Development and Test on Amazon Web Services Solution Briefing June 2013 Page 1 of 7
Overview An easy way to get started using Amazon Web Services is by deploying development and test workloads. This solution briefing outlines some of the challenges that customers face with these workloads, and how AWS can help address them. In addition, it provides an overview of AWS, highlights some key services for these scenarios and provides links so that you can obtain more information about any service that you are interested in. Customer Challenges Some of the key challenges that we know customers face for development and test workloads can be grouped into three simple scenarios: Obtaining compute resources: Often, in an on- premises environment, it can be very time consuming to obtain compute resources such as servers. Multiple steps are typically required that could range from researching hardware to procure, going through the necessary procurement processes to finally deploying and configuring the hardware. Often this process can take weeks or months, and typically requires capital expenditure and associated justification. Multiple environments are tough: During the development and test process, it s usual to have multiple environments so that development and testing can take place outside of the production environment. In an on- premises environment that often involves duplication of infrastructure with associated costs and ongoing maintenance effort. Building a new test environment is often difficult, time consuming and expensive. Experimentation is slow: Given the typical capital expenditure requirements and time to obtain compute resources, in an on- premises environment it can take significant amounts of time just to obtain the resources necessary to create a prototype, or undertake other experimental activities. In addition to this, given the capital costs of procuring traditional hardware, many organizations understandably have rigorous justification processes that must be followed prior to procuring hardware that can also slow things down. Together, these factors can lower your pace of innovation. How AWS can help Obtaining compute resources: In the AWS cloud, compute resources can be obtained within minutes. Whether it s creating a new development environment, adding a new test environment or even launching 1,000 servers into a production environment, the time taken to obtain these compute resources is significantly lower than in an on- premises environment. Multiple environments are tough: In the AWS cloud, multiple development and test environments can be created and deleted with scripts, or a few mouse clicks in a management console. A development or test environment could be provisioned within minutes and stay running just for the amount of time you need it for, whether that is minutes, hours, days or years. Experimentation is slow: AWS helps experimentation by removing many of the traditional constraints in an on- premises environment. AWS lets you experiment with no up- front commitment and requires you to pay only for what you use. This enables you to experiment often, and means you can fail quickly at a low cost, and iterate on your ideas something that can ultimately enable more innovation. Page 2 of 7
AWS can also enable new scenarios. With no up- front commitment and pay- as- you- go pricing, it s easy to utilize infrastructure for many different tasks involved with development and test that might have been prohibitively expensive or logistically impossible in the past. You pay the same amount to run 1 compute instance for 2000 hours, or 10 compute instances for 200 hours, or 2000 compute instances for 1 hour. This means that at any point you can make a decision about exactly which computing resources you might require to complete your tasks. In an on- premises environment, it s just not possible to make these decisions dynamically, as you are limited to the hardware that you have already procured. What is Amazon Web Services Amazon has a long history of using a decentralized IT infrastructure. This arrangement enabled our development teams to access compute and storage resources on demand, and it has increased overall productivity and agility. By 2005, Amazon had spent over a decade and millions of dollars building and managing the large- scale, reliable, and efficient IT infrastructure that powered one of the world s largest online retail platforms. Amazon launched Amazon Web Services (AWS) so that other organizations could benefit from Amazon s experience and investment in running a large- scale distributed, transactional IT infrastructure. AWS has been operating since 2006, and today serves hundreds of thousands of customers worldwide. Today Amazon.com runs a global web platform serving millions of customers and managing billions of dollars worth of commerce every year. Using AWS, you can requisition compute power, storage, and other services in minutes and have the flexibility to choose the development platform or programming model that makes the most sense for the problems they re trying to solve. You pay only for what you use, with no up- front expenses or long- term commitments, making AWS a cost- effective way to deliver applications. AWS is: Flexible. AWS enables organizations to use the programming models, operating systems, databases, and architectures with which they are already familiar. In addition, this flexibility helps organizations mix and match architectures in order to serve their diverse business needs. Cost- effective. With AWS, organizations pay only for what they use, without up- front or long- term commitments. Scalable and elastic. Organizations can quickly add and subtract AWS resources to their applications in order to meet customer demand and manage costs. Secure. In order to provide end- to- end security and end- to- end privacy, AWS builds services in accordance with security best practices, provides the appropriate security features in those services, and documents how to use those features. Experienced. When using AWS, organizations can leverage Amazon s more than fifteen years of experience delivering large- scale, global infrastructure in a reliable, secure fashion. AWS serves hundreds of thousands of customers in more than 190 countries with infrastructure and offers a choice of 9 regions located all over the world (e.g. East Coast of the United States, West Coast of the United States, Europe, Tokyo, Singapore, Sydney, Brazil), and 25 redundant Availability Zones. 4 Key AWS Services The following section lists some details on key services that might be useful for development and test scenarios. For information on the complete list of AWS services, please see Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) is a web service that provides virtual servers in the cloud. It is designed to make web- scale computing easier for developers and system administrators. Amazon EC2 s simple web service interface allows you to obtain and configure capacity with minimal friction. It provides you with complete control of your computing resources and lets you run on Amazon s proven computing environment. Amazon EC2 reduces the time required to obtain and boot new server instances to minutes, allowing you to quickly scale capacity, both up and down, as your computing requirements change. Amazon EC2 changes the economics of computing by allowing you to pay only for capacity that you actually use. Amazon EC2 provides developers and system administrators the tools to build failure resilient applications and isolate themselves from common failure scenarios. In addition to providing the flexibility to easily choose the number, the size and the configuration of the compute instances you need for your application, Amazon EC2 provides you three different purchasing models that give you the flexibility to optimize your costs. On- Demand Instances allow you to pay a fixed rate by the hour with no commitment; with Reserved Instances you pay a low, one- time fee and in turn receive a significant discount on the hourly charge for that instance; and Spot Instances enable you to bid whatever price you want for instance capacity, providing for even greater savings if your applications have flexible start and end times. On- Demand Instances On- Demand Instances let you pay for compute capacity by the hour with no long- term commitments or upfront payments. You can increase or decrease your compute capacity depending on the demands of your application and only pay the specified hourly rate for the instances you use. On- Demand Instances are ideal for compute resources in development and test workloads that may not be required for long periods of time or used 24x7x365. Reserved Instances Reserved Instances let you make a low, one- time, upfront payment for an instance, reserve it for a one or three year term, and pay a significantly lower hourly rate for that instance. You are assured that your Reserved Instance will always be available for the operating system (e.g. Linux/UNIX or Windows) and Availability Zone in which you purchased it. For applications that have steady state needs, Reserved Instances can provide savings of up to 71% compared to using On- Demand Instances. Functionally, Reserved Instances and On- Demand Instances perform identically. Reserved Instances are ideal for compute resources in development and test workloads that are likely to run for longer periods of time or for infrastructure components such as build servers, source control systems and project management software. Page 4 of 7
Spot Instances Spot Instances provide the ability for you to purchase compute capacity with no upfront commitment and at hourly rates usually lower than the On- Demand rate. Spot Instances allow you to specify the maximum hourly price that you are willing to pay to run a particular instance type. Amazon EC2 sets a Spot Price for each instance type in each Availability Zone, which is the price all customers will pay to run a Spot Instance for that given period. The Spot Price fluctuates based on supply and demand for instances, but you will never pay more than the maximum price they have specified. If the Spot Price moves higher than a your maximum price, your instance will be shut down by Amazon EC2. Other than those differences, Spot Instances perform exactly the same as On- Demand or Reserved Instances. Spot Instances are ideal for compute resources in development and test workloads such as performance and scale testing and other scenarios that can tolerate an instance being terminated. Using Spot Instances allows you take advantage of lower costs. Learn more about Amazon EC2 at Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC) Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (Amazon VPC) lets you provision a private, isolated section of the AWS cloud where you can launch AWS resources in a virtual network that you define. With Amazon VPC, you can define a virtual network topology that closely resembles a traditional network that you might operate in your own data center. You have complete control over your virtual networking environment, including selection of your own IP address range, creation of subnets, and configuration of route tables and network gateways. You can easily customize the network configuration for your Amazon VPC. For example, you could easily create different subnets for the various development and test environments that you provision to ensure that they are isolated. You can leverage multiple layers of security (including security groups and network access control lists) to help control access to Amazon EC2 instances in each subnet. Additionally, you can create a hardware virtual private network (VPN) connection between your corporate data center and your VPC and leverage the AWS cloud as an extension of your corporate data center, securely. Learn more about Amazon VPC at AWS CloudFormation AWS CloudFormation gives developers and systems administrators an easy way to create and manage a collection of related AWS resources, provisioning and updating them in an orderly and predictable fashion. You can use AWS CloudFormation s sample templates or create your own templates to describe the AWS resources, and any associated dependencies or runtime parameters, required to run your application. You don t need to figure out the order in which AWS services need to be provisioned or the subtleties of how to make those dependencies work. AWS CloudFormation takes care of this for you. Once deployed, you can modify and update the AWS resources in a controlled and predictable way. This allows you to version control your AWS infrastructure in the same way as you version control your software. Creating, updating and deleting development or test environments is extremely easy and quick with CloudFormation. You can deploy and update a template and its associated collection of resources (called a stack) using the AWS Management Console, AWS CloudFormation command line tools, or CloudFormation API. AWS CloudFormation is available at no additional charge, and you pay only for the AWS resources needed to run your applications. Learn more about Amazon CloudFormation at Page 5 of 7
AWS Elastic Beanstalk AWS Elastic Beanstalk is an easy way for you to quickly deploy and manage applications in the AWS cloud. You simply upload your application, and Elastic Beanstalk automatically handles the deployment details of capacity provisioning, load balancing, auto scaling, and application health monitoring. Developers can also upload applications to Elastic Beanstalk straight from the Eclipse or Visual Studio IDE. At the same time, with Elastic Beanstalk, you retain full control over the AWS resources powering your application and can access the underlying resources at any time. Elastic Beanstalk leverages AWS services such as Amazon EC2, Amazon S3, Amazon Simple Notification Service (Amazon SNS), Elastic Load Balancing, and Auto Scaling to deliver the same highly reliable, scalable, and cost- effective infrastructure that hundreds of thousands of businesses depend on today. Elastic Beanstalk is easy to get started with and impossible to outgrow. Most existing application containers or platform- as- a- service solutions, while reducing the amount of programming required, significantly diminish developers' flexibility and control. Developers are forced to live with all the decisions pre- determined by the vendor and have little to no opportunity to take back control over various parts of their application's infrastructure. However, with Elastic Beanstalk, you retain full control over the AWS resources powering your application. If you decide you want to take over some (or all) of the elements of their infrastructure, you can do so seamlessly by using Elastic Beanstalk's management capabilities. To ensure easy portability of your application, Elastic Beanstalk is built using familiar software stacks such as the Apache HTTP Server for PHP and Python, Passenger for Ruby, Apache Tomcat for Java, and Microsoft IIS for.net web applications. There is no additional charge for Elastic Beanstalk. You pay only for the AWS resources you need to store and run your applications. Learn more about Amazon Elastic Beanstalk at Work with the tools and technologies you are used to For development and test workloads on AWS, it s easy to continue using the tools and technologies that developers are already familiar with. AWS provides SDKs for Android, ios, Java,.NET, Node.js, Python, PHP and Ruby. These SDKs can be used both in applications that you develop that are cloud- aware as well as to control and manage your AWS resources. Using the SDK, for example, you could easily create, modify or delete one or many test or development environments via AWS CloudFormation with a simple script. AWS also provides integration with the Eclipse and Visual Studio IDEs. From the IDEs that developers are already using, they can access AWS APIs, manage AWS resources and even upload an application directly to AWS Elastic Beanstalk. Learn more about AWS SDKs and IDE integration at Partners AWS has a broad ecosystem of thousands of partners, such as Adobe, IBM, Microsoft, Oracle and SAP. It s easy to use the applications and technologies you are already used to using in the AWS cloud as part of your development and test workloads. When deploying Development and Test workloads in the AWS cloud, it s important to be able to find an Independent Software Vendor (ISV) or Systems Integrator (SI) if you need one. The Amazon Partner Network (APN) makes it easy to find a partner that meets your needs. Learn more about the Amazon Partner network at Page 6 of 7
