2 This week s theme: Life Changes This is what the children are learning this week: I know it is natural to be wary of change, and I can tell you why I know that all feelings, even uncomfortable ones, have a purpose and help us to respond in a certain way I know that children may have mixed feelings about going to secondary school I have strategies for managing change In class this week: The children have been talking together about changes that have happened in their lives so far and how feelings can be affected by change, or thinking about change. They have thought about how some changes can feel uncomfortable because they may appear to threaten our basic needs. They have talked about some of the anxieties that they may have about moving schools and thought about ways of resolving these. The overall theme of change will continue next week. Growing Up B : Chat Time Week 1 Life Changes For those times when change seems difficult. Coping With Change For those times when change seems difficult READY STEADY Are you calm enough to think clearly? Use your best calming down tricks. Think about: What s good about this change? What s going to stay the same? How long is this going to last? Do I need help with this? If so who from? What do I want to happen? What s my goal? GO Try out your idea Have I got to my goal? 3 Something to think about Change in life must and does happen. This can feel exciting, but sometimes scary. How we FEEL about the change will have some effect on how we cope with it. The stages of coping with change shown on the front page is a bit like the ready, steady, go at the start of a race. Think about trying out these different stages when something is changing or about to change in your family. Ex Prime Minister 1800s Optional activity In your family Chat Time you could imagine that your family writes for a problem page in a young people s magazine. You are sent the following letter: Dear problem page, My mum has just got a new job in Bristol and I really don t want to move. I will have to leave my school and the swimming club that I belong to. Next summer we are due to go to France with the club for a swimming competition. My dad isn t keen to leave either, as he will have to find a new job and leave his surfing club. Dad says that we must support mum as she has worked hard to get this job. My sister really wants to move as she plays hockey and there is a really good club in Bristol. I feel really scared about moving. I ve tried to talk to mum but all she says is that it will be OK. I am finding it hard to think that way at the moment. What do you think I should do? Don t look I am changing! Talk together about this letter and how the writer may feel. How would you reply? You may find it useful to use the Coping with Change picture on the front.

4 This week s theme: Hygiene and the Hairy Bits This is what the children are learning this week: I know that puberty happens to all of us, but at different times I am aware of changes that will happen to me at puberty and beyond I know that taking responsibility for myself is a key part of growing up I understand that boys and girls have to cope with different changes In class this week: The children have been learning about the changes that happen to boys and girls during puberty. Emotional and physical changes happen to everyone but some are specific to boys or girls, and everyone is different. They have also looked at how growing up means being more responsible for themselves and being able to talk about these changes without being silly. Growing Up B : Chat Time Week 2 Hygiene and the Hairy Bits One day I ll be a caterpillar! Change happens to ALL OF US! Look how I ve changed! Fly! You must be joking! What do you get if you cross a worm with a young goat? For sharing time together at home

5 Something to think about In continuing the theme of change we have been talking about how our bodies change as we grow up (puberty). These changes happen to ALL of us BUT at DIFFERENT times. Some changes are easy to cope with and others more difficult. One boy writes: One of the difficult things for me was that my armpits started to smell. I didn t know til my older brother told me. My mum was always telling me to wash but I never took much notice. I now use a deodorant and the other kids don t make comments anymore. The message here is: Optional activity In your Chat Time this week discuss the changes that happen during puberty to boys and girls. The time that these changes will happen is unknown. Girls and boys may get some clues about this by finding out how old mum or dad were when they went through these changes. The ages can be surprisingly similar. Use the grid below to jot down which changes happen to both boys and girls and which ones are different. Clue: Think about both physical and emotional changes. Your child may have brought home a leaflet on changes at puberty. Check this out together. Girls Both Boys It was useful to discuss the boy and girl leaflet and make comparisons A dirty kid

6 This week s theme: The Inside Story This is what the children are learning this week: I know the correct names for the male and female body parts I understand where eggs and sperm come from I know that making a baby is ideally part of a loving stable relationship In class this week: The children have been thinking about how change and growth at puberty is preparing their bodies to become parents one day. They have been sharing their ideas about what a loving stable relationship is, and why it is the ideal relationship in which to have and care for a baby. Growing Up B : Chat Time Week 3 The Inside Story I understand that you require a babysitter! What do you call a lazy baby kangaroo? For sharing time together at home

7 Something to think about L ve is Love is truth Love is giving freely Love is powerful Love is respectful Love is unconditional Optional activity Talk together about the following: EITHER A couple are thinking about the right time for them to have a baby. What do you think are the three most important things for them to consider when having a baby? Quote: A friend is someone you dare to be yourself with Frank Crane, columnist It helps you understand better about having a baby. It is a big thing OR How does being a parent change your life? Some ideas to get you started: A pouch potato! Extra washing! What could you be doing instead? Sleepless nights!

8 This week s theme: Moving On This is what the children are learning this week: I know who is in my personal support network I have an awareness of how puberty can have an effect on emotions and relationships I am able to recognise and manage my feelings about growing up and becoming an adult I know some people and organisations who can support me in my move to secondary school Growing Up B : Chat Time Week 4 Moving On! In class this week: The children have been exploring the emotional changes that happen at puberty and some ways to cope with them. They have shared some of their feelings about moving on to secondary school. They have also thought about who is in their personal support network both inside and outside of school. What do you call a slug wearing a crash helmet? For sharing time together at home

9 Something to think about The Moving On poem This has been written for young people - can you think of a better one? I know what changes are going to happen to me now and how to deal with them Change is scary Change is fun Don t forget It happens to every one In this time of change for you Always remember what you can do Thinking Ready Steady Go Will help you see the way to go If you need a little chat To help you cope with this and that There at school will always be Someone to share the load you ll see Chat at school and chat at home Then you might feel less alone! Optional activity Talk together about: EITHER Kelly is 10 years old and is in year 5 at school. She has grown a lot taller in the last year and has started to grow hair under her arms. She is finding that she cries more easily than she used to and sometimes finds it hard to control her anger. Kelly has talked to her friend about how she feels but doesn t feel that her friend understands. Chat about: OR What Kelly may be going through that may explain her feelings. Who Kelly could talk to about her feelings at home or school. Sam is 11 years old and in Year 6 at school. He is moving to secondary school in September and in lots of ways he is excited about his new school. He has heard some stories from his older brother and sister, which worry him about secondary school. He is unsure who will be there at school to help him if he is finding something difficult. Chat about: Answer: A snail What Sam could do to help him find out what secondary school is really like Who Sam could talk to at home and at school about his feelings You may find the Coping with Change sheet from your week 1 Chat Time leaflet useful when talking about these situations.

10 Growing Up B : Chat Time week 5 Review and Reflect In the final Growing Up lesson this week the children have been looking back at what they have learnt during the module. They have been remembering: that change happens to everyone and that it can be exciting ways of coping with change when it is wanted or unwanted Optional activity The Responsibility Quiz This can be completed by parents along with their child/ren. It is about considering changes in their lives as they grow up. Answer the questions in the table below deciding at what age a child could, or will be able to, do the activities listed. Talk together about: Both answers. Which answers are the same and which are different? Why? What age you were when you did some of the things on the list - if you can remember! The best age to do some of these things NOTE: There are no right or wrong answers; families will have their own beliefs and values. Washing myself Task Going out with friends Walking or getting to school on my own Getting a job Moving away from home Brushing my teeth Tidying my bedroom Driving a car Riding a bike Washing my own clothes Having a pet (and looking after it!) Doing the washing up Cooking my own food Going shopping Adult answers - At what age do you think your child could do these things? Child answers - At what age do you think you could do these things? Final question: Which activity from the list will your child be trying next and what support might they need? This is the last Walk Tall activity for this module.
