1 Roser Rumí CEIP Gaspar de Portolà RATIONALE Unit of work: ANIMALS SECOND CYCLE OF PRIMARY This CLIL project is aimed at the middle cycle of the Primary School, specifically the 4 th grade. It s a twelve hour project. This project contains six lessons which cover the subjects of Science and Art. The aim is for children to learn Science concepts through Science and Art activities. Art activities reinforce the Science concepts. Two hours per week are to be given over to the project- the distribution of the time depending on the individual school s timetable. Ideally sessions should be two hours long, with the first part of the lesson being given over to the science component. All lessons can be carried out in an ordinary classroom. The class should preferably have computers so that the children can use websites, Google and software. During Art activities (specially for modelling clay and painting) desks and clothes will need protection. The topics developed in the project are as follows: Science: Animals: habitat, grouping and food chains. Art: Art and visual education. Development of creativity: representing animals and drawing up fact-files. Practice of a range of art techniques: modelling, painting, drawing and making books. Some of the art activities can be used as assessment. Art activities will encourage children to think about what they have learnt through the lesson, and reinforce the science content. At the end of the project there is one art activity and one activity to teach special needs pupils.
