All about... how we use CCTV
The aim of CCTV is to: act as a deterrent to criminals assist our Community Safety Team and the police in detecting and investigating crime page 2 CCTV cameras and equipment are being used across the country to ensure that crime, theft, vandalism and antisocial behaviour are all substantially reduced. CCTV incident recordings can provide valuable evidence, improving the likelihood of a conviction. How is whg using CCTV? identify offenders and provide evidence improve the quality of life in our neighbourhoods encourage customers to report crime and antisocial behaviour. We have invested in the latest CCTV equipment which allows us to easily track and monitor activities in our neighbourhoods. We have CCTV systems in some of our blocks and intend to extend the service to our other high-rise blocks over the coming years. In our blocks with CCTV there is signage informing residents and visitors they are there and operational. We are able to position CCTV where it is visible or hidden from view, in hotspot areas or individual properties. We are able to fit our cameras to lampposts to view a wide area, and also offer individual packages, tailored to the individual s security needs, in the homes of victims and witnesses.
Who monitors the cameras? page 3 Our CCTV systems record 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Images are monitored in our CCTV Control Room. If our operative witnesses a crime or anti-social behaviour taking place, they will immediately contact the police or ProGuard, our security contractors, as applicable. We are also able to detect fly-tipping, graffiti, and other damage to property, which can be quickly remedied. CCTV images are currently stored for at least 14 days. Images are then automatically wiped from the system and new footage replaces it. It is important that you report any incidents to the police, and/or to whg, quickly to ensure any CCTV evidence can assist. CCTV equipment is maintained by whg.
How to report an incident page 4 If you witness any suspicious activity, or are a victim of crime yourself, you should report it to the police immediately, and then to the Community Safety Team. If it is a serious crime call 999, otherwise call West Midlands Police non-emergency number , or call in at your local police station. If you are aware there is a CCTV camera nearby, mention this to the police and they can request CCTV footage from us to assist them. FAQs For all other types of incidents, contact the Community Safety Team on A whg Housing Advisor will be allocated to you who will investigate your complaint and decide if it is appropriate to fit CCTV cameras to individual sites or properties. Frequently asked questions: Q: Do cameras record all the time? A: Yes, they record 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Q: How long are images kept for? A: Images are kept for an average of 14 days. That is why it is important that incidents are reported promptly before images are erased from the system. Q: Can anyone view the footage? A: No, only designated whg employees, authorised police officers, and persons carrying the correct authorisation, in accordance with the Data Protection Act, can view CCTV screens. However, if you are a witness you may be asked to review the footage.
page 5 Q: Do I have to give my name and address when I report an incident? A: No, but it is helpful if you do, as we then know it is a genuine complaint. Please be assured the information you give is always treated in the strictest confidence, and is not disclosed to anyone. Q: What should I do if there is ongoing antisocial behaviour in my neighbourhood? A: The first thing to do is to report it to our Community Safety Team on They will make investigations within the community, working with partner agencies (eg the police and Walsall Council) and will advise you on how the matter is to be dealt with. behaviour. However, if you live in an area experiencing anti-social behaviour, or feel intimidated or unsafe in your property, contact the Community Safety Team and we will discuss your concerns and options with you. We can offer many solutions and if appropriate, we may fit CCTV as short-term support whilst investigations are made and the issues resolved. Q: Are privacy laws taken into account? A: Yes, our CCTV surveillance is for the purpose of crime prevention, and public safety. At all times we adhere to relevant legislation, including the Data Protection Act, and RIPA (Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act). Q: How do I request CCTV in my neighbourhood, or in my home? A: We will be extending our CCTV coverage to all high-rise accommodation over the coming years, where it will assist with reducing crime and anti-social
