The skull was one metre long, but was thick with little room for a brain. Triangular horns in the corners of its head. One of the largest armoured dinosaurs. Muscular tail could swing from side to side. Ankylosaurus means stiff lizard.

3 Brachiosaurus Weight 30,000-80,000 kilograms Size 30m long and 13m high Europe, North Africa, North America Woodlands Herbivorous Ate leaves and fruit on tall tree-like plants. One of the biggest land animals ever. Front legs were bigger than the hind legs, so its back sloped up towards the head. Upper arm bone was over 2 metres long! Lived about 100 years on average. Brachiosaurus means arm lizard.

4 Giganotosaurus Weight 8,000 kilograms Size 12.m long and 5m high South America Swamps Ate other animals. Bigger and faster than a Tyrannosaurus Rex but lived 30 million years before. Three fingers on its hands. Small brain, shaped like a banana. Giganotosaurus means giant southern lizard.

5 Hadrosaurus Weight 3,000 kilograms Size 9m long and 5m high South America Swamps Herbivorous Ate plants. Nostrils ran up inside the crest on its head, causing it to make hooting / honking sounds. Arms could be raised from the ground to run or put on the ground to walk. Some had 2,000 teeth! Hadrosaurus means big lizard.

6 Iguanadon Weight 4,000-5,000 kilograms Size 10m long and 4m high North America, Asia, Europe Woodlands Herbivorous Ate plants. Had a sharp thumb spike to protect itself. Probably moved on four legs but could also run on two. Bones from four Iguanadon herds were first discovered in a coal mine in Iguanadon means iguana tooth.

7 Plesiosaur Weight 500 kilograms Size From 2.5m to 14m long Oceans around the world Ate fish and other swimming animals. They were reptiles, not dinosaurs. Couldn t breathe underwater so had to come to the surface for air. Scientists thought they filled their stomachs with stones to weigh them down. Plesiosaur means near lizard.

8 Pterosaur Weight Up to 150 kilograms Size Wingspan from 5cm to 12m Europe and South Africa Swamps Ate fish, insects and scavenged dead animals They were flying reptiles, not dinosaurs. They had hollow bones filled with air to make them light and aid flight. Their wing membranes were made up of several layers of tough leathery skin. Pterosaur means winged lizard.

9 Spinosaurus Weight 4,000 kilograms Size 18m long and 5m high North Africa Swamps Ate fish and maybe other dinosaurs. The sail may have helped it keep a constant body temperature and attract a mate. No complete skeleton has ever been found. Had a long skull, like a crocodile. Original fossils destroyed in WWII. Spinosaurus means thorn lizard.

10 Stegosaurus Weight 2,000 kilograms Size 8m long and 4m high North America Woodlands Herbivorous Ate plants. Scientists used to think it had two brains. Could only chew soft plant material. Poor eyesight but a good sense of smell. Bony plates may have been for defence or to help keep it cool. Stegosaurus means roof lizard.

11 Triceratops Weight 5,500 kilograms Size 9m long and 3m high North America Woodlands Herbivorous Ate plants. Used its horns to stab at its enemies. Bony frill helped to protect the neck and also attracted a mate. The skull was about one third of the Triceratops total length. Triceratops means three horned face.

12 Tyrannosaurus Rex Weight 7,000 kilograms Size 12m long and 5m high North America Forests and swamps Ate other dinosaurs. Had 60 teeth, each one up to 20cm long. Bite was 3 times more powerful than a lion. Had a good sense of smell. They often fought each other, either over food or mates. Tyrannosaurus Rex means tyrant lizard.

13 Velociraptor Weight 7,000 to 15,000 kilograms Size 2m long and 1m high Asia Woodlands Ate small mammals and dinosaurs. Had a fine feather-like covering. Claws on second toe kept off the ground when running to keep them sharp. Second toe claw could be flicked through 180º and were used to slash prey. Velociraptor means quick plunderer.
