3 Course Description The main goal is to enhance the knowledge base and core competence of attendees by providing primary care practitioners with up-to-date, evidence-based information on commonly encountered dermatological issues, while suggesting pragmatic approaches to clinical management. This learning activity is expected to result in improved competence in making appropriate diagnosis, providing effective treatment, and timely referral or follow-up care. Ultimately, these efforts will lead to improved patient outcomes. Target Audience This course is designed to be of interest to primary care physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners and nurses who wish to improve their ability to diagnose and treat the most common dermatoses. Objectives At the conclusion of the course, participants should be able to: Distinguish between the different corticosteroid vehicles and when to use one vehicle over another; discuss the choice of steroid potency; and describe when steroid injections are valuable. Recognize classic manifestations of psoriasis; recognize atypical forms of psoriasis; and implement proper interventions for psoriasis based upon disease severity. Demonstrate the ability to accurately diagnose the variable presentations of atopic dermatitis in different patient populations; describe the atopic triad and the relationship between allergy and atopic dermatitis; and construct appropriate treatment and management options for patients with atopic dermatitis. Demonstrate the ability to diagnose the variable presentations of contact dermatitis; discuss causes of contact dermatitis and the value of patch testing; and describe the most effective treatments for allergic contact dermatitis. Distinguish a dermal hypersensitivity syndrome such as DRESS (Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms) from a simple drug eruption. Distinguish the most common types of skin cancers from other skin lesions. Compare biopsy techniques used in diagnostic evaluation of skin cancer. Identify methods for treating skin cancers. Seborrhea Objectives: 1) Demonstrate the ability to diagnose the variable presentations of seborrhea 2) Discuss causes and exacerbating factors for seborrhea 3) Describe the most effective treatments for seborrhea Recognize different types of rosacea; distinguish rosacea from other causes of red rashes on the face; and formulate treatment plans for rosacea. Distinguish among infestations of scabies, head/body lice, and bed bugs; describe the presentations of the most common viral skin and bacterial infections; and compare treatment options for scabies, lice, viral, and bacterial infections. Identify the most common cutaneous fungal infections; determine when topical therapy is preferred to systemic therapy; and conversely; delineate differential diagnosis for cutaneous fungal infection. Identify the common types of toenail and fingernail fungal infections; recognize the potential medical significance and implication of onychomycosis. Demonstrate the ability to diagnose the variable presentations of urticaria; discuss causes of urticaria; and 3 describe the most effective treatments for urticaria. Discuss the proposed etiology of acne vulgaris; utilize appropriate criteria to diagnose acne as mild, moderate, or severe; and formulate treatment plans for acne, and modify therapies as necessary, to minimize adverse side effects and maximize benefits. Recognize acneiform skin eruptions due to exogenous factors; recognize the patterns of exogenous acne; and formulate appropriate treatment interventions for common acne-like eruptions.
