2 GETTING STARTED WITH YOUR JOB SEARCH Many people start the job application process as soon as they have noticed a job advertisement that interests them. In many ways, this is a good strategy: often the interview process begins as soon as the first applications have been received. It often ends up that the most recently arrived applications are no longer looked at because the right person has already been spotted from among the first applicants. If you have the time and the opportunity to get well-prepared for the job search, there are a couple of things that are worth doing before filling out job applications.
3 Spend a moment thinking what kind of a job you are actually looking for It is easier to find the perfect job when you know what you are looking for. Are you looking for a job in which you can fulfill yourself and which builds your career in the direction you want? Or, do you perhaps need to get a job quickly, in order to guarantee your livelihood? In both of these cases, it is worthwhile to think about the kind of job for which you are suitable. Think about the skills you honestly have and express them without groveling. Also, think about the kind of working environment in which you would enjoy working. You can make a list of companies in which you could imagine yourself as an employee. What is in common among them? What is important to you in a job and working environment?
4 Put your application papers in order Update your résumé. Make sure you have explained your work experience sufficiently. Is your résumé easy to read, flawless and intriguing? Have the courage to ask a sharp-eyed friend of yours to proofread the résumé. If you don't have a résumé yet, prepare one. Models for this purpose are available from Barona's job search pages and elsewhere on the Internet. What is important, is that you can tell about your know-how honestly and in an intriguing way. It is a good idea to start the résumé with a short introduction. You can say, for example, what kind of skills you have, what motivates you and what kind of a job you hope to find for yourself. Keep the introduction short a few sentences is enough. The introduction is like a written elevator pitch, i.e. sales talk about yourself. Gather all of your job certificates and put them in a neat folder so that you will have the opportunity to present them in future interviews.
5 References It is worth the effort to have the courage to ask, primarily, your former supervisors for references. Ask for permission to give their contact information to your potential new employer. If you are in the early stages of your career, you can also consider asking for a reference from a teacher or the instructor of your hobby, for example. Thinking about your references will also help you understand your work history and the networks you have created. Could an interesting job be found through them? Social media It is also a good idea to clean up your social media account at the beginning of your job search. Your LinkedIn account, especially, should be up-to- date because it is directly used by employers looking for people for jobs that require specific expertise. According to the Finnish law, the employer cannot look for information about you from your social media accounts, such as your Facebook account, without your permission. You can directly grant the employer permission for that in your application, if using social media is beneficial for your job search. Today, social media can also be used as a good tool for your job search. If it feels comfortable for you, openly tell your acquaintances in social media that you are looking for work. Job searching may prove successful through social media as well.
6 Search and find Vacancies can be searched from multiple websites. Barona career pages and Barona social media channels contain a lot of vacancies. The TE Services website of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment allows you to look for open positions in your geographical area or further away. Job search portals, like those of Oikotie and Monster, are also a good choice for looking for vacancies.
7 Search carefully Remember the hidden jobs. In many companies there is no time for recruiting, or recruiting has not been started, for some reason, even if there is need for a good worker. In your job search, also remember those jobs that you wish to have but that have not been made publicly available. Take the courage to make an open application and give the reasons why you are specifically looking for a job in their company. Small, interesting companies may turn up in discussions with your friends. By investigating the news and company websites, you might be able to find out why they are in need of a worker just now.
8 Tell them that you are looking for a job There is no need to do the job search all alone. Let those in your circle of acquaintances and your network know that you are looking for a job.then your acquaintances know to contact you when they come up with something that suits you. Do not forget about the companies you already know. Do not give up if the interviews you had last time did not bring you a job they can lead to a job in the future! When you have applied for a job once, you are familiar to the recruiting officer and you might be the person in his or her mind when a new position that would suit you opens up. Recruiting officers at Barona are looking for workers for multiple jobs simultaneously and are thinking how an applicant might be suitable for other open positions. Let the consultant know, directly, that you can be kept in mind for other positions as well.
9 Applications When you have come across a job advertisement that you find interesting, read it carefully and think about what they really are looking for. What are the prerequisites for being selected for the job and which factors might be useful in your job search? Make your application as soon as possible, because applications are being read as soon as they arrive. First come, first served holds true in a job search.
10 Interviews When you receive an invitation to come for a job interview, make the effort to be well prepared for it: Look for information about the workplace and think of answers to potential questions. It is a good idea to arrive in good time and to be decently dressed. Pay attention to good behavior: Shake hands with the interviewer and make good eye contact. If there are several interviewers, direct your speech to each of them separately. It is natural to be nervous about an interview. If you feel that you cannot relax in the interview, you can let the interviewer know about it being nervous tells them that the situation is important to you. Video interview Approach video interviews with the same attitude that you would when being interviewed face to face. Take your time doing it and look tidy. Make an effort to answer the questions clearly and calmly. If the interview is not a live one, you can practice your answers and record them again. In the interview, show that you are a skillful professional and, above all, that you are motivated. When shooting the video interviews, make sure that there is enough light in the room and that the background is clean. You can also try out shooting the video outdoors if it is possible to do so that your voice is heard.
11 Questions that you can be prepared for: Why did you apply for this position? Tell us about yourself. Talk about your expertise and any work experience that might be useful for the job for which you are applying. What have you learned from your previous jobs? What strengths do you have? What areas do you wish to develop? Why should we select you, in particular, for this position? What motivates you? What is your desired salary? When can you start? Do you have anything to ask?
