Elementary Level: Beginner ADJECTIVES Warm-up Activities Teaching Points Worksheets Extension Activities Word Search Quiz
Warm-up Activities For the Teacher: Being able to classify different parts of speech can help make life a lot easier for students when they tackle tricky grammar rules in the future. It is important to establish a strong foundation with the student s ability to identify adjectives. Warmer: Missing Letters Materials: None Time: min. Grouping: 2 Teams Procedure: 1. 1 student from each team will stand up and watch the teacher. 2. The teacher will write spaces on the board (1 space for each letter of an adjective the students will be guessing. The teacher thinks of an adjective (ie: big) and draws 3 lines on the board. 3. The teacher will slowly fill in the missing letters for big. The first student to put their hands on their head (to indicate they know the answer) and guess what the word is will earn a point for their team. 4. The teacher can award a bonus point if the student can say something that is big, (ie: and elephant). 5. Repeat until one of the teams earns 11 points (or 21 if you have a big class.) 6. Be sure to use simple adjectives the students will know ie; big, small, cute, tall, short, pretty, ugly, fast, slow, new, old, young, yummy, etc Possible Problems: Some students may shout out multiple answers, be sure to tell students that only the first word given will count as their answer, and then the other student will have a chance to give an answer.
Warm-up Activities Warmer: Finish the Sentence Materials: (Optional) Pieces of paper with simple sentences; ie: An elephant Time: min. Grouping: 3-4 Teams Procedure: 1. Have the teams sit in rows. The students at the front stand up and put their hands behind their backs. 2. The teacher will read a sentence and the first student to put their hands on their heads and finish that sentence with an appropriate adjective will get a point for their team. 3. After all the sentences have been used up, add up all the points to find out which is the winning team. Possible Problems: Some students may give an adjective that could fit the sentences, write an adjective on your pieces of paper and the students HAVE TO say that adjective. Essentially the students will be trying to guess your answers to the questions.
Teaching Points Presentation Points: Draw circles on the board and illicit examples from the students. If the student gets stuck, give them a word and ask them where it belongs. Try to give each student a chance to give at least 1 response. looks like big, small, pretty feels like tell you what a noun smells / tastes like sounds like quiet, noisy, scary acts like soft, smooth, rough yummy, yucky, delicious silly, funny, shy Practice Tips: Whether you are letting the students practice on their own, with text book exercises or with Dizzy Donald s worksheets, work together to make the work clearer for everyone. should be reviewed throughout the year. It s as easy as asking the students to identify the adjective(s) in any sentence they read.
Name: tell you what a noun looks like, smells like, tastes like, sounds like, or feels like. Part A: Look at the box below. There are 10 words. 5 of the words are nouns and 5 of the words are adjectives. Circle all 5 of the adjectives. dog small tree yummy happy soft girl noisy car school Part B: Read the instructions and circle the correct word. ex Circle the adjective that best describes an elephant. 1 Circle the adjective that best describes a giraffe. 2 Circle the adjective that best describes a cake. 3 Circle the adjective that best describes a car. sad small big baby short tall happy yummy big noisy slow fast sad Part C: Draw a line and match the adjectives that are opposite. (Tip: opposite means the words are different from one another, like yes and no ) big O tall O pretty O good O fast O noisy O O ugly O short O small O slow O quiet O bad
Name: tell you what a noun looks like, smells like, tastes like, sounds like, or feels like. Part A: Look at the noun. Unscramble the adjective that best fits that noun. (Tip: All the nouns start with the letter b. ) ex elephant 1 mouse 2 tree 3 airplane 4 butterfly 5 turtle g i b l l s m a l l t a t s a f y t t p r e w l s o big Part B: Circle the all the adjectives in each sentence. (Tip: There are 2 nouns in each sentence.) ex Dizzy Donald has a cute dog. 1 The tree is tall. 2 The grass is green. 3 That is a happy girl. 4 This is a little mouse.
Name: tell you what a noun looks like, smells like, tastes like, sounds like, or feels like. Part A: Look at the picture. Unscramble the sentences. (Tip: Follow the sentence pattern.) The NOUN is ADJECTIVE. ex house is The big baby The is sad is The fast dog tall is The tree frog The is green yummy are The pancakes The house is big. Part B: Read the adjectives. Write the name of a friend or family member who matches that adjective. nice cute tall pretty short old happy smart
Extension Exercises: Activities that are a fun way for you and your students to reenforce grammar points. Extension Exercise 1: Adjective Brainstorming Instructions: 1. Copy and handout the Adjective Brainstorming Worksheet. 2. Put the students into groups of 3-5. Each group should have 1 pencil, 1 eraser and 1 worksheet. 3. Read each section with the class and give the students 3 minutes (or longer if you like) to write down as many possible words as they can. 4. Repeat the above step for the rest of the sections. 5. At the end, review the Brainstorming by having the students write their answers on the board. The team that has the most correct words in each section will earn 1 point for each answer that fits. If a word does not belong in that section, they do not get a point for that word. Total up all the points from each section to get a total score. 6. The team that has earned the most points wins. 7. Ex: Section 1 4 letter adjectives Team 1 Team 2 Team 3 Team 4 slow ugly slow good fast tall ugly slow good good good tree fast tall (3 points (3 points) (5 points) (2 points) because tree doesn t count) Notes: Have students take turns being the writer for each section while others give ideas.
Brainstorming: Section 1: 4 Letter names: Section 2: to describe Animals Section 3: to describe people Section 4: that have only 1 vowel (a,e,i,o,u)
