1 A Cafeteria to Classroom Challenge 1 Grades: K-2 Orange/Yellow Red Blue/Purple Green The Challenge: Power up your body each week by eating healthy fruits and vegetables! The Power Food Kids posters, will teach you which body parts are affected by eating your colors. Using the weekly body tracker, track which fruits and veggies you eat by coloring the body part it supports. Can you become a Power Food Kid? Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Adam H. Putnam, Commissioner
2 A Cafeteria to Classroom Challenge: Teacher s Guide 2 TEACHER S GUIDE This science-based challenge is designed for students in grades K-2. Use the Nutrislice app to help students review what is served in the lunchroom and to select meals with the necessary fruits and vegetables to assist with each challenge. The challenge and activities align to the following Florida Standards: SC.K.L.14.1, SC.K.P.8.Inq1 SC.1.N.1.2, SC.N.1.3, SC.1.L.14.1 SC.2.N.1.5, SC2.L.14.1 Challenge Components: Learn about the challenge using the About the Challenge page. (Page 1) Students track the fruits and vegetables they eat using the My Body Tracker handout. (Page 3) Students and teacher complete the Who am I? guessing game to learn more about different fruits and vegetables. (Page 4) Using the Mini Lab, students use their five senses to explore and differentiate between common fruits and vegetables. (Page 5) Challenge Objectives: Encourage students to use their five senses to explore the world. Identify and locate different parts of the human body. Allow students to identify and taste different fruits and vegetables. Bring it to the Classroom! Lesson Plan (Grades K-2) Standard: SC.1.L.14.1, SC.1.N.1.2 Materials: Five different fruits, paper bag, knife to cut fruit, wipes for hands. Objective: Students will use their five senses to investigate the unique characteristics of different fruits. Vocabulary: Seed Opening: What is your favorite fruit or vegetable? Teacher creates a T-chart to document students choices. Teacher Will: For this lesson, students will use their five senses to predict which fruit is in front of them. Review the five senses by having students stand and show, or point, to the body part responsible for each sense hand, mouth, eyes, ears and nose. The teacher will set up five different stations around the room, each corresponding to a different sense. Students will visit each station making predictions about which fruit is at each. For grades 1 and 2, have students record their observations and predictions. Use the Healthy Body Challenge mini lab to record observations. Station 1: Sight students are presented with different seeds from fruit and have to guess to which fruit it belongs. Station 2: Touch a fruit is placed in a paper bag, and students must feel to guess what it is. To make it more difficult, cut the fruit into pieces. Station 3: Sound students will close their eyes, drop a fruit on the table and listen to the sound it makes. Can they predict which fruit it is based on sound alone? Station 4: Taste test Students guess what the fruit is based on its taste. Station 5: Smell students smell a piece of fruit and guess what it is. Students Will: Travel to each station and make a prediction. Record observations if age appropriate. Closing: Debrief each station and talk about what influenced students predictions. Check out our website for additional lesson plans. Key: Grapes, Celery, Red Bell Pepper, Grapefruit Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Adam H. Putnam, Commissioner

4 A Cafeteria to Classroom Challenge: Activity Sheet 4 WHO AM I? Can you guess which fruit or vegetable each Power Food Kid describes? I am a fruit that is purple in color but also comes in red and green. Sometimes I have seeds and sometimes I do not. I come in a bunch and taste a little sour and a little sweet. Who am I? I am a healthy, light green vegetable. I come in stalks. I am leafy at the top and smooth at the bottom. I make a popular snack called ants on a log when spread with peanut butter and sprinkled with raisins. Who am I? I am a citrus fruit that is grown throughout central and southern Florida. I am round, yellow or pink on the outside, dark pink/red on the inside and have a bitter taste! I am bigger than an orange but smaller than a watermelon. Who am I? Yum! I am a red vegetable but I also come in yellow, green and orange varieties. Sometimes I am spicy, but this type is sweet. The longer I stay on the plant, the riper and sweeter I become. I make a great snack when paired with some hummus. Who am I?
