2 You can not prepare your students for the PARCC test without.. THREE SHIFTS OF ELA COMMON CORE

4 Tip #1 Include Informational text and writing in ELA classes.

5 According to PARCC... The Common Core State Standards call for students in grades 3-11 to proficiently read gradeappropriate complex literature and informational text (RL/RI.3.10) such that they can ask and answer questions by referring explicitly to a text (RL/RI.3.1). Explicitly- state clearly and in detail.

6 according to parcc. Because the ELA classroom must focus on literature (stories, drama, and poetry) as well as literary nonfiction, a great deal of informational reading in grades 6-12 must take place in other classes to meet the demands of the standards.

7 According to PARCC... Exposing students, Grades 3-5, grade-level texts of appropriate complexity lies at the heart of each module. The modules reflect the balance of 50 percent informational text and 50 percent literature that students are expected to read, including reading in ELA, science, social studies, and the arts.

12 Close reading strategies will be the transition to link Common Core (foundation) to PARCC. 1. Have student read cold (independent), 2. Analyze text and vocabulary with students through discussion and questions 3. Read orally for fluency. 4. Write Close Reading Template

13 TIP #3 ACADEMIC VOCABULARY The Critical Word List

14 According to PARCC... Study and apply vocabulary: To focus vocabulary instruction on words that students would be encouraged to use in writing and speaking, students should be given 5 10 Tier 2 academic words per week for each text (L.3.4-6). Students require multiple exposures to targeted vocabulary words in authentic contexts to retain an understanding of the words meaning(s) and use the words effectively when writing and speaking. DO NOT TEACH VOCABULARY IN ISOLATION...

15 General Academic Vocabulary - BLOOMS/DEPTH OF KNOWLEDGE All directions and prompts will include Bloom words. Each teacher should make sure that they are using this vocabulary in class especially the term analyze - Stem questions

16 TIP # 4 CONTEXT CLUES WILL ALLOW STUDENTS TO FIND MEANINGS OF UNKNOWN WORDS IN PASSAGES.

Grades 3-5 The balance of student writing should be 65 percent analytical (30 percent opinions and 35 percent to explain/inform) and 35 percent narrative with a mix of on-demand and review-and-revision writing assignments. Building student competence and confidence with technology should be part of instruction.

23 TIP #8 Literary Analysis Ability to read complex text closely (close reading) is a skill that research reveals as the most significant factor of being CCCR. This task will ask students to carefully consider literature worthy of close study and compose an analytic essay. 23

24 TIP #8 FOCUS ON. LITERARY ANALYSIS (CITED EVIDENCE) Part C Writing- focus on THEME that identifies and analyzes as well as CHARACTERISTICS that analyzes tension in 2 stories or analyzes the different approaches the author takes to develop the characters. POINT OF VIEW (Blooms level of Critical thinking).

25 Literary Analysis Task Students carefully consider two literary texts worthy of close study. They are asked to answer a few EBSR and TECR questions about each text to demonstrate their ability to do close analytic reading and to compare and synthesize ideas. Students write a literary analysis about the two texts.

27 TIP #9 RESEARCH SIMULATION TASK- Science or Social Studies Accomplished through Document Based Questions units of study. History teachers play a big part in Section II. FOCUS ON... COMPARISON ESSAYS WRITING

28 Part D. Writing the Research Simulation Task (Example for HS) You have read two texts (name them) and viewed a video entitled (name it). In an essay For Scientific Related (animals, environment, chemistry, archeology) Compare and contrast the information in the texts with the information in the video Examine and/or delineate a phenomenon For History Related or Argumentative- especially in HS Compare and contrast a primary argument in each text Explore author s purpose For Court Case (HS) Analyze how effectively the arguments are presented for each side

29 tip #10 NARRATIVE TASK Example for Fiction Text based on Bloom- You have read (name the text) Write a narrative story that describes the major events in the passage from the point of view (name the character, it could even be a character that was not in the story but suggested) Write a narrative story that describes what the character (name the character) does and use experiences that she or he had. Think about the details the author uses to create the story plot line (ie setting, characters, events) to guide the writing. Example of Non Fiction Text You have just read an article on (scientific or historical) with a short personal introduction. Write an original short story from the perspective of (name of person in story). Be sure to include details (textual evidence)
