1 Youth Work Apprenticeships We are pleased to offer 2 youth work apprenticeships in West Kent YMCA s Vehicle 4 Change [V4C] - an exciting youth work project giving local young people a life changing opportunity. Could YOU accompany a large mobile resource unit and trailer to different locations across West Kent to work with young people wherever they are? Could YOU help the V4C team, young people and tutors to design and deliver training courses to meet identified needs? Could you do WITHOUT the hassle of student loans and tuition fees? 2 Big Lottery Fund Vehicle for Change [V4C] Project Youth Work Young Apprenticeships Our Young Apprentice Programme is for young people aged who have a passion to make a difference in their community; while being employed by West Kent YMCA to gain experience, training and qualifications. Job Description Flexible working 30 hours a week to include week days, school holidays, evenings and weekends. You will join an established four year youth outreach project. You will report to V4C Project Leader. Job Purpose To assist the V4C team, and as the apprenticeship develops become responsible for: 1. To assist the V4C team to deliver the aims and outcomes of the Project 2. Support and empower young people involved in designing, running and evaluating the project 3. Engage local communities and young people to identify local needs and issues 4. Accompany a large mobile resource unit and trailer to different locations across West Kent to come alongside and work with young people wherever they are 5. Help the V4C team, young people and tutors to design and deliver training courses to meet identified need 6. Assist other voluntary and statutory agencies on the mobile resource unit to deliver information, advice and guidance to support young people 7. Assist the Horizon Project [supported vocational training in construction skills], Ryder House [supported housing and youth inclusion programme] and Warehouses [work experience, training and enterprise] to enable trainees and residents to help deliver training or provide peer support on information or activity sessions 8. Work with young people from the project and from other projects within West Kent YMCA to design and deliver local projects for the benefit of their communities 9. Build bridges between young people, their communities and local agencies 10. Ensure monitoring and recording systems are used effectively 11. Support the V4C team in securing grants and other funding streams 12. Promote the project and network with other agencies and community groups 13. Ensure safeguarding, health & safety and other duties of care are met; including completion of risk assessments and administering first aid
3 Person Specification Essential To be a Christian or to be supportive of the Christian ethos of the YMCA movement. Willing to work outside in all weathers Ability to work alone or as part of a team Good communication skills Good listener and able to communicate with young people Knowledge or awareness of the skills required to assist in supporting young people with challenging behavioural issues Knowledge or awareness of the skills required to support, mentor and develop young people Reliable, good time keeper Self starter" Calm in a crisis Flexible approach to working hours and occasional travel out of county Positive role model for young people Good computing skills - use of the internet for researching, , Facebook, Twitter, word processing, spreadsheet, publisher Desirable Knowledge or awareness of setting and maintaining professional boundaries within a small team Knowledge or awareness of safeguarding - protection from abuse procedures. Knowledge or awareness of using monitoring and evaluation systems Knowledge or awareness of training methods and provision Experience of working with volunteers Experience or awareness of community development work, social inclusion, consultation, youth empowerment and equality and diversity Functional skills literacy, numeracy and ICT at Level 2 or 3 Notes All posts are subject to an enhanced CRB disclosure for working with Children, Young People and Vulnerable Adults. 4 Become an apprentice Youth Worker orker... There are many initiatives that offer young people the opportunity to make something of their lives. West Kent YMCA offers you something very special: Level 2 or 3 Young Apprenticeship in Youth Work with Vehicle for Change [V4C]. West Kent YMCA & The Big Lottery Fund offers a 12-month Apprentice Programme that combines on-the-job-based learning (60%), study (10%) and personal development (30%). It s not just a training course, it's a custom-made programme. Our apprentices (aged 18-25) are recruited and trained to become professional youth workers. It's an intensive and demanding programme that requires hard work and dedication, but it's a transformational journey; our team regard their time with Vehicle for Change as a positive, indeed, life-changing experience. This is an opportunity to do what you love, learn to be even better and get paid for it! Recruitment has started - so applicants can apply now. The two young people who are accepted will be asked to join the programme by October. Each apprentice will be trained in: Goal setting & Goal achievement strategies Motivation Engagement processes Event and project management First aid at work Teamwork and personal responsibility Dealing with issues affecting young people Appropriate behaviour and professional boundaries Over the course of the year, as they develop in confidence and skill, the apprentices begin developing their own projects that really add value to the lives of other young people. From the outset they will be valuable team members and experience for themselves a variety of challenging activities. V4C staff have led teams that have conquered the highest mountains in England & Scotland, successfully kayaked across the 3 lakes and completed assault courses, archery, sailing, mountain biking, motocross and camping. V4C has run youth leadership programmes, accredited training courses, job clubs, and numerous other youth activities; including a 2 week expedition to Macedonia. 5 Elegibility... In order to be eligible for the programme, you should: Be aged 18 to 25 Be able to work in the UK for the duration of the apprenticeship Have a good command of spoken English Be available for interviews, assessments and youth panels in September 2012 Be ready to start full-time in October 2012 Ready to get going?... You'll need to be committed to the programme for one year; and willing to work hard and be prepared for flexible hours (some evenings and weekends) No previous experience in youth work is needed, just a great attitude and a willingness to walk the talk and be a good role model for other young people Ready? During this time, each apprentice works up to five days per week including formal training, hands-on experience with the V4C team, personal development activities and work experience. One-month induction at the start of the programme Training in a typical week o one day a week on course work o two days a week of trips, work experience taster days, youth activities, team building sessions or special events o two days a week working and training with the West Kent YMCA team Salary National apprenticeship rates with quarterly reviews Annual Leave Paid holiday entitlement is 5.6 weeks per year plus bank holidays Other benefits Apprentices will be members of the Company Health Scheme and can join the Pension Scheme Helping you get even better... As well as on-the-job learning, apprentices are provided with a range of support called the V4C Youth Champion Programme to help them make the transition to qualified youth worker. The programme addresses complex issues and barriers to learning, that could hinder achievement - after all that s what we do. As part of the Youth Champion Programme, apprentices undertake challenging activities to strengthen their team-working skills, essential for working with young people. These include residential challenges, team activities, fundraising events, and work experience in various youth work environments. And the programme ending is really just the beginning...
