1 BUSINESS PROCESS MANAGEMENT (BADM 375 SUMMER II) Course Information Instructor: Dr. Taner Pirim Course Overview: This online course is an introduction to the fundamental aspects of business process management, which involves insuring that the product or service is of high quality, planning and controlling the flow of parts or customers, and timely distribution of the finished goods or services. Business process has become an increasingly critical managerial issue in the presence of the recent advancements in information technology, more frequent introduction of new products, shorter product life cycle and more sophisticated and quality conscious consumers when competing in the global markets. Course Objectives: To describe an operating system or a business process and how it can be used as a competitive advantage in a variety of manufacturing and service organizations To develop skills in analyzing operating processes, assessing economic trade-offs, and defining planning and control mechanisms To introduce concepts and techniques related to the design, planning, control, and improvement of inventory and supply chain management Course Materials: Compass will be the main platform to access all lecture videos, course-related activities, and announcements. Many assignments, quizzes and activities require access to McGraw-Hill Connect (read section McGraw-Hill Connect below). Supplemental articles may also be posted on each weekly module on the course web site. The following textbook is required and the e-book version of the textbook comes with McGraw-Hill Connect Subscription. William J. Stevenson, Operations Management, 12 th Edition, McGraw-Hill/Irwin. (E-book version is included in McGraw-Hill Connect Service, hence there is no need to purchase hardcopy version unless you prefer to) 1

2 McGraw-Hill Connect: McGraw-Hill s Connect is a web-based assignment and assessment solution required for this course. The cost for Connect access including e-book is approximately $125 and it can be purchased online. The first time you attempt to access the first assignment on Connect (i.e. when you first click Quiz# 1 ) you will be prompted to register. Follow the screen instruction to complete the registration and payment process. It is important that you: Register as soon as the course begins, the first assignment on Connect is due on 6/21. The free trial will not be sufficient to get you through the entire semester. When it expires you will still need to purchase the access code at full price. If you have any issues while registering or using Connect, please contact McGraw-Hill s Customer Experience team through or at The tech support team may ask for the course web address, which is: To avoid problems related to unexpected technical issues, you are advised not to wait until the last moment to complete assignments. Responsibilities of Students: A typical week begins on Mondays and ends Sundays at midnight CDT The weekly agenda will highlight the student responsibilities and assignment due dates for the week. Check Compass on a regular basis for complete details Watch the lecture early in the week. These videos are key to your learning throughout the course Note that all deadlines will be strictly enforced, regardless of technical problems, etc. You will have plenty of time to complete the assignments so please DO NOT wait until the last minute. If you wait until the deadline, issues such as illness or problems with the internet connection might make it impossible for you to complete the assignments. Grading: A letter grade for the course will be assigned based on a relative scale applying the following weights: Quizzes 40% Homework 30% Final Exam 30% Total 100% 2

3 Quiz: Seven quizzes will be given during the course which are to be done individually. Your lowest score will be dropped so only six will count toward your grade. Quiz questions are designed to test all or part of the materials introduced in the week. You must complete all questions in a single attempt (each quiz should take maximum of 45 minutes or less to complete). All quizzes require access to McGraw-Hill Connect. You will have full access to your notes taken during the class for the quiz as well as the e-book. You are also responsible to read all the related chapters to the subjects we will cover each week. Homework: There will be a total of seven homework which are to be done individually. Your lowest score will be dropped so only six will count toward your grade. Homework allows you to apply concepts and tools learned in the lectures, and should help prepare you for exam problems. Homework may involve all, or part of, materials introduced in the week. Solutions will be posted on Compass immediately after the due date/time; no late work will be considered under any circumstances. Final Exam: Final exam is a comprehensive, open-note test to be done individually. It will be available on 8/8, 0:00 am CDT and due the same day before midnight (8/8, 11:59 pm CDT). The emphasis will be on the qualitative and quantitative aspects of the course material. More details of the exam will be posted on the Compass website. Please check the exam schedule in this syllabus and inform me as soon as possible if you have a scheduling conflict. No make-up exam will be given if you do not make an arrangement with me in advance. Student Roster: Each student is required to complete Class Roster under Course Communication section. You are required to add a wiki page to this roster with a little information about yourself. Instructions for how to do this assignment and a link to Wiki can be found in the Orientation section. Re-grading: In line with Grading Guidelines for the UIUC College of Business, the process of assigning of grades is intended be one of unbiased evaluation. This means that students are encour- aged to respect the integrity and authority of the professors grading system and discouraged from pursuing arbitrary challenges to it. If a student feels that an inadvertent error has been made in the grading of an individual assignment or in assessing an overall course grade, a request to have that the grade be reevaluated may be submitted. Students should submit such requests in writing to the professor within 7 days of receiving the grade, including a brief written statement of why he or she believes that an error in grading has been made. Students with extenuating circumstances which require them to receive a certain grade or maintain a particular GPA (e.g., graduation, loss of a scholarship, University probation or suspension, loss of a job offer, revocation of student Visa, etc.) need to realize that they are responsible for working hard to achieve the needed class grade. 3
