1 Operations Management SCM , Summer Online Version Instructor Dr. Larry Taube Web Resources UNCG Blackboard Course Management System: Blackboard Guidelines: 1. Check Blackboard DAILY! 2. Make sure you update your Internet browser so that Blackboard functions properly on your computer lrtaube@uncg.edu ( is the most efficient way to contact me.) Rules: 1. Put SCM 302 somewhere in the subject line. 2. Use your UNCG account. 3. Try not to ask me questions that you can answer yourself by looking at the syllabus or the blackboard site. You should read the Welcome info followed by the Syllabus a couple of times. 4. Don't expect an immediate reply. I usually respond with a one day lead time, but often sooner. 5. When replying to one of my s, please leave all info in your reply. Telephone/Office Bryan421 Summer 2011 Start Date Monday, May 23 Finish Date Friday June 24 AACSB and Bryan Student Learning Objectives: Oral & Written Communications Content: These topics are addressed through the homework, project memos, class discussions, and individual participation. Technology Applications: This is addressed through the application of spreadsheets to aid in the decision-making process. Several different spreadsheet models are used at different points throughout the course, as this online course emphasizes Excel. Students will be expected, whenever possible, to use appropriate information technology in the completion of assignments.
2 Ethical Perspectives: Even though specific coverage of ethical issues is generally not done in this class, students will be made aware of the importance of ethical considerations in making location decisions. Our discussion here always includes the pros and cons of locating a new facility in say Mexico or Ghana or Germany. Global Perspectives: This course spends a great deal of time on worldwide competition, the Japanese development of JIT and its application by others, global supply chain management, and global manufacturing. Demographic Diversity Perspectives: This course discusses the cultural impacts on different work forces. Political, Social, Legal, Regulatory & Environmental Perspectives: Of these five perspectives, the environmental perspective receives the greatest amount of emphasis. Companies focus operations on making better products, and part of being better is being environmentally sound. General Education Student Learning Objectives: This course builds on UNCG's general education categories of Critical Thinking, Analytical Capabilities, Written Communication Skills, and the Global Marker. COGNITIVE COURSE OBJECTIVES Upon completing the course, the student should be able to: 1) Differentiate between productivity, effectiveness, efficiency, and other performance measures for operations management. 2) Use project management techniques to plan a project. 3) Distinguish between long range, intermediate range, and short range capacity planning in operations management. 4) Compare and contrast the different types of conversion systems (i.e., project, job shop, mass production, and continuous process). 5) Explain the factors that make a service operation more difficult to manage as compared to a manufacturing operation. 6) Understand the role played by total quality management in organizations. 7) Develop and use a process control chart for managing quality. 8) Identify the factors that influence the location of service vs manufacturing facilities. 9) Identify the important issues related to facility design decisions. 10) Understand the role of a forecasting system in the operations of an organization. 11) Describe the typical objectives and constraints in the aggregate planning problem related to both manufacturing and service organizations. 12) Differentiate the inventory management concerns between dependent demand items and independent demand items. 13) Understand the value and importance of various Just-In-Time/Total Quality Management ( JIT/TQM or Pull ) systems and techniques. 14) Discuss the role of Enterprise-wide Resource Planning (ERP) Systems in organizations in general, and supply chain/network management in particular. 15) Think systemically about organizations and management processes, and demonstrate these abilities in one or more appropriate forms: flow process chart, report to management, memorandum, proposal, and/or feasibility report.

Faculty and Student Guidelines Our Commitment (see Special Note re Online Courses: as we communicate with each other via s and other electronic methods, it is important to know that the "listener" can't see our expressions or "read between the lines." It is easy to offend someone re s, and never know you did! I think each of us needs to be thoughtful with our messages in this context. The administration, faculty, staff, and students of the Bryan School of Business and Economics at UNCG are committed to professional and ethical behavior in all areas of their academic and professional lives. The principles and expectations established in this document and the addendums encompass many aspects of professional behavior and integrity. It is not an exhaustive list, since change is part of life both inside and outside the university. This set of Guidelines constitutes a statement of values and expectations; concerns and issues are still best addressed by conversations between the individual faculty member and student. If further discussions are necessary, please contact the faculty member s Department Head. Expectations of All Learning Community Members: The first sentence of the UNCG Student Code of Conduct is: Members of the UNCG community respect fundamental principles for ensuring a campus environment conducive to peaceful and productive living and study. These principles include five values: honesty, trust, fairness, respect, and responsibility. All university members (students, faculty, and staff) have a responsibility to uphold these five values, and this is true in the Bryan classroom environment (both face-to-face and web) and related academic activities.
