3 Moriyama RAIC International Prize 1. Intent Raymond Moriyama FRAIC, the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) and the RAIC Foundation have created this prize to raise the international stature of the RAIC and the Canadian architectural profession, and to encourage Canadian architects to aspire to international excellence. Raymond Moriyama s vision for this award is based on his conviction that great architecture transforms society by promoting humanistic values of social justice, respect, equality and inclusiveness, and by creating environments for the well-being of all people. It is hoped that the Moriyama RAIC International Prize will be regarded as one of the world s most prestigious international prizes in architecture. 2. The Prize The Moriyama RAIC International Prize will be awarded every two years. It will consist of a monetary award of CAD $100,000 and a handcrafted sculpture designed by internationally renowned Canadian designer Wei Yew. Every edition of the prize will feature a new piece by Wei Yew, each based on a separate and unique interpretation of the Canadian landscape. The prize is awarded to an architect, team of architects, or architect-led collaboration, based anywhere in the world, in recognition of a single work of architecture that is judged to be transformative within its societal context and expressive of the humanistic values of justice, respect, equality and inclusiveness. Three finalists will be identified in an open, juried selection process, and invited to attend a formal gala where the Moriyama RAIC International Prize winner will be announced and the prize presented. The inaugural gala will take place in Toronto on October 11,

4 3. Eligibility The competition is open to all architects, irrespective of nationality and location. Any architect, team of architects, or architect-led collaboration is invited to submit a building or a related group of buildings that has been completed and occupied for at least two years prior to the entry deadline of 5 pm EDT, August 1, Please note that candidates are limited to a single submission per award cycle. No more than one prize shall be awarded in any two-year period. The jury reserves the right not to award the prize should a deserving recipient not be identified. 4. Criteria The intention of this award program is to celebrate a single work of architecture that is transformative, inspired as well as inspiring, and emblematic of the humanistic values of justice, respect, equality and inclusiveness. The jury will consider a range of criteria in the evaluation of submissions, including : The transformational nature of the project The project s expression and support of humanistic values Relationship to social, cultural and political contexts Capacity of the project to stimulate, engage and delight users and visitors Sense of endurance and timelessness Innovation and effectiveness in the resolution of formal, technical and functional issues Response to site and climate Attention to building performance and sustainable design Quality of detail design and craftsmanship in execution Evidence of client and/or user satisfaction 4

5 5. Submission requirements Entries may be submitted by an architect, a team of architects, or an architect-led collaboration. Submissions shall be formatted as a maximum 30-page 8½ by 11 document, in either portrait or landscape orientation. The limit of 30 pages does not include the covers or the completed application form. If the submission includes text in any language other than English or French, translations in English or French must be provided. Submissions should include the following information, in the order presented below: Completed application form A biography of the applicant(s) A statement by the applicant describing the project and presenting its strengths in relation to the Moriyama RAIC International Prize Site plans, photographs and other documentation that describe the location and explain the organization of the site and surrounding context of the project Images, plans, sections, elevations and other documentation sufficient to explain the project Environmental and energy performance data Letters of reference Evidence of community support for the project References to awards, publications and other forms of recognition of the project A web link to a high-resolution video that describes the project; in addition to presenting the project, the video may include interviews, testimonials or other material that enhances understanding and appreciation of the work. The total run time may not exceed 5 minutes. 5

6 Submissions must clearly identify the following: Online links and software requirements to enable access to referenced documents, where appropriate The name of the primary contact person, and his or her and telephone coordinates There will be a registration fee of CAD $500 per submission. The registration fee must be paid online by the deadline of 5 pm EDT, August 1, 2014, according to instructions that will be posted on this website. Each submission shall be delivered as a PDF attachment to an with the subject header Moriyama RAIC International Prize Submission, or uploaded to a designated website according to instructions that will be posted on this website, by the deadline of 5 pm EDT, August 1, Questions may be addressed to the RAIC office at , or via to moriyamaprize@raic.org and professionaladvisor@raic.org, before 5 pm EDT, July 25, Jury The Professional Advisor and the RAIC Awards Committee shall appoint a jury of at least five (5) persons. The composition of the jury and the names of the jurors will normally be announced with the publication of the formal call for submissions. The jury shall include: the Chancellor of the College of Fellows, who shall act as Chair at least one recipient of the RAIC Gold Medal at least one member-at-large drawn from the Canadian architectural profession at least one member-at-large drawn from the international architectural community at the discretion of the Professional Advisor and the RAIC Awards Committee, a member of the public selected for his or her particular knowledge and experience. 6

7 Each member of the jury will be required to sign an acknowledgement of these, a confidentiality agreement and, if appropriate, a conflict-of-interest declaration. The Professional Advisor and the RAIC office will prepare an information package for the members of the jury. The jury will hold one or more face-toface meetings to review submissions, deliberate and select a final shortlist of three candidates for the Prize. If deemed necessary, the Professional Advisor may request additional information from the shortlisted Moriyama RAIC International Prize candidates. If the award winner cannot be identified by consensus, the following voting procedure will be used to select the recipient. First Ballot: Second Ballot: Vote for one candidate; the candidate with the fewest votes drops out. Vote for one candidate; the candidate with the majority wins. 7. Professional Advisor In accordance with its general rules and regulations regarding International Competitions, the RAIC will engage a Professional Advisor to administer the selection process in each year that the prize and student scholarships are awarded. The name of the Professional Advisor will be announced prior to, or at the same time as, the publication of the composition of the jury. 7

8 8. Schedule The deadline for submission of all materials is 5pm, EDT, August 1, The three shortlisted finalists will be notified by September 15, The awards presentation will take place at the Moriyama RAIC gala celebration on October 11, 2014 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. 8

9 Moriyama RAIC Student Scholarships 1. Intent The Moriyama RAIC Student Scholarships are three scholarships awarded in conjunction with the Moriyama RAIC International Prize. Raymond Moriyama FRAIC, the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) and the RAIC Foundation have created these awards to raise the international stature of the RAIC and the Canadian architectural profession, and to encourage Canadian architects to aspire to international excellence. Eligibility The Moriyama RAIC Student Scholarships program is open to any student registered full-time in a Canadian university architecture program in the academic year. Three scholarships will be awarded, each including a monetary prize of CAD $5,000, and each named in honour of one of the three finalists shortlisted for the Moriyama RAIC International Prize. No more than three scholarships shall be awarded in any two-year period. The jury reserves the right to award fewer than three scholarships should deserving recipients not be identified. 3. Submission requirements The award of the Scholarships will be based on individual student submissions that address a specific topic. For the inaugural 2014 cycle, the topic is based on the question: Why do I want to be an architect? 9

10 Submissions should be formatted as an 8½ by 11 document, in either portrait or landscape orientation. Each submission should include an original essay, not to exceed 1,000 words in length, illustrated with images of a single design project executed by the applicant at any point in his or her academic career. Illustrations should be used by the applicant to complement and clarify ideas explored in the text. Applicants are referred to the words of Canadian architect Arthur Erickson who, seeing colour photographs of Frank Lloyd Wright s Taliesin West for the first time as a young man, said: If an architect can do this, I m going to go into architecture. Submissions should also include a curriculum vitae and evidence of the applicant s student status. 4. Criteria for evaluation Submissions will be evaluated on the applicant s expression of vision and aspiration, and on the strength of personal conviction. 5.
