1 Calculus B Practice Problems for Eam III The upcomig eam o Friday, May will cover the material i sectios.,.5,.6,.7, ad.8. Note that the followig problems do ot represet all of the possible types of problems that could appear o the eam. Problems chose for the eam will be similar to homework problems, previous quizzes, eamples doe i class, ad the basic problems from the workshops. You would be best prepared by studyig your class otes, previous quizzes, this practice eam, ad all homework problems. Also ote that the umber of problems preseted i this practice eam may ot represet the actual legth of the eam you see o the eam day. It is likely that the eam will be shorter tha the practice eam here, but you should be prepared for a legthy eam ayway. First try these problems as if it were the real eam; work by yourself without the tet or your otes. This is supposed to be a gauge o what you eed to work o to prepare for the eam. Aswerig these problems as you might hadle homework problems wo t ecessarily give you much of a clue o what you eed to work o. (Page istructios) Istructios: Provide all steps ecessary to solve the problem. Uless otherwise stated, your aswer must be eact ad reasoably simplified. Additioally, clearly idicate the value or epressio that is your fial aswer. Please put your ame o all THREE pages! EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!!! Calculators are NOT allowed for Page but allowed for Pages ad. However, you MUST tur i this page BEFORE you eve pull out your calculator! (Page istructios) Istructios: Provide all steps ecessary to solve the problem. Uless otherwise stated, your aswer must be eact ad reasoably simplified. Additioally, clearly idicate the value or epressio that is your fial aswer. For optimizatio problems, you must demostrate that your aswer is correct by usig the CIM, the SDT, or the FDT (ad do t forget to iclude the domai of the fuctio to be optimized). EXTREMELY IMPORTANT!!! Calculators are allowed for Pages ad (but really oly eeded for the Newto s method problem). However, you MUST tur i Page BEFORE you eve pull out your calculator! (No istructios o page ). The graph of a fuctio f is show to the right. (a) At what poits is the secod derivative zero? (b) At what poits is the secod derivative positive?. The graph of the derivative g of a fuctio g is show. (a) At what itervals is g cocave up or cocave dow? (b) At what values of does g have a poit of iflectio?

2 . The graph of the secod derivative h of a fuctio h is show. (a) At what itervals is h cocave up or cocave dow? (b) At what values of does h have a poit of iflectio?. Evaluate the followig its, if they eist. Be sure to idicate if your aswer is + or. t e l(l ) e (a) (b) (c) t0 t 0 / (d) ( e ) (e) 5. A farmer with 500 ft of fecig wats to eclose a rectagular area ad the divide it ito three pes with fecig parallel to oe side of the rectagle. What is the largest possible total area of the three pes? (Be sure to demostrate that your aswer is correct.) 6. Fid the most geeral ati-derivative of f( ). 7. The mechaic s rule for approimatig square roots states that a where a, =,,, ad is ay positive approimatio to a. (a) Use Newto s Method to derive the mechaic s rule. (b) Usig the mechaic s rule ad startig with =, determie the umber of iteratios it takes to approimate 0 correct to five decimal places. Provide the values of all itermittet steps ad the fial approimatio. 8. Fid g() if g( ), where g() = ad g() =. 9. The graph of a fuctio is show i the figure to the right. Sketch the graph of the atiderivative of the fuctio if the atiderivative is cotiuous o the iterval [0,] ad passes through the origi. 0. A rectagular storage cotaier with a ope top is to have a volume of ft. The legth of its base is triple the width. Fid the dimesios of the cotaier that miimizes the amout of material used. - - Eercises from the tet. I would STONGLY recommed that you try as may of these problems as you ca. Ay of these problems (or oes similar to them) could appear o the eam. If you do t have time to do all of these, I would recommed focusig o the problems that are uderlied ad boldfaced i red. Chapter Practice Eercises (pg 89-9): 6, 6, 65, 67, 69, 79, 85, 87, 89, 9, 95, 97, 99,,, 7

Fid the maimum of A. The legth is give by L = + y. This implies that 500 = + y. Solvig for y gives y = 50.

4 The area is give by A = y = (50 ). I fuctioal otatio: A() = 50. The domai of A is [0, 5]. Fid all poits 0 (0,5) such that A( 0 ) = 0. Sice A() = 50, the settig A( 0 ) = 0 implies 0 = 5 / = 6.5 ft is the oly solutio. Does this poit correspod to the absolute maimum? Use oe of the followig two methods: (CIM) Sice A is cotiuous o [0,5] ad o A(0) = 0, o A( 5 / ) = 78.5, ad o A(5) = 0, the the absolute maimum occurs at the poit ( 5 /, 78.5). (SDT) Note that A() = < 0 for all (0,5). Sice A( 5 / ) = 0 ad A( 5 / ) < 0, the A has a local maimum at 0 = 5 /. 6. The domai of this fuctio is (0, ). The derivative is A( ) 6. To fid the critical umber, we set A () = 0 ad solve Use the Secod Derivative Test (SDT) to show that. correspods to the absolute miimum. Sice 9 6 A is always positive for ay (0, ), the A is cocave up o its domai ad so is a 6 ( ) 6 miimum. 9 Thus, the dimesios are /
