3 FOREWARD RENDER 2013 Welcome to Render 2013, the annual graduation showcase of the School of Digital Media and Infocomm Technology (DMIT). We cordially invite you to visit the showcases put together by final-year digital media and infocomm technology students on 8 & 9 March 2013 at the Singapore Polytechnic Convention Centre. This ebook captures the works produced by our graduating cohort. These students are the pride and joy of DMIT and they have put in their heart and soul into their projects. I am sure you will find this ebook an enjoyable read! This year marks a significant milestone for DMIT as the first batch of students from the Diploma in Visual Effects and Motion Graphics (DVEMG), Digital Animation (DDA) and Digital Media (DDM) completes their journey. 6 Credit My Life Remember the thrill of filling your favorite piggy bank when you were young? A dollar a day does not go far but with some determination, it can be stretched. For many people, the piggy bank is the first step to learn about money and savings. As you grow older, the world gets complicated. You are faced with increasing needs and a vast number of financial products to manage them. Personal finance is no longer about depositing coins into piggy banks. Without proper financial literacy skills, the dangers will start to creep in. It aims to make good money management both fun and comprehensible for youths. Users will learn how to manage their money and credit cards to meet their desired lifestyle needs. Failure to pay after borrowing will incur credit card debt that lowers the DP- Delphi Score a credit score that determines the creditworthiness of a user. The game also introduces personas of various age groups so that youths are exposed to and can better anticipate different financial situations in their adult life. PHP Flash & ActionScript The project application has been used by Delphi Credit Bureau as a platform to reach out to young adults and educating them proper credit habits.

7 Crow Hazard Have you ever felt frustrated about bird droppings on your car whenever you park in an open car park? If you do, then Crow Hazard is the game for you! This game allows you to vent your frustration on the crows that dare to bombard your car with their crap! Protect your cars with a variety of objects and shoot down those crows to prevent them from laying waste to your car! In this game, there will be 2 phases, the construction phase and the wave phase. During the construction phase, you will have to protect the car from bird droppings by placing randomised items around the car to form a protective fortress. The higher the difficulty level, the lesser protective items you can use. During the wave phase, crows will start flying in to bombard the car. But how are you going to vent your frustration by just protecting your car? That is where the weapons come in! You are able to purchase weapons to shoot the crows and bring them down before they release their droppings on your car! 8 DrinkWhere How often you have to find where is the cheapest beer on happy hour? When you finally get to the rows of pubs you came to realize a greater horror, which of them has the most value for money drink for you to indulge on? Pub goers often face this problem of trying to get most bang out of the buck but there just isn t a quick solution to it. There are three ways which the users can search for a pub promotion: the list view displays a list of pubs according to the distance of the user from the pub, the map view allows the user to have an aerial view of the pubs that are in the vicinity, and last but not least, the search view which allows the users to search for a pub either by the location. Social media has also been integrated into DrinkWhere? ; users are able share pub promotions with their friends on Facebook or Twitter directly from DrinkWhere? application. DrinkWhere? also has a microsite which features a one page introduction about the application. From this page, pub vendors and owners can click on a link to register their pub and promotions in the DrinkWhere? Vendor-Management-System (VMS). New promotions and updates by the vendor will be updated in real-time in the application.

9 Interactive Kinect Wall Toh Zhu Er Joel Khoo Wei Lip Lee Poh Shen Ng Yan Ru Ng Poh Ee Ng Wan Ting Nadzirah Binte Mohamed Azri Lim De Yang Karl Kwan Adobe Flash School of Digital Media and Infocomm Technology (DMIT) is one of the ten schools in Singapore Polytechnic that trains students to become masters of technology with the convergence of IT with business, finance and media, along with telecommunication and consumer electronics. DMIT is not satisfied with the function of the LCD television, placed at level three of the school, to display students achievements, projects, and photographs of events involving the students of DMIT using power point slides. The content administrator feels that the method of updating contents is a hassle and unappealing. Therefore, the content administrator wishes to change the function of the LCD television into an interactive Kinect wall. The content administrator wants to make use of a Kinect and a reliable database system to display contents, making it satisfying by allowing users to engage with the interactive wall and be captivated by the well thought-out dynamic graphic designs that catch the eye. The content administrator wants to make sure the application is up and running properly, no glitches and problems. The agenda of this project is to develop an interactive content-based application, aided with Kinect Technology. The application will run in Flash to provide information and selling points of School of Digital Media and Infocomm Technology (DMIT), especially designed to cater to future students of the school. There will be five main features in the application Courses, Achievements, Events, Staff, and Gallery. Not applicable.

10 Kinect Rehabilitation Game Application For some elderly stroke patients, performing therapy exercise are difficult and repetition of exercises can be quite dull for them. This leads them to feel bored and less motivated to perform the exercises. The game will be used as an alternative exercise for the elderly. Therefore, the game will create a more enjoyable therapy session for them instead of purely doing exercise every day. The game will integrate movements similar to the therapy exercises performed in rehabilitation. This ensures that patients will get the same effect as normal therapy session while having fun. 11 SP My SP Memories is an on-going project that collects and preserves stories and memories of the SP community which includes freshmen, current students, alumni and staff. Memories can be contributed in the form of short stories and images. There is a running website ( for the SP community to contribute to the My SP Memories project. SP students, alumni and staff are encouraged to participate in this initiative. This application is created in commemoration of SP s 60th Anniversary and is a reflection of the current My SP Memories website. This application will serve as a tool to collect and preserve stories and memories from the SP community. Users can browse through past memories retrieved from the website, contribute their memories, comment on posts and create photo collages. Submitted posts may also be contributed to the Singapore s Memory Project ( on behalf of SP. The project is due to be uploaded into Apple AppStore for distribution. App will be used by the school for marketing and outreach purposes.

12 NDP Project 1 Every year there is NDP(National Day Parade). For this year, one of the projects which my group is involved in is called, Building a Loving SG. The aim for this project is to raise funds for The School Pocket Money Fund. The project aims to recreate a LEGO version of the actual Marina Bay Floating Platform. The donation is $5, and by donating $5 the members of the public will receive two LEGO minifigure which they could customise. One of it is for them to keep while the other will receive a seat on the seating gallery of the miniature platform. All donations from this project will go to the Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund. For this project we are supposed to help promote the event called, Building a Loving SG, digitally by using the means of social media. We are to create a page where people can donate by using the means of PayPal. After donating online, the people are given a choice to choose when and where to collect their LEGO figures. 13 NDP Project 2: Virtual Choir NDP Virtual Choir is a project where we aim to get as many Singaporeans to submit videos of themselves singing the National Anthem. Their video entries will then be compiled into a mass of voices on video which will be called a Virtual Choir Our role in this project is to help out in the NDP Virtual Choir development, getting mainly our target audiences, age ranging from 13 to 19 years old to submit their videos for the Choir, and to maintain public interest in this project. This project is broken down into 2 phases; Yu Wai Lynn Tan Pei Ying Wong Kok Fai Jackie Tan Jasmine Bay Li Ting Yeo Khuang Hin Bradley PHP Flash & ActionScript Adobe After Effects Phase 1 requires us to create a medium to introduce the Virtual Choir to the general public. We created a Website for the Virtual Choir, which includes the About Page, Submission Page and the How-To Page. We also wrote and filmed Instructional Videos to supplement the How-To Page. We hoped that through this, the Virtual Choir project would be better known among Singaporeans. Phase 2 required us to sustain the interest of the public. We did this by creating an Animated Promotional Video that featured Singaporeans from all over the world getting to know about the Virtual Choir. Also, we developed a Flash Games which was Music Themed to be placed onto the Facebook page to bring more traffic to the Facebook page. The project website was used by the NDP committee during NDP 2012 to collect singing recordings of national anthem.

14 TickHere Event organizers often find themselves in a fix when visitors are coming in from all directions. Helpers are not able to consolidate the attendance when all the attendance sheets are marked by different people. Time is of essence when you are running an event. To also help event organizers making sense of the data, they should be able to quickly compile these attendance and namelist together for useful marketing purposes.
