1 Open Water: In pen water there are n lanes rpes, walls, edges r pl flrs; ften pen water envirnments becme deep very quickly. Open water envirnments are impacted by envirnmental cnditins that can change suddenly, fr example tides, wind, rain, extreme cld, heat, flds, thunder and lightning. AUSTSWIM teachers must ensure students gain knwledge, skill and understanding thrugh lessn experiences that simulate (within safe and practical applicatin) pen water envirnments. Activity Suggestins While giving instructin, crrectin and feedback the AUSTSWIM teacher challenges students tread water rather than hlding nt the pl edge r hang ff lane rpes Simulate pen water by encuraging students t turn at the end f each lap withut pushing ff frm the pl wall r putting feet t pl flr. The purpse f these activities is t: Encurage students t experience hw hard and tiring it is t mve frm hrizntal prpulsin t vertical stillness and back again t hrizntal prpulsin withut the aid f pl walls, lane rpes and the pl flr Enhance endurance, bdy balance and rtatin skills Prvide pprtunity fr students t gain knwledge and understanding f the strength and endurance required in pen water situatins T explre the use f flatatin aids in energy cnservatin The ultimate aim is fr students t be able t maintain buyancy fr the entire lessn; never hlding a wall, tuching the pl flr r lane rpe. A large and diverse range f fltatin aids must be available fr students t use fr rest as and when they tire during the lessn. Extensin Create cmbinatins and sequences fr students that: Encurage them t think, remember and decide Create interest and reduce bredm Utilise a range f bdy psitins, knwn skills and thse being learnt r refined. Here are sme examples that can be cmbined with whatever the current teaching element is, distance and cmplexity is adjusted t suit student cmpetency and readiness. Using a flating mat away frm the edge f the pl have students safely fall ff the mat int the water, then climb back n and paddle t the edge as a team.

3 Extensin: Students perfrm a stride entry, and practice the current learning element, at sme pint in the lessns a series f flatatin aids (enugh fr half the students) are thrwn/put int the teaching area, students as they near the flatatin aids are encuraged t grasp them and then help thse students wh dn t have ne. When students reach the edge they all climb ut ver the pl wall.
