1 FIRST AID POLICY Related Policies: Legal Responsibilities and Authority Anaphylaxis Asthma Diabetes Infectious Diseases Medication Dispensing Purpose: To provide school staff with guidelines to ensure the safety of themselves and the students in their care when dealing with accidents and emergencies, and minor medical procedures. Policy: Teachers, as part of their general duty of care, are obligated to provide assistance to injured and sick students. If a student is sick or injured, the teacher must do everything possible to assist that child. Each school is to have a designated First Aid Officer. The staff are to keep their Resuscitation certificates current by participating in annual upgraded sessions, biannual anaphylaxis training and First Aid Certificates updated when training sessions are offered. 10% of staff (small schools minimum 2) are to have current Senior First Aid qualifications. Under the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1989, all places of work are required to have and maintain First Aid kits that are readily accessible. The Regulations specify what the First Aid kits are to contain and where they are to be located. A member of the staff is to be appointed to be in charge of the kit. Schools are to develop procedures, including the use of the CCI Accident Book, for recording injuries requiring First Aid or other medical treatment. The school has available plastic gloves, plastic bags, bleach, suitable measuring containers, disinfectant, dressings and appropriately stocked First Aid Kit. Definitions: First Aid: the initial administration of treatment in the case of accidents that may precede the involvement of a doctor or full medical care being obtained. First aid is the immediate care given to an ill or injured person until more advanced care arrives or the person recovers. In an emergency situation first aid aims to maintain life, prevent further harm/injury, ease pain and prevent

2 deterioration of the person's condition until professional medical help can be obtained. First Aid Facilities: means first aid kits, first aid room/area and first aid equipment. Anaphylaxis: The most severe form of allergic reaction. CPR: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation The technique which combines expired air resuscitation and external chest compressions for a victim whose breathing and heart have stopped. First Aid Qualifications: A certified course run by a recognised provider such as Red Cross or St John's Ambulance. First Aid Personnel: A first aid register containing the names of all first aid personnel, the title of their first aid qualification and the date of expiry of the qualification is kept at the school. Catholic Church Insurance Book (C.C.I): In the event of an injury, other than a minor injury, details of circumstances surrounding the incident and extent of the injury shall be entered into the C.C.I Book by the supervising teacher. The Book shall be kept in First Aid room. Sick Bay Record Book: All children sent to Sick Bay must be signed in a school staff member. The book must record the date, name, time, nature of illness, parent notified, sign in, departure time and sign out time. The book is kept in the First Aid room and cupboard. Procedures: All teachers at St Mary s are encouraged to have up to date CPR/Emergency/Anaphylaxis qualifications. In the event of an injury to child requiring minor first aid, such treatment shall be administered by the Clerical Assistants to that child. If they are not available then treatment shall be administered by a staff member. Injured or sick children who report to sick bay at the front office will have their name will be entered into the Sick Bay Record Book. In the event of an injury, other than a minor injury, details of circumstances surrounding the incident and extent of the injury shall be entered into the C.C.I Book by the supervising teacher. At St Mary s we acknowledge the following regulations as they pertain to First Aid- Maintenance of First Aid kits including kits for sporting and educational excursions and events The requirements regarding incident reporting and investigation are maintained and adhered to Maintain, update and display prominently in the school and classrooms Medical Alert Lists Invite consultants from the various health fields (e.g., Diabetes, Asthma) to provide current inservicing for all staff on treatments specific to that area pf expertise.

3 Responsibilities of First Aid personnel Injured or sick children report to sick bay at the front office Where a serious incident has occurred, the teacher on duty should remain with the child and have a message sent directly to the front office or staff room The first aid personnel on duty undertake the initial management of the sick or injured persons to a level consistent with their training and competence If a child is obviously sick, parent/guardians or emergency contacts should be contacted as a matter of course When the first aid requirements are beyond the level of training of the first aid personnel, the Principal is notified, the parents are contacted and medical assistance is sought. The sick or injured student must be notified at all times, until first aid is no longer required or the sick/injured student is taken into the care of their parents/carers or medical personnel At all times during treatment, infection control procedures need to be adhered to eg., gloves to be worn, isolate children if needed All first aid treatment must be recorded as per Workplace Health and Safety and Catholic Insurance guidelines First Aid personnel must respect the confidential nature of any information provided during the course of the treatment Due to the possible transmission of Blood Born Viruses (BBV) the following precautions should be observed by the person(s) rendering first aid: A supply of disposable gloves should always be available, used and disposed of appropriately Avoid contact with blood. If contact occurs ensure area is washed thoroughly, using soap Gloves must be worn when handling waste that has been contaminated by with body substances eg. bandages, bloodstained items. All waste material that is contaminated with blood or body fluids should be placed in a plastic bag, tied shut and placed in a waste bin for disposal All blood and or body fluid spills needs to be cleaned up immediately All equipment in First Aid kits needs to be maintained and cleaned regularly by the designated First Aid Officer. Equipment used must be cleaned thoroughly immediately after use, before being returned to Kit Every First Aid Kit is to include a facemask, for use in CPR The First Aid Kit will accompany the students on sporting events, excursions etc.

4 As part of a normal Health Curriculum, all students should be taught basic first aid procedures for attending to minor injuries to themselves and others. Such procedures would include knowing how to: Cleanse a wound of dirt and blood Apply a dressing Clean up and dispose of waste appropriately. General Hygiene standards need to be maintained throughout the school. These include: Mouthpieces from musical instruments should be washed and cleaned thoroughly after each use. Crockery and eating utensils must be cleaned and dried and not left soaking. The use of shared hand towels is to be discouraged. Use of paper toweling or hand dryers is the preferred option. Staff involved in toileting children or caring for handicapped students must wear disposable gloves when contact with blood and/or body fluid is anticipated. They must wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water after removing and disposing of gloves. First Aid Consent for Excursions Parents are requested to sign and complete medical consent forms before the children go on excursions. First Aid Facilities: First Aid Kits The contents of the first aid kits should be appropriate for the types of injuries likely to occur in the school workplace. A nominated first aid personnel should ensure that the contents are kept within the use by dates; easily accessible; replenished promptly; student medication is kept in a secure place and the contents of first aid kits are used for only administering first aid. First Aid room or area The school has a designated area for a sick bay or a first aid room. Treatment of Asthma: The treatment of Asthma shall be carried out in accordance with the Department of Health Guidelines, and recorded in the Sick Bay Record Book. An outline of the guidelines for treatment of Asthma shall be kept in the Sick Bay room. A list of asthma sufferers shall be included in the Medical Register of the students, and be updated each year or as required. Refer to the Asthma Policy. References:
