How to help someone who is choking Using the words in the following box, try to fill in the missing words to describe how to help someone who is choking. Abdominal Thrusts Cough Back Blows Chest Obstruction Ambulance Shoulder Blades Casualty If you think someone is, ask them immediately are you choking? If they can speak, get them to until the blockage clears. If they cannot speak but are conscious you will need to give up to five perform... Do this by standing to the side, slightly behind the supporting their with one hand and leaning them well forward. Give up to five sharp blows between the... with the heel of your hand. If the casualty is still choking, a Senior Lifesaver or an adult should perform up to five.. If the. has still not cleared, continue alternating five back blows with five abdominal thrusts and get someone to call an.. If the casualty becomes unconscious you should support the casualty carefully to the ground, call an ambulance and begin CPR (explained in a later session). Remember: Never practice back blows or abdominal thrusts on someone who is not choking or on a child under the age of one. If abdominal thrusts are performed, the casualty must be taken to hospital.
Quiz Thinking about what you have learnt in today s session - try to answer the following questions about how to help someone who is choking. 1. How would you describe an obstruction? 2. List five recognition features of someone who is choking? 3. What is the first thing that you should do if you recognise that someone was choking? 4. How can you tell the difference between someone who has a mild or a severe airway obstruction? 5. What is the worst that could happen to someone who is choking and falls unconscious? 6. Should a casualty that has had abdominal thrusts performed on them go to hospital even if the obstruction is now cleared? 7. At what time should you call for an ambulance if someone was choking? 8. Name two people who you should NEVER perform abdominal thrusts on? 9. What should you do if a choking casualty falls unconscious whilst you are treating them? 10. Think of three rules that would prevent people from choking in the future?
Interview In this activity you are going to work in a group to design an interview about someone who has been treated for choking. In a group of three, decide who will be the casualty, the first-aider and the interviewer. Make up a story in which the first-aider helped one of their friends who was choking. It could be in the playground, at home or on the street it is your choice. Use the box to make notes and practice well because you might be asked to role play your interview in front of the group. The interviewer and photographer have been sent from a local newspaper to report the story. The interviewer can use the following questions or they could make up some of their own. Interview Questions: 1. Where were you? 2. What time was it? 3. Was anyone else there? 4. How did you recognise that your friend was choking? 5. What was the first thing you did to help your friend? 6. Can you describe how you carried out the back blows? 7. Is it dangerous to perform abdominal thrusts? 8. What would you have done if your friend continued to choke? 9. When were the emergency services called? 10. Can you remember what you told them? 11. How did your friend feel afterwards? 12. How did you feel afterwards? 13. Can you do anything to prevent other people from choking?
Choked Up Tales When someone is choking they might have difficulty in speaking or breathing and could be clutching their throat. They may also appear to be wheezing, spluttering, distressed and have a red face. In the boxes below, write a short story about someone who began to choke and draw a picture of what they looked like. You might want to include what they were choking on, where they were and who came to help them. Story Picture
Messed up Look at the statements below and number them in sequence to describe how you would treat a conscious casualty with a severe airway obstruction: Back blows are performed by standing to the side, slightly behind the casualty supporting their chest with one hand and leaning them well forward. Continue alternating five back blows with five abdominal thrusts. Clench your fists and place it between the navel and the bottom of the sternum. If choking continues to persist, get someone to call an ambulance whilst you continue to treat the casualty. Grasp this hand with the other hand and pull sharply inwards and upwards, repeating this action up to five times. If choking persists, perform up to five abdominal thrusts. If the casualty is unable to speak, they have a severe airway obstruction and you should perform back blows. Perform abdominal thrusts by standing behind the casualty, placing both arms round the upper abdomen and lean the casualty forward. Give up to five sharp blows between the shoulder blades with the heel of your hand.
