Our current Trustees and external committee members are passionate about our vision and ambition to ensure that together, every student loves their time at Leeds. LUU is one of the most ambitious, exciting and vibrant organisations to be involved with. Some of our highlights from the past year include: A national record for the number of student voting in Student Executive elections 325,743 raised by Leeds RAG for charities 1000 reps were supported to make changes in the Union, University and City of Leeds 17,166 members joined a club or society 93% of students said that the union is contributing positively to their time at University 3 million visits were made to our building 95% of staff say that they enjoy their job 87% of staff say that they love working for LUU Being a member of our Marketing and Development committee gives you the opportunity to volunteer with a sector leading organisation. Currently celebrating it s 75 th year, LUU is working to re-engage with alumni through society alumni memberships, and fundraising for our clubs and societies. We are at an exciting time having undertaken a major piece of market research to understand our members attitudes and motivations, which has been used to inform the development of our strategy for Currently, the Marketing and Development committee are working on developing our external partnerships and exploring options to increase funding through sponsorship, grants, commercial partnerships and developments to our building. The committee also input to LUU s developing Digital Strategy and regularly receive updates from market research. 2 What is a committee member? LUU has a Board of Trustees who oversee the work of the organisation, and set the strategic direction. The Board makes decisions about LUU as an organisation. It makes sure that LUU is well run, that it has enough money to provide the services students want and makes sure that we are on track with our vision Together, we will make sure that every student loves their time at Leeds. To support the Board in their work we have four subcommittees who scrutinize key areas of our work. These subcommittees make decisions and also make recommendations to the Board. For more information on our subcommittees go to: What are you looking for in a Marketing and Development committee member? Our committee members need to be able to think strategically, be insightful and challenge and support others. For this vacancy we want someone who is currently working at a senior level in an organisation of a similar size to LUU. You will be acutely aware of current HR issues and the challenges that a large and diverse employer faces. Who else is on the HR & Remuneration Committee? The committee is made up of trustees and external committee members. It is supported by some key members of the Senior Leadership team. Other committee members have experience In providing HR consultancy services or have experience of working in a senior HR role within a large charity. What time commitments are expected from me? LUU has three Marketing and Development committee meetings a year, which usually run from 4 7pm. You will need to spend some time preparing for each meeting, which will mainly mean reading the papers that are sent out a week before each meeting. You will also need to have some induction and training, which can total around half a day. Will I get any induction and training? All our committee members will have an induction to their role. You will be briefed on your responsibilities and receive an induction pack which includes role responsibilities, information about LUU and information relevant to the work of the committee. You ll also meet with key members of the Senior Leadership Team before your first meeting. Do I get paid for being a committee member? Being a committee member is a voluntary role and you don t get paid for your time. You will however be reimbursed for any costs relating to meetings, such as travel expenses.

3 Can you give me some example of the issues that the Marketing and Development committee has been faced with in the past? Over the past year the committee members have advised on and discussed a number of issues which include: Approving the direction of LUU s Strategic Planning by receiving data from the members research. Advising on development of LUU s Digital Strategy. Developing LUU s External Partnerships This is alongside usual items of business which look at grants, funds and sponsorship, market research, marketing and communications and development activity. How will I benefit? This is a great opportunity to get involved with a fun, exciting and forward thinking charity. You will be working with a diverse group of committee members with a variety of skills and experiences and you may be faced with complex information and difficult decisions to make. Want to apply? 4 Marketing & Development Committee Member Role Description Main responsibility Marketing & Development committee members are responsible for overseeing LUU s marketing and communications strategies, for advising on marketing and development issues relating to the operating environment of LUU and advising on developments in fundraising. Key duties To work in partnership with other members of the committee, the Chief Executive and other senior staff to ensure that LUU has a clear Marketing and Communications strategy that meets the needs of the organisation and is focussed on achieving this. To approve the Union communications strategy. To agree the annual market research with members and stakeholders undertaken by LUU. To receive the results of the annual member satisfaction survey and agree any subsequent action to be taken. To oversee the cycle of strategic review processes including recommendations to the Board on stakeholder involvement. To make recommendations to the Board in respect of new opportunities for fundraising development. To receive reports concerning the changing operating environment which may impact LUUs strategic goals and agree any subsequent action to be taken. To oversee the content and direction for corporate communications including the Annual Impact Report (or similar) and website. To oversee compliance with current legislation relating to accessibility for LUUs communication.
