2 Deforestation in SE Asia e.g. LAOS Since 1943 forest cover (> 20% canopy ) in Laos has declined from 70 to 41.5% in 2002 (FIPD). Average loss of forest about 134,000 ha per annum equivalent to 0.6% of the total land area.

4 Project Objectives Develop techniques for closely monitoring areas of interest (e.g. protected forests) using SAR satellite data to quickly identify changes within forested areas, both logging and fire damage Produce detailed and timely forest change maps Establish techniques for on going operational use Generate data and products useful for the pursuit of objectives of the UN REDD Programme Promote and strengthen relations between European, Chinese and SE Asian remote sensing and forestry communities 4

5 Development of Two On going Projects REDD FLAME Fast Logging Assessment & Monitoring Environment Developing a system for rapid identification of logging activities in tropical and sub tropical forests using high and very high resolution radar data, and demonstrating it s use in Indonesia, Brazil and Mozambique. Forest Cover and Above Ground Biomass Mapping in the Greater Mekong Sub region and Malaysia Regional forest cover maps using optical satellites, document forest change processes and estimate above ground biomass in southwest China and SE Asia: Yunnan, & Guangxi Provinces of China, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand and Malaysia 5

17 Summary Aims Develop techniques for quickly identifying early signs of new activity within the forest Allow earlier intervention by the authorities and better management of fragile and valuable forest ecosystems Exploit new sources of high resolution SAR data, particularly Sentinel-1 Add value to existing forest satellite monitoring systems that use lower resolution imagery Support the global effort to combat deforestation under the auspices of the UN-REDD Programme Help to build capacity for managing forest resources and carbon balances in countries where it is implemented 17
