1 COLLIN COLLEGE COURSE SYLLABUS COURSE INFORMATION COURSE NUMBER: ITSY 2300 COURSE TITLE: OPERATING SYSTEM SECURITY COURSE DESCRIPTION: Safeguard computer operating systems by demonstrating server support skills and designing and implementing a security system. Identify security threats and monitor network security implementations. Use best practices to configure operating systems to industry security standards. COURSE CREDIT HOURS: 3 Lecture Hours: 2 Lab Hours: 2 PREREQUISITE: Any ITCC, ITMC, ITMT, or ITNW course or consent of the Program Director. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to do the following: 1. Identify network security risks, security design, and monitoring solutions 2. Identify sources of computer threats, evaluate potential practices, tools, and technologies to protect individual network systems 3. Establish and sustain an operating system security plan utilizing systems and application security tools 4. Implement procedures to secure and monitor audit logs and set system administrator alerts 5. Develop an organizational operating system security plan that provides for periodic reviews of security policies, procedures, authorized users list, and software update patches. Classroom: H-134, Heritage Hall, Preston Ridge Campus Class Times: 6 9:50 PM Monday and Wednesday nights Course Delivery Method: The class will be presented in a traditional face to face classroom environment. Lecture will be on Wednesdays and labs on Mondays. Student participation and interaction is expected. The student will complete all labs, assignments, quizzes, and the final comprehensive exam. 3 ITSY 2300 Lab Manual Hands-On Information Security Lab Manual, 3rd Edition Whitman/Mattord ISBN-10: ISBN-13: pages 2011 Please make sure you buy the above editions. COURSE REQUIREMENTS: 1. Students will study their hardcopy textbook materials and review the labs before class. 2. Students will complete the laboratory exercises in the lab at PRC on designated dates. 3. Students will listen to lectures over the class material. 4. The final exam will be on Wednesday October 16, 2013 at 6 PM in RM H-134 of PRC. COURSE GRADING REQUIREMENT DEADLINES: Credit will be given for ONLY those tests, exams, projects, et al, completed and turned in on or before the scheduled deadlines as directed by your instructor. The instructor may provide direction either verbally or by written schedule which appears in this syllabus, or a combination of the two. No credit will be given for late delivery unless prior arrangement has been communicated with the instructor, usually during a prior class or via Collin College . 4 You are expected to participate in all class discussions, labs and assignments. If at any
5 time you wish to drop this course, or to withdraw from the college, please initiate that action yourself. Do not assume that if you stop attending class you will be automatically dropped. Students are responsible for completing all assignments and tests on time. If a student fails to complete class assignments and quizzes/exams, a zero will be entered in the grade book for that assignment/quiz unless prior arrangement (typicallyin a prevous class or via ) has been made with the instructor. I have found in the past that students will sometimes drop a course when help is available. If you are considering withdrawing from this course, please take some time to discuss your concerns with me. Things may not be as bad as you think they are and we may be able to come to some arrangement which will allow you to successfully complete the course requirements. However, you must contact me as soon as possible. Please do not wait until the last minute before the drop date deadline to contact me.
