2 Directions: You are going to read the story The One in the Middle is the Green Kangaroo by Judy Bloom. As you read you will answer questions about to the story. Remember to include details and examples from the story as you answer the questions. Some words you need to know as you read. Kangaroo- a large animal that lives in Australia and can jump long distances Costume- an outfit or disguise worn by actors in a play Practice- to do something over and over until you are good at it Middle- to be placed between two things 2

3 Third Grade (Level M) The One in the Middle Is the Green Kangaroo by Judy Blume Chapter One Freddy Dissel had two problems. One was his brother Mike. The other was his sister Ellen. Freddy was the middle child. He did not like being in the middle, but there was not a thing he could do about it. Illustration A When Mike got new clothes, his old clothes went to Freddy. They fit Freddy just fine. 3

4 Freddy had his own room, but when Ellen was born, she got Freddy s room. Freddy moved in with Mike. Mom and dad said, It is the boy s room. Not fair, said Freddy. Freddy wanted to play with Mike and his friends. Mike said, Get out of the way, kid! So Freddy played with Ellen and she messed up all of his toys. Freddy got mad and pushed her. Ellen cried. Freddy Dissel! Mom yelled. You can not be mean to Ellen. She is just a baby! Freddy did not think Ellen looked or talked like a baby. She also goes to preschool school! Some baby! Freddy feels things will not get better. He will always be a great big middle nothing! What challenge or problem does Freddy face in chapter 1? 5 Chapter Two One day Freddy heard of a school play. Mike was not in a play. Ellen was not in a play. This was special. Freddy could be special. Freddy wanted to be in the play. Two days later he told his teacher. He said, Ms. Gum, I want to be in the school play. Ms. Gum said, You can not Freddy. The play is done by the big boys and girls, in 5 th and 6 th grade. Freddy was sad. Not fair! he said. Wait, Freddy, Ms. Gum called. I will talk to Ms. Mat. She is in charge of the play. I will see if they need 2 nd graders to help. Ms. Gum told Freddy that Ms. Mat needed a student to play a special part. Ms. Gum said, Go to the gym after school. Maybe you will get the part. Great! Freddy yelled. After school Freddy went to the gym. He went up to Ms. Mat. He said, I want to be in the play. Ms. Mat told him to go up on the stage and say that -- in a loud voice. I AM FREDDY, he yelled. I WANT TO BE IN THE PLAY. 5

6 Based on what you have read so far, what do you think will happen to Freddy next? Give examples from the story to support your answer. (RL.3.1) I think Freddy will Good, Ms. Matson called. Now then Freddy, can you jump? because Good, Ms. Mat said. Freddy, can you jump? Yes, he can jump! He was in 2nd grade! So he jumped. He jumped big jumps and little jumps. When he was done Ms. Mat clapped. She said, You will be good as the Green Kangaroo, Freddy. It is a very special part. Freddy did not tell his family about the play until dinner. Then he said, Guess what? Guess what I am going to be? They were busy eating. No one looked at Freddy. I am going to be in the school play, Freddy said. I am going to be the Green Kangaroo! 6

7 Freddy s family stopped eating! Freddy sat there and smiled. What did you say? Mike asked. I said I am going to be in the school play. I said I am going to be the Green Kangaroo! No way, Mike yelled. Why did they pick you? I can jump, Freddy said. And, I can talk loud. Dad said, Freddy, I think it is great you are in the play. Mom said, We are proud of you, Freddy. Ellen said. Green Kangaroo! Yes, Freddy said. Just me. The only Green Kangaroo in the play. Describe how Freddy is feeling at the end of chapter 2? Why does Freddy feel this way? (RL.3.3) Freddy felt different in chapter one because Chapter Three The next two weeks were busy. Freddy had to practice a lot. He practiced on the stage. He practiced at home. He did kangaroo jumps on his bed. At night he dreamed of Green Kangaroos. The day of the play came. His family and some neighbors were going to the play. Freddy was going to school. Mom hugged Freddy and said, We will be there for you, Green Kangaroo, After lunch Ms. Gum told Freddy, Time to go. Time to get into your costume. Ms. Gum wished him good luck. She said, The class will be in the second row. 8

9 Freddy went to Ms. Mat s room. Ms. Mat helped Freddy into his costume. Ms. Mat put green dots on his face. He was green all over. He even had green feet. He looked in the mirror. He felt like a Green Kangaroo. It was time for the play. Freddy waited with the big boys and girls. They smiled at him. He tried to smile back. But the smile did not come. His heart beat fast. His tummy hurt. He felt funny. Ms. Mat went to him and said, Go ahead, Freddy. He jumped out on stage. He looked at the crowd. It was very quiet. He felt his heart beat. He saw Mom and Dad. He saw Ellen. He saw Mike, his teacher and his class. They were all there. They were all in the middle of the crowd. Freddy was not in the middle. He was alone up on the stage. He had a job to do. He had to be the Green Kangaroo. Freddy smiled a big smile. He felt good. HELLO EVERYONE, Freddy said. I AM THE GREEN KANGAROO. WELCOME. Freddy did big and little jumps. Every few minutes the 5th and 6th graders would say, And who are you? Freddy jumped and said. Me? I am the Green Kangaroo! It was fun. When he said it, the crowd laughed. It was a funny play. When the play was over the students on the stage took a bow. Ms. Mat came out and said, A special thank you to our 2 nd 9

10 grader, Freddy Dissel. He played the Green Kangaroo. Freddy jumped to the middle of the stage. All the people clapped. Illustration B Chapter Four After the play, Freddy did not care about getting Mike s clothes. He did not care about sharing a room. He did not care that Ellen was small and cute. He did not care about being the one in the middle. He felt great just being Freddy Dissel. The message the author wants us to learn is, you should be happy to be who you are.
