2 Westlake Girls High School Sport Sport plays an important part of a student s time at Westlake Girls High School. The opportunities are plentiful for those that choose to represent the school in the sporting arena. Established in 1962, Westlake Girls High School is one of New Zealand s leading sporting schools with a long-standing tradition and strong commitment to sporting excellence There are a number of different sports on offer ranging from Athletics to Yachting, for the committed athlete to the social or beginner. There is a sport that will meet an individual s needs. Participating in sport enables students to experience the special benefits that it offers, while building a strong school spirit with staff, students and the Westlake Community together. The aim is to foster an active participation, provide opportunities to develop personal and leadership skills, social interaction and a sense of fair play. The success of sport at Westlake Girls relies on volunteers working away in the background to promote individuals and teams. Each sport has a coordinator and relies on the support of staff, parents, caregivers and senior students for coaches and managers. Sport at Westlake Girls is user-pays. The Sports Department located in P9 provides information on all sporting activities and is open from 8am pm Monday Friday for queries. Kind regards Sports Department

5 Summer Sports Athletics, Basketball 3X3, Beach Volleyball, Cricket, Equestrian, Golf, Rowing, Swimming, Tennis, Touch, Triathlon, Volleyball, Water Polo & Yachting Winter Sports Badminton, Basketball, Cycling, Distance Running, Duathlon, Football, Gymsports, Hockey, Lacrosse, Netball, Squash, Table Tennis & Water Polo Athletics Athletics commences with the School Athletics day where the entire school attends. To compete for the school at the North Harbour Zones and North Harbour Championships students must place at the school athletics or be selected. Students can compete in numerous track & field events. School Athletics Day February Northern Zones (one day) March North Harbour Championships, one day event (selected) March North Island Championships, two day event (selected) April New Zealand Championships, two day event December Badminton Westlake Girls has a proud tradition in the sport of badminton with a high number of students competing for the school. Both seniors and juniors play as teams in the North Harbour competitions during terms 2 and 3. 7 Cricket Westlake Girls provides the opportunity for students to play cricket in the 1st XI and Junior Teams. Both teams compete during the week with games after school. There are numerous events for individuals that include riding as a team and individuals. Students compete in their respective age groups; juniors, intermediates and seniors and run both as individuals and teams. The 1st XI team also competes in the Auckland Intercity competition. All practices are held at the Westlake Girls Hockey Turf with games being played on Thursday and Fridays from 4pm onwards at Westlake Girls and North Harbour Hockey. The school has two Premier Netball teams, one competing in the Auckland competition and one in the North Harbour competition. Westlake consistently has over four hundred students playing from competitive to social on Saturday mornings for the Year students. The Year 9 teams play Tuesday afternoons at Netball North Harbour. Westlake students also have the opportunity to play in our internal social netball competition held onsite on the covered courts during Term 2. Novices (new rowers) have the opportunity to participate in a learn to row programme. Students learn the basics of the rowing stroke and at the completion are then able to apply for selection to the rowing squad. 11 Squash Squash is played in teams with competitions held at various Auckland locations with practices at North Shore Squash Club. Coaching is provided by Tennis Northern in the covered courts. 15 CYGNET Sports Programme Year 9 and 10 students can apply to join the WGHS CYGNET (Challenging Youth to Grow through Nurturing Emerging Talent) Sports Programme. An innovative collaboration between Sport, Physical Education and Health CYGNET is an innovative, crosscurricular programme aimed at developing sporting skills. Timetabled as a curriculum subject, CYGNET participants attend three periods in a six day timetable, growing confidence both interpersonally and in their sport of choice. Sports codes included in CYGNET, Football, Hockey, Netball, Rowing and Tennis. Sports theory covers fitness, strength conditioning, nutrition, sports science, skills training, sports coaching and core health.
