1 APPLICATION NOTE Remote access to the Network controller Introduction This application note (AN) describes how to have access to a Praesideo Network Controller (NCO) from a remote PC via a standard PSTN telephone line. The AN will give a basic set-up of the system and a description of the configuration of the PC and LAN modem with screen dumps. The LAN modem, used for this AN, is the 3Com, Dual 56k LAN modem, 3C888 but basically any LAN modem can be used. General. The Praesideo Network controller can be configured from a PC via an Ethernet connection. This Ethernet connection can be extended with special modems. This offers the possibility to extend the Ethernet connection via PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network) and ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) lines to virtually any place in the world. This AN describes the connection via a PSTN line. Even though the data transfer speed of a PSTN line is quite low it is possible to perform a complete download of the Praesideo SW, provided that the connection is not interrupted during the transfer. Configuring a Praesideo system, downloading a message set and viewing the diagnostic pages will all be possible via the telephone line and all at a low but acceptable speed. Specially for projects at a remote location this possibility, to have a look inside the system, could be a huge advantage in solving the problem before sending out a service engineer. Also, changes in the system can be made via this connection from behind you office desk. Block diagram The block diagram below shows the basic set-up for a connection to a remote NCO. Because almost all PC s, specially Laptop s, have a standard PSTN modem inside, the only additional equipment necessary for the connection is the LAN modem next to the NCO AN Remote access to the NCO 1-18

2 Specific information of the LAN modem can be found in the User Guide that comes with the unit. In this AN only limited functionality of the modem is used in order to achieve the required connection. Very easy the system can be expanded without additional costs. The 3Com LAN modem we used for this test has a 4 port Hub inside. Up to 4 units, NCO or PC s can be connected. Security To prevent unauthorized access to the NCO via the telephone line there are several security levels Telephone number Username and Password for the connection to the LAN modem Username and Password for the NCO Probably the best possible security: Disconnect the telephone line to the LAN modem when the connection is not needed. Preparations Before starting the configuration, prepare the following information: Telephone number of the telephone line that will be used for the NCO o In this example, Tel. number : 989 IP-address and subnet mask of the LAN modem o Default for the 3Com LAN modem, IP address : o Default for the 3Com LAN modem, Subnet mask : IP-address and subnet mask of the NCO o In this example, IP address : o In this example, Subnet mask : o In this example, Default gateway : Username for the connection o In this example, Username : bosch Password for the connection o In this example, Password : bosch AN Remote access to the NCO 2-18

3 First time set-up 3Com LAN modem. Check the Getting Started Guide that is supplied with the LAN modem to make the first connection to the modem. First time connection from a PC to the LAN modem can only be achieved via Ethernet port of the PC and the nr 1 Ethernet port on the back of the LAN modem. LAN modem LAN port 1 PSU PC with Ethernet port The default IP address of the LAN modem is: Open Internet Explorer on your PC and enter the LAN modem address: and press <Enter> If you don t get the opening screen, check the Getting Started Guide that is supplied with the LAN modem, chapter 6, Troubleshooting. Click <Click here to Continue> AN Remote access to the NCO 3-18

4 This password is to protect your configuration of the LAN modem. You can enter a password here but you can leave it blank as well. In this example enter: bosch Click <Submit> No entries, Click <Continue> No entries, Click <Abort> AN Remote access to the NCO 4-18

5 Click <OK> This is the Home page of the LAN modem. All settings can be configured from this page. Click <Dial-in > Click <Dial-in Global> Set <Channels allocated for Dail-in> to <1> Set <Auto Answer (modem 1)> to <1> <Auto answer> must be set to 1 or higher to be able to dial-in to the modem. <PPP Authentication>, by default all three are set. Click <Submit> AN Remote access to the NCO 5-18

6 Click <Dial-in Users> Pull down <User Name> and select <New Dial-in User> Click <Select> Enter a (User) name Enter a password : bosch : bosch The user name and password must be the same as in the remote Dial-in connection on the remote PC! Scroll down Click <Submit> Click <Main Menu> Click <Workstation Configuration> AN Remote access to the NCO 6-18

7 Click <For Workstation settings click here> Select the IP address of the NCO and mark it <Reserved> Enter the name: NCO Scroll down Click <Submit> Click <Home> Click <LAN Parameters> AN Remote access to the NCO 7-18

8 These are the default settings Click <Submit> The 3Com LAN modem is now set for the functions we need for remote access to the NCO. Terminate Internet Explorer AN Remote access to the NCO 8-18

9 Windows 2000 Dial-up connection To set-up a new dial-up connection follow the following procedure. Click: <Start> <Settings> <Network and Dial-up Connections> <Make a new connection> The Network Connection Wizard will open. Click <Next> Select <Dial-up to private network> Click <Next> AN Remote access to the NCO 9-18

10 Select modem Click <Next> Enter the telephone number 989 Click <Next> In this example an internal telephone line is used. Select <Use dialing rules> if area and country codes are required AN Remote access to the NCO 10-18

11 Make a selection Select <For all users> if you want all users on the PC to have access to this connection. Click <Next> If <Add a shortcut to my desktop> in the next screen is selected all users will have the link to this connection on there Desktop. Enter the name for the connection Bosch internal line 989 Select <Add a shortcut to my desktop>. A shortcut on your desktop prevents you from losing the connection. Click <Finish> AN Remote access to the NCO 11-18

12 Edit the properties of the connection Click: <Start> <Settings> <Network and Dial-up Connections> Right click <Bosch internal line 989> The telephone number should already be there If not selected, select <Show icon in taskbar when connected> It is very convenient to have this icon in the taskbar. You can immediately see if the connection is established and if there is communication. Select Tap: <Security> Select <Allow unsecured password> Select Tap: <Networking> AN Remote access to the NCO 12-18

13 Mark <Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)> Click <Properties> Select < Obtain an IP address automatically> Select <Obtain DNS server address automatically> Click <Advanced> AN Remote access to the NCO 13-18

14 Select: <Use default gateway on remote network> Select: <Use IP header compression> Close all windows Click <OK>, <OK> and <OK> AN Remote access to the NCO 14-18

15 Remote access to the NCO via the LAN modem Double click the icon on your desktop. Enter User name Enter Password : <bosch> : <bosch> If you don t want to lose the password, mark <Save password> The telephone number 989 should already be there. Click <Dial> AN Remote access to the NCO 15-18

16 When the connection is established the following screen will appear and a small icon will appear in the taskbar indicating that the connection to the LAN modem has been made. Click <OK> You are now connected to the LAN modem AN Remote access to the NCO 16-18

17 Connect to the Network controller Configuration screen Open Internet Explorer Enter the IP address of the NCO: Press <Enter> Click <Continue> Default: User Name Password : admin : admin Click <OK> Once you re in this screen you have the same functions as from a direct connection to the NCO however at a lower transfer speed. FTA, File transfer application Open the File Transfer application Enter the IP address of the NCO: Enter User name: admin Enter Password: admin Click <Connect to NC> AN Remote access to the NCO 17-18
