Introduction to photography, painting and culture of the Lappish landscape. Aims:: To provide students with an orientation to culture, landscape and environment in the Lappish north through photography, painting and regional cultural history. Course content: The North presented via art of photography and painting, a cultural overview of the North in art and history. Method: Lectures, practice, critique. Materials: Digital camera (any kind), portable computer with simple or advanced imaging program, watercolors, lots of paper, brushes, pastels if desired but not required, attitude. Evaluation: Participation and critique. Grading: Pass/fail Requirements: A basic knowledge of photography. Timing: Autumn, usually at the end of August. Content: From the heritage of Finnish Art and Craft till functionalist movement until today's modern design products. The product culture in Finland is presented and discussed using Finnish architects, industrial, graphic, audiovisual, fashion and textile designers and their works as examples. Method: Lectures about Finnish design. In the final assignment students are asked to compare their own heritage and background to their new experiences as foreign exchange students in Rovaniemi and in Finland. The assignment can be writing an essay or to produce an artistic piece or a product according a theme discussed in the class.
