1 EUROPEAN MUSLIM WOMEN OF INFLUENCE

2 Muslim women have been influential since the origins of Islam; we need only to mention the name of the Prophet Mohammed s wife, Khadija, a successful businesswoman of outstanding character, to know this. It was of course Khadija who was the first to hear about the Prophet receiving the revelations which became the Qur an; her faith in him led her to become the first person after the Prophet to convert to Islam. Influence is an interesting word. Being an influential leader, an inspiring character, is often defined by talking about charisma; being a risk taker, and being an extrovert. Of course, we all know and have been inspired or influenced by women who are both. But this can be the exception rather than the rule.the power to persuade, to be humble enough to listen and to be strong enough to be reflective are also a big part of being influential. There is much to be gained from celebrating the range of achievements of the many Muslim women who form an integral part of European society. I feel privileged to be part of this project and look forward to following the women s stories as they continue to inspire and influence the world in which we live. RAZIA IQBAL

3 The European Muslim Women of Influence (EMWI) initiative celebrates the achievements of Muslim women in a plethora of social arenas with an aim to raise awareness of Muslim women s contributions to European life, diversify the mainstream representation of Muslim women, and inspire accomplishment across Europe s diverse communities. EMWI is facilitated by the Institute for Strategic Dialogue through its CEDAR Network. CEDAR is the first pan-european Muslim professionals network that seeks to bolster a culture of success and leadership amongst Europe s diverse Muslim communities. Nominations for the 2010 EMWI List came from 11 European countries and spanned a diverse range of fields, including law, journalism, religion, the arts, government and medicine.the 2010 shortlisted candidates are profiled in this booklet.
