2 Large scale production of chlorine has long been our core competence, and continues to be. But large scale production is not always feasible, which is why we are proud to announce a new breakthrough in the production of chlorine: small-scale chlorine production units, located at our customers manufacturing sites and remotely controlled by specialized AkzoNobel personnel. A new concept to meet customer demand: - sustainable and convenient The concept offers an ideal solution for certain applications and circumstances. The remote controlled chlorine units can be an alternative for chlorine transportation. And they can replace existing small plants that still use the outdated, environmentally disputable mercury electrolysis process, and which presently can not be economically converted with the existing technology. A reliable, safe and hassle-free supply As with traditional chlorine production, clients are assured of a continuous supply in a safe way. Safety is of outmost importance in a chlorine plant. This is why we have taken great care in the design of the electrolysis cells and all the other equipment. Furthermore the amount of chlorine in these units is limited, raising the overall safety profile of the site. On-site safety is actually higher thanks to a reduced need for storage and the absence of transport of chlorine. And Akzo Nobel takes all the operational work out of clients hands as we build and operate the installations, freeing up client s valuable resources for other activities. In short, the concept offers a reliable and safe supply of chlorine. Without hassle. Based on proven technology and competitively priced The small-scale chlorine plants have a maximum capa-city of 15,000 metric tons per annum. The installations are designed and produced using standardized engineering, which we have succeeded in down-scaling to maximize efficiency. The electrolysis cells are designed as skid-mounted modules by our partner, Uhdenora S.P.A. The other components that make up the installations are also modular, meaning that little construction activity is required at the site, just the assembly. All in all, the space required for the plant is comparable to about half a football field. We compensate the missing scale effect compared to a large plant by operating and steering a larger number of smaller units remotely by one organization. And thereby we realize the scale benefits across the units. The operational costs involved in the remote controlled chlorine plants are thus competitive. The remote controlled chlorine units can overcome environmental and economic restrictions and provide premium reliability and safety profiles. The new concept therefore meets customer demands for chlorine in a sustainable and convenient way. On the cover you see chlorine gas in equilibrium with its liquid phase the gas phase is green and the liquid phase is orange/yellowish. This is a rather extraordinary photo of chlorine gas in an electrolysis cell, made visible with help of an analytical instrument.

4 The pooling of our unique expertise has created a new milestone in chlorine production: the advent of dedicated and compact, safe and reliable production units built on the customer s site and yet operated remotely by the chlorine expert, AkzoNobel. AkzoNobel scores first in down-scaling chlorine production The concept offered by AkzoNobel Industrial Chemicals is economically viable thanks to advances in technology. And we produce vacuum salt suitable for application in small membrane installations in a way that is economically viable. Down-scaling chlorine production has thus become a reality thanks to the dedicated research and development by our engineers and our partners. The development of Remote Controlled Chlorine Production represents collaboration between AkzoNobel Industrial Chemicals and the engineering and construction companies Uhdenora and Uhde. The latter two companies have established a reputation for their knowhow in developing amongst others electrolysis cells. Taking the work out of your hands AkzoNobel Industrial Chemicals is fully responsible for the operation of the chlorine plant, including all inputs and outputs. There is no need for the customer to get involved in either the sourcing of salt or in the handling of the by-products such as caustic soda and hydrogen. While AkzoNobel takes responsibility for the smooth and reliable supply of chlorine at the client s site, client staff still needs to be thoroughly up to date with the health and safety aspects of the production.
