Agenda Presentation on Solid State Devices Laptop Boot Timing Test with a Hard Disk Clone the Hard Disk Contents to an SSD Laptop timing Test with an SSD Q&A

Hard Drive Characteristics Hard drive (HDD) is a metal platter with a magnetic coating that stores your data. A read/write head on an arm accesses the data while the platters are spinning. A read or write requires time for moving the head to the desired track (seek) and waiting for the desired record to rotate under the read/write head (latency).

SSD Characteristics An SSD performs functionally like a hard drive. Data is stored on flash memory chips that are installed in a box that's sized and wired to substitute for a laptop or desktop's hard drive. These flash memory chips are of a different type than is used in USB thumb drives, and are typically faster, more expensive and more reliable. There is no seek time or rotational latency time for a read or write.

Comparison HDD vs SSD Here s and example of four random reads on a disk vs. the same reads on an SSD. For the hard disk Seek time is 9-12ms for each read and 4-5ms for latency or best case 52ms For the SSD No seek time and <1ms latency for all four reads SSD are much much faster.

Effective Speed An SSD-equipped PC will boot in less than a minute, and often in seconds. A hard drive requires time to speed up to operating specs, and will continue to be much slower than an SSD during normal use. A PC with an SSD boots faster, launches and runs apps faster, and transfers files faster. What s Not to Like??

Price SSDs are more expensive than hard drives in terms of dollar per gigabyte. A 1TB internal 2.5-inch hard drive costs about $50, but an SSD of the same capacity and form factor starts at $220. That translates into 5 cents per gigabyte for the hard drive and 22 cents per gigabyte for the SSD. Since hard drives use older, more established technology, they will remain less expensive for some time.

Fragmentation On a hard drive, segments of large files can become scattered around the disk platter, causing the drive to have to make many separate reads, moving the heads and waiting for rotation on each one, in order to read a file. This can severely slow down performance. This is called fragmentation. SSDs do not take time to move the heads or wait for rotation to make a read so fragmentation is not a problem.

Durability An SSD has no moving parts, so it is more likely to not be damaged in the event that you drop your laptop or your system is shaken while it's operating. Hard drives read/write heads fly over the drive platter at a distance of a few nanometers when they are in operation. This makes disk drives very vulnerable to damage if dropped or shaken. If you're rough on your equipment, an SSD is recommended.

Form Factors Because hard drives rely on spinning platters, there is a limit to how small they can be manufactured. SSDs have no such limitation, so they can continue to shrink as time goes on. SSDs are available in 2.5-inch laptop drive-sized boxes, but that's only for convenience. As SSDs become less costly, you'll see the adoption of SSDs skyrocket.

Noise Even the quietest hard drive will emit a bit of noise when it is in use from the drive spinning or the read arm moving back and forth. Faster hard drives will make more noise than slower ones. SSDs make virtually no noise at all, since they're non-mechanical.

Longevity SSDs wear out over time since each cell in a flash memory bank can be written and erased a limited number of times. SSD technology optimizes these read/write cycles so that in normal use the drive will last as long or longer than a standard disk drive. Hard drives will wear out from constant use as well, since they use physical recording methods. Longevity is probably a wash when it's separated from travel and ruggedness concerns.

Why Upgrade The most effective upgrade that you can do to a laptop or a desktop is to replace the main disk drive with an SSD. The costs are minimal as compared with a new system purchase. The speed-up obtained is exceptional. Its like having a new computer. The upgrade is fairly simple to perform.

SSD Sizing You ll need an SSD large enough to hold your system and data files and also leave some space for growth. To get a rough idea of the required SSD size, navigate to your C: drive, right click and select properties. The used and free space will be displayed. Currently SSDs come in 120GB, 250GB, 500GB, 1TB and 2TB sizes

Migration Steps Hook up the SSD to your computer via internal wiring or USB port. Use special software such as Acronis or Easeus Todo Backup to Clone your hard disk to the SSD. Remove the HDD and install the SSD. Boot up and enjoy!!!

Warnings! Warnings! If you are putting an SSD into a laptop, make sure you can get to the disk drive to replace it. You must be on Windows 7, 8 or 10 to use an SSD safely. Windows 10 is preferred. On a desktop, you will need to purchase a mounting bracket to fit the 2.5 inch SSD into a 3.5 inch disk bay. New SSD technology using PCI Card interfaces is much faster than disk drive replacement SSDs

Next Steps Go to Download the Crucial System Scanner It will analyze your system's hardware and provide a list of compatible SSD upgrades Contact us at computerclubssd@gmail.com for help with your install and conversion
