Draw a square on the floor for the kitchen. Draw a garden path, a road and a river on the floor (or use coloured sticky tape.) Put a table in the kitchen covered in a cloth. The child playing the gingerbread man is under the table, hidden by the tablecloth. Chorus: Cuckoo! Cuckoo! Cuckoo! The cat: (The child playing the cat comes out of the Chorus into the kitchen.) What s the time, Billy? Billy: (The child playing Billy comes out of the Chorus into the kitchen.) It s three o clock. The cat: Is it time for tea, Grandma? Grandma: (The child playing Grandma comes out of the Chorus into the kitchen.) No. It isn t time for tea. Billy: I m hungry. The cat: Billy s hungry, Grandma. Chorus: Make a gingerbread man for tea, Grandma! The cat: Yes. Make a gingerbread man for tea, Grandma! Billy: Yes. Please, Grandma! Grandma: (She makes a gingerbread man on the table. Then she shows him to Billy.) Here you are, Billy. Billy: Give him a mouth and eyes, Grandma. Grandma: Yes, Billy. (She puts a mouth and eyes on the gingerbread man.) Billy: Put buttons on him, Grandma. 4

5 Grandma: Yes, Billy. (She puts buttons on the gingerbread man.) The cat: Four buttons, Grandma. Billy: Yes! One, two, three, four buttons. Chorus: Put the gingerbread man in the oven, Grandma. (Grandma puts the gingerbread man in the oven.) Billy: Hip, hip, hooray! A gingerbread man for tea today! Chorus: Cuckoo! Cuckoo! Cuckoo! Cuckoo! The cat: What s the time, Billy? Billy: It s four o clock. The cat: Is it time for tea, Grandma? Grandma: Yes, it s time for tea. Call Grandpa, Billy. Billy: (He opens the window.) Grandpa! Grandpa: Yes, Billy. Billy: Come in! It s time for tea. Chorus: It s time for tea, Grandpa. Grandpa: (The child playing Grandpa comes out of the Chorus into the kitchen.) I m hungry. What s for tea today? Chorus: Grandpa s hungry. What s for tea, Grandma? Grandma: A gingerbread man, Grandpa. Grandpa: Hip, hip, hooray! A gingerbread man for tea today! Chorus: Take him out of the oven, Grandma! (Grandma takes the gingerbread man out of the oven.) Chorus: Put him on the table, Grandma! (Grandma puts the gingerbread man on the table.) Grandpa, Billy and The cat: (Pointing at the gingerbread man.) Mmmmm! A gingerbread man for tea! Gingerbread Man: (The child playing the gingerbread man comes out from under the table.) I m NOT for tea. I want to play. Come and catch me! (He runs out of the kitchen and on to the garden path. Children can run on the spot if there isn t much room.) Billy: Stop! Stop, Mr Gingerbread Man! (He runs after the gingerbread man.) 5

6 Grandma: Stop! Stop, Mr Gingerbread Man! (She runs after the gingerbread man.) Grandpa: Stop! Stop, Mr Gingerbread Man! (He runs after the gingerbread man.) The dog: (The child playing the dog comes out of the Chorus onto the path.) Stop! Stop, Mr Gingerbread Man! I m hungry. (He runs after the gingerbread man.) The horse: (The child playing the horse comes out of the Chorus onto the road.) Stop! Stop, Mr Gingerbread Man! I m hungry. (He runs after the gingerbread man.) The cow: (The child playing the cow comes out of the Chorus onto the road.) Stop! Stop, Mr Gingerbread Man! I m hungry. (She runs after the gingerbread man.) Billy, Grandma, Grandpa, the dog, the horse and the cow: Stop, Mr Gingerbread Man! We want to eat you for tea. Gingerbread Man: (He stops running.) Oh no! A river! I don t like water. The fox: (The child playing the fox comes out of the Chorus to the river.) Hello, Mr Gingerbread Man. Gingerbread Man: Hello, Mr Fox. Take me across the river, please. The fox: Jump on my back, Mr Gingerbread Man! Gingerbread Man: Thank you, Mr Fox. (He holds on to the back of the child playing the fox.) Chorus: Oh no! Mr Fox is hungry. He wants to eat the gingerbread man for tea. Gingerbread Man: Help! My feet are in the water! The fox: Jump on my nose, Mr Gingerbread Man! (The child playing the gingerbread man changes position and holds on the the front of the child playing the fox. They swim across the river.) 6

The cow: Goodbye, Mr Gingerbread Man. Goodbye! (She goes back into the Chorus.) The horse: Goodbye, Mr Gingerbread Man. Goodbye! (He goes back into the Chorus.) The dog: Goodbye, Mr Gingerbread Man. Goodbye! (He goes back into the Chorus.) Billy: Goodbye, Mr Gingerbread Man. Goodbye! (He/She goes back into the Chorus.) Grandma: Goodbye, Mr Gingerbread Man. Goodbye!
