Extend Frame tool will appear. This tool allows you to extend the frame second-bysecond using the arrows and you can type in seconds with partial seconds applied such as 1.5. or the arrows to set the duration. Then, OK. If you wish to change the duration of the extended frame, area and then Duration. the duration and Ok. within the frame ITaP Training Page 8
Activity 4: Adding and Manipulating Other Media Step 1 Import media at the top of the Clip Bin. for your media (music, video, images, etc). For this training, one of the three music files (such as Kalimba) located in Libraries> Music>Sample Music and Open. The file you chose should now be added to the clip bin under Audio. the playhead to the far left on the timeline (0:00). on the audio file in the clip bin and Add to timeline at playhead. The file should now be visible on your timeline. Notice that it was added as Track 2. NOTE: Think of tracks like layers of a cake. They stack on top of each other and add their qualities to the whole. When you ve completed building a cake and add icing, the layers are not apparent from the outside. When your final video is saved, all tracks are merged into a single video, hiding all of the tracks that make it up. Tracks allow you to manipulate different pieces of your video without affecting the rest of the pieces. ITaP Training Page 9
For the time being, we want to make sure that we don t do anything to our video on Track 1. on the lock next to Track 1 to ensure no changes are made to that track. When a track is locked, the padlock will be closed and the track will fill with diagonal stripes. Step 2 Notice that on the audio track, you can see the levels of the audio on the bottom edge of the track. Loud portions of audio are higher. You can trim tracks as we did with the recording. NOTE: Use the playhead and sliders if you need to make trims in the middle of a piece of media. If you are trimming the start or end of a track, you can trim the track by dragging the end to make it shorter. your cursor to the end of the track. It will change to a double-sided arrow. With the double arrow, the end of the audio track until it is the same length as the video in Track 1. NOTE: When you save your final movie, it will be as long as your longest track. ITaP Training Page 10
Stretch your Skill (optional) Moving Media Clips Step 1 You can move entire clips on the timeline by clicking on them. in the middle of Track 2 and it should turn blue. the audio to the right. Notice how this leaves a gap. You can gaps in the middle of clips by using the Split tool and splitting clips into two pieces at the location of the playhead. You can use gaps in tracks to make space for other media to be inserted. Try splitting clips and moving them around. Stretch your Skill (optional) Add a Quiz Complete your movie before adding your quiz Use the Camtasia Studios editing tool to make all desired changes to your recording before adding your quiz. This includes making cuts, adding alternate audio/video tracks, and adding video effects such as callouts. Inserting the quiz before editing is complete can complicate your recording s timeline. (Continue to next page) ITaP Training Page 11
Step 1: Turn on Quiz view on the Cog Icon on the far left of your recording s timeline In the resulting dropdown menu, Show Quiz view This will add a Quiz track to your timeline and will also make the Quizzing tab available on the editing ribbon Step 2: Place quiz the playhead to the point where you would like your quiz to start on the Quizzing icon on the editing ribbon (depending on the size of your screen, it may be in the more menu on the Add quiz button ITaP Training Page 12
You will now see your quiz above the playhead on the quiz area of the your recording s timeline the Quiz name field with the name of your quiz Step 3: Create quiz questions There are two options to the left of the Quizzing screen under Quiz options: i) Score quiz: Check this box if you would like your questions to be graded automatically. You will not see options for Answers (as described below) if this box is not checked. ii) Viewer can see answers after submitting: Check this box if you would like your students to be able to review their answers and the correct answers immediately after the quiz. Under Question options, the Question type that matches what you want to ask for Question 1. Your choices are: Multiple Choice, Fill in the Blank, Short Answer, and True/False. In the Question box, on the default text for Question 1 and in the text you want for the first question. Depending on the Question type selected, you will have different options available in the Answers box (if you ve checked the Score quiz box, as noted above): i) Multiple Choice: on <Type an answer choice here>, in an answer choice, and then. Repeat the process to add additional choices. the checkbox by the correct answer. ITaP Training Page 13
ii) Fill in the Blank: in acceptable answers in the Answers box. Capitalization does not matter though spelling does. Provide as many acceptable answers as needed. To be counted correct, the student s answer must exactly match one of the acceptable answers you have provided. iii) Short Answer: This type of question cannot be graded automatically and is not included in the quiz score. Answers provided by students can only be accessed if you later choose to receive reports of grades (though this may be a FERPA violation and is not recommended) iv) True/False: Select whether the correct answer to your question is True or False. this process for as many questions as you would like to include at this point in your recording by clicking Add question and repeating the above process. You may add more than one quiz on the quiz timeline. You can edit any quiz by on that quiz s marker on the Quiz timeline. ITaP Training Page 14
Activity 5: Producing your Movie With your editing finished for your movie project, it is time to produce a video that can be played by others. Step 1 Go to the top of the Clip Bin and Produce and share. In the Production Wizard, MP4 Only (720p). If you want to create a smaller video file, you can also choose 480p. If you created a movie with a quiz, you would need to either Share to Screencast.com or produce your movie using the one of the MP4 with video player options. Next>. a name and a place to save your movie files. Finish. You will see a progress bar as your video is made. This can take a while if you make a long video. When finished, Camtasia will default to displaying your production details and opening your movie. Finish to close the Production Results window. (Continue to next page) ITaP Training Page 15
A folder containing your video files will be produced. The movie file is an MP4 file. NOTE: If you wish to upload your video to Blackboard, you should use the Kaltura video tool so that you do not use up the space quota in Blackboard for your course. Please refer to the documentation about uploading videos to Kaltura found on ITaP s website. ITaP Training Page 16
