The curriculum is designed to prepare and challenge young people in a fast-developing global environment. We aim to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who will become creative and independent contributors and leaders in this global community of the 21st century. Opening Minds and Opportunities Our dedication to developing the individual is reflected in our after-school activities. 4 Kindergarten and Primary School The experiences of early childhood can shape a child s future. By the time this period is over, children will have formed conceptions of the world around them. Kindergarten helps children acquire essential knowledge, concepts, skills, attitudes and actions that will affect their personal, social and future development, their relationships and their future achievement. The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme is founded on the following aspirations for children: To grow up as competent and confident learners and communicators, healthy in mind, body and spirit, secure in their sense of belonging and in the knowledge that they make a valued contribution to society. ACG International School Jakarta s Kindergarten encourages children to see learning as both enjoyable and useful and it provides a foundation for future intellectual, social and physical development. There is a strong emphasis on providing a stimulating and engaging learning environment, oral language development and opportunities for thinking, problem-solving and experimenting. The programme also includes opportunities for self-expression and discovery. The learning activities at this early age are designed to build on the children s natural curiosity and inquiry. In addition to the key learning areas of Language, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies, students participate in specialist classes, including Physical Education, Swimming and Music. Experienced teachers and teaching assistants ensure that children have a positive start to learning. ACG International School Jakarta is an Authorized IB World School for the Primary Years Programme (IB PYP). The curriculum has been developed and implemented from Kindergarten to Year 6. Through the IB PYP philosophy, the School is considered to be a community of learners. The IB PYP combines both concept-driven and skills-based learning and is designed for the international environment. The IB PYP provides a strong framework for Language, Mathematics, Social Studies and Science skills. It focuses on the total growth of the developing child, encompassing social, physical, emotional and cultural needs in addition to academic development. The PYP draws on research and best practice from a range of national systems with a wealth of knowledge and experience from international schools to create a relevant, engaging, challenging and significant educational framework for all children. The IB PYP aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. IB Learner Profile Aims of the IB PYP are expressed as a series of desired attributes and dispositions that characterise successful students. IB learners strive to be: n Inquirers n Knowledgeable n Thinkers n Principled n Open-minded n Communicators n Caring n Risk-takers n Balanced n Reflective

5 Kindergarten to Year 6 The Essential Elements of the Curriculum The diagram below illustrates the organisation of our curriculum based around the student learner who is situated at the centre of the model as well as the subjects to be taught. At the centre of the diagram is the inquiring learner. Students should understand important concepts, develop a broad range of skills, adopt positive attitudes to learning and act responsibly, based on their learning. How we organise ourselves Sharing the planet Personal, social & physical education Actions Science & technology Languages Concepts Attitudes Who we are Skills Social studies Mathematics Where we are in place and time At the heart of the Primary Years Programme philosophy is a commitment to inquiry as an ideal vehicle for learning. These subject areas are guided by a series of organising themes that inquire into the following: n Who we are n How the world works n Sharing the planet n Where we are in place and time n How we express ourselves n How we organise ourselves Together these subject areas elicit ideas of local and global significance and reveal commonalities that all people share no matter what their backgrounds are or where they live. ACG International School Jakarta provides an excellent base for future development and learning. It is a stimulating and productive environment where the teamwork between teachers and students develops a positive work ethic and a lifelong love of learning. Students from Year 4 to Year 10 participate in the International Schools Assessment each February which evaluates their knowledge of Literacy and Numeracy comprehension. Each student receives an Individual Report Card which benchmarks them against international students at hundreds of schools across Asia. Arts How the world works How we express ourselves The six Primary Years Programme subject areas are: n Languages n Social Studies n The Arts n Mathematics n Science and Technology n Personal Social and Physical Education

6 Secondary School Years 7 to 11 Middle and Senior School The Middle School Years aim to extend the inquiry-based approach that the IB PYP offers while also preparing the students for the challenges and demands of the University of Cambridge International Lower secondary curriculum. In addition, we strive to make the programme relevant to our culturally diverse student body. Enthusiastic and highly skilled teachers ensure that students continue to build on their previous achievements. Classroom time is valued and used effectively. The teaching method ensures individual attention from teachers as well as the opportunity for all to participate fully in interactive class work, such as discussions and debates. Learning at ACG International School Jakarta is characterised by enjoyment and discovery. A clear focus on academic work teaches students that nothing of value is achieved without energy, commitment and effort. All students are challenged to set goals for themselves. Extension activities are in place to challenge, accelerate and enrich able students. The Student Learner Profile is continued and valued throughout secondary schooling. In the Middle School Years, the broad-based curriculum provides an excellent foundation for study at senior secondary levels. Year 9 students sit the international Checkpoint Examinations in Mathematics, English and Science. These examinations give an objective measure of student performance and are internationally benchmarked. A strong focus on language, literature and numeracy is a feature of the School. Well-equipped laboratories provide an ideal setting for stimulating science lessons and humanities subjects enable students to learn more about their world and the events that have shaped it. Information Technology is used extensively in all curriculum areas, while specialist teachers in Art, Music and Physical Education allow students to enjoy experiences that will last a lifetime. University of Cambridge International Examinations At senior level, ACG International School Jakarta offers the Cambridge International Examinations. The IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) is a two-year programme which begins in Year 10. Able students may sit IGCSE papers at the end of the first year. University of Cambridge International Examinations is one of the world s leading providers of international assessments. Cambridge International is part of Cambridge Assessment, which is a department of the world-renowned University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom.
